suyin is overwhelmingly ready to drown others in her hugs, but she's also quite perceptive and won't cross the line unless there's a benefit to it

i really wish more people would open their eyes to su being manipulative without this transforming her into a malicious devil to them... she lies to lin, and she isn't even slightly remorseful about it. she isn't ashamed ("i said what lin wanted to hear") either, and when confronted, she calls lin dramatic for being mad at the lie. when she's describing their past to korra, she's glosses over the actual impact of her actions, which is what leads to korra misinterpreting their sibling conflict as an unfounded grudge. she's aware of the effect she can have on people, she's more than willing to use and abuse her privileges, and she's extremely hypocritical. this is great. i love that in a woman.

speaking of the boundaries specifically, though, i can easily imagine suyin pushing her darling out of their comfort zone under the motivational guise of "exploring oneself" and "reaching one's greatest potential". the more the baseline gets extended, the simpler it is for her to get what she wants without any resistance, and isn't that handy? if you were uncomfortable holding hands in public when you met her, expect to learn how to love getting kissed while sitting in her lap during her meetings mere months later. she's steady, and she's subtle enough that the pressure she puts on you isn't crushing. it is, however, erosive. you cave in, bit-by-bit, until you find you have surrendered.

"You should get in the water for a bit."

His voice pulled her away from her thoughts. Looking up, she found him standing over her, droplets of seawater sliding lazily down his chest and disappearing beneath the waistband of his swim shorts. Lin's gaze lingered a fraction longer than she'd ever admit before she quietly thanked the spirits she'd remembered to wear sunglasses.

"I don't feel like washing the sunscreen off already," she replied lazily, folding one arm behind her head as she sank deeper into the lounger.

Tenzin sat down near her feet, unscrewing the cap of the water bottle he'd brought with him before taking a long drink.

"Then what's the point of coming to the beach if you refuse to swim?"

"I'm enjoying the view."

"The inside of your eyelids?"

"They're very relaxing."

After a comfortable silence settled between them, Tenzin smiled to himself. "I remember how Bumi used to splash water all over you every single time we went swimming."

Lin rolled her eyes, though a smile tugged stubbornly at the corner of her mouth. "You always got angrier than I did. Anyone would've thought he'd splashed you instead."

"Of course I did." He shrugged as though it was the most obvious thing in the world. "Someone had to protect your peace."

Lin snorted. "Turns out you're the one ruining it nowadays."

Before she could react, Tenzin leaned over and pinched the side of her calf.

Lin yelped. "Oh, you're dead."

She kicked him sharply in the ribs, making him grunt dramatically before bursting into laughter that only encouraged her to kick him again.

"Violence?" He gasped between laughs. "Really, Chief?"

"You started it."

"I absolutely did."
