pondering on this while i think about what characters the rejects would make. I do think they get a rule book and some paper to make character sheets after sufficiently begging bothering larry and bing about enrichment after torm brought it up
hi! i've talked about my opinions on drawing tom as a black character in a previous post a few months back, but i've recently gotten another wave of hateful comments concerning my tom again since i've posted my recent animation with him.
while comments disliking my art does not personally affect me, i find it much more upsetting that even after several years of artists within the fandom drawing tom as a POC, people have the audacity to blatantly disrespect and leave hateful/racist comments under artworks of him being drawn as any skin tone darker than a light beige.
for those who believe that drawing tom (character) is against tomska's wishes, here's a clip of him being openly supportive of the headcanon + referring to tom (eddsworld) as a separate character:

as i've said before, it's okay to prefer a lighter-skin/closer-to-canon tom. i don't take offense to people who simply ask "why is he black?" as long as they're asking in a respectful manner. i understand that in his canon design, tom is presumably white, along with the rest of the cast, so i get where the confusion comes from. in terms of the "blackwashing" argument, that is a topic that i'll leave to your own judgement. if you disagree with interpreting tom as a POC, then your opinion is up to you.
however, what's NOT okay is being openly racist or hateful. i've gotten hundreds of comments referring to my tom design as a "thing", calling him slurs/derogatory terms, stating how ugly he looks, and so on. i've even received a handful of insults and racist accusations towards myself as well simply for drawing him as a black character.
i also find it odd how there's a certain "limit" to how far you can go with darkening tom's skin. i've seen tom drawn with tan/brown skin, and while these designs aren't completely excluded from forms of hate, the feedback is often much less negative compared to other designs where he is depicted with darker skin.
if you truly believe that drawing tom as a POC is wrong, then why let certain skin tones fly under your radar? and in my case, as someone who has several other designs of the eddsworld characters being depicted as POC (such as my design of edd or patryck, who i've both drawn with brown skin for example), why does hardly anyone ever comment or have an issue with their race? if whether a fictional character is drawn as white or not such an issue to you, then do you not have a problem with a character depicted with a different race as long as they're white-passing or light enough? or do you just have a problem with black characters?
not everyone is going to like the fact that there are artists who depict tom as black, and that's fine. but that doesn't justify the amount of racism i've seen in not only my own comment section, but also under many other artists' artworks on various platforms. i try my best to ignore the majority of the negative comments i receive, but it's tiring to see how blatantly disrespectful people are online. i've dealt with this for ~2 years since i've rejoined the eddsworld fandom, and i'm sure many other artists can relate to this issue as well.
to be clear, i don't care if you don't like the way i draw tom. you don't have to like the way i draw him, and you don't have to agree with every single point i made in this post. but understand that the disrespectful comments that you leave online regarding his race reflect on your values.
shared fantasy of the rejects to beat bing to death with hammers but also i imagine he's thought of that and had the foresight to hardwire the instinct to not hurt him into all the clones like the robots in futurerama with mom. so they just aggressively ragebait him.
I just think that matt wants the attention and respect of his peers and matt prime to that respect is very attracted to tom's because of it's unattainability (e.g., Space Face). and I think this is a trait that is inherent in most cloned matts, if it goes ignored for too long he fills that hole with something else, like becoming the zombeh leader or hunting his friends for blood sport
so ratt (realistic matt) having a platonic tom harem is a nice silver lining that is also single-handedly stopping him from becoming the joker.
well... at least film buff tom doesn't mind him one bit!

yes yes yes!!! you get the core of why i think these two are drawn the most to each other (and also a bit of ratt angst i think about... for another post maybe down the line! I like your angle though.)
My own thoughts about their dynamic, yes the remind each other of their own friendship but I also think it only works because they are also different from their prime counterparts. I've talked a bit about how they differ already, but also ratt is still very similar to classic matt circa Spares, just looks weird. Thomas on the other hand, beyond fashion, does look very similar to Tom prime but is almost nothing like him in mannerisms and taste.
In the same ways I kind of see ratt and scribble having a kind of antagonistic relationship in the ways matt and tom prime antagonize each other (scribble having filled the edd-shapped power vacuum by necessity, and even though i think ratt doesn't want to usurp that, he does very much crave validity and be listened to that scribble, having tom prime's aversion to vulnerability, has a hard time fulfilling. and to that end, he has just ignored scribble in favor of doing whatever he wants at times). thomas having none of the strong feelings but all of the understanding that tom prime would have of the circumstances they have found themselves in, would probably very naturally empathize with what ratt is going though. and, well, 00's casual toxicity aside, main gang probably would not go to the movies together if they wernt on some level, friends under all that.

the thing about film buff tom is that unfortunately i must curse him with what existential film esoterica ive watched recently with my cinephile friend, and then have to decide whether or not I want to make a very meta comic about that would probably be too abstract and high concept than for what its worth or for how I characterize fbt
fbt is fighting me off with a stick to stop me from making him an Aesop
actually i can just make fbt be friends with bing against bing's will, and make him give unwarranted film rants because he literally knows no one else who would be able keep up in any respect with him. and that is being generous because bing one, does not want to be friends and the fact he keeps on getting out is a security risk; and two, bing is not nearly the cinephile that fbt is and fbt knows this, part of this is revenge.
