Crazy Stuff the Government Did #1: Schrooms?

During the early years of Project MK-ULTRA (highly scandalous government research program that dealt with hard drugs, torture, and illegal experimentation on U.S. citizens) a large portion of the research conducted was focused solely on discovering a truth serum that could be used on soviet spies during the Cold War. Another subject of interest was the enhancement of psychic abilities in military personnel. So, when the leaders of project MK-ULTRA discovered a substance that could possibly work as both a truth serum, and an enhancer and psychic abilities, they were in!

 During this crusade of Project MK-ULTRA’s, a civilian scientist named Dr. Andrija Puharich was hired to help study the potential truth serum/psychic enhancer; a mushroom native to Mexico known as God’s Flesh. At this time, not much was known about the effects of mushrooms as a psychedelic drug. After some *intense* studies of how the mushroom affects the mind after consumption, it was well established that this could not be relied on as a truth serum. It was also tested *extensively* on psychics at Dr. Puharich’s lab. But the schrooms didn’t seem to enhance psychic abilities. In fact, Dr. Puharich’s most skilled psychic tried it and seemingly lost his psychic abilities as a result. So during the 60s (*cough cough*) Dr. Puharich made the executive decision that it would be a great idea to throw schroom parties at his lab. Members of the highest intellectual echelon in Cali gathered at his place to do massive amounts of very high quality schroom provided in part by the government. One time Dr. Puharich’s wife walked in on one of these gathering and described the scene as grotesque. A middle aged couple was having animalistic sex on a table in the middle of the room, the woman drooling with her eyes rolling about as her saggy boobs flopped up and down. A man sat in the corner repeatedly banging his head against the wall. A few people ran drunkenly about the room, and most others were passed out cold. The CIA quickly realized Dr. Puharich may not be a great person to be affiliated with to say the least. But far worse activities were being done around the same time....

Hey, this is EnchantressofNumber here, just wanted to say that if you enjoy hearing about crazy stuff the government did in the 60s I’m a total expert on it more or less and I could write at least 20 more stories about it. Soooo, I’m thinking this should be a series! This one is kind of an introduction to this subject but if you guys have any questions or are interested in a particular subject comment and I might write something about it. :0

     This is a portrait of a very special lady by the name of Ada Lovelace who lived during the Victorian Era in England. Not only is Ada the namesake of my blog, she is also my idol and she inspires me everyday.

    Ada Lovelace was a mathematician known for her work on the Analytical Engine alongside Charles Babbage, and holds the title of first computer programmer ever! 

    Ada was the daughter of the famous poet Lord Byron, and was raised by her mother away from his influence. Her mother believed that exposing any creative subjects to Ada would bring out her father’s alleged insanity, and wouldn’t allow any artistic subjects near her. She raised her on math and science solely. What’s really interesting about Ada is that her mother thought that by confining Ada’s education to math and sciences she could keep Ada from becoming a big artistic mess like her father. No matter how Ada’s mother tried to keep her down to earth, Ada was imaginative, creative and never stopped asking questions no one could answer. Ada would ask her math professor about negative numbers and the concept of infinity. She wrote a paper about how computers could be used to create music and to send messages. Not even Babbage ever thought the Analytical Engine could be used for anything beyond calculations. 

    In addition to all the truly beautiful theoretical concepts Ada devised, she defied all societal standards of women, and tabloids of the time didn’t know what the make of her! Ada and Babbage’s story is really amazing and I highly encourage one to read Ada’s biography or to read “The Thrilling Adventures of Lovelace and Babbage” by Sydney Padua. I can’t stress enough how cool Ada was and how interesting and inspirational her story is.

    Babbage and Lovelace often sent letters to one another and in the letters that were saved, Babbage referred to Ada as his ‘enchantress of number’. I absolutely fell in love with that nickname and named this blog after it because it perfectly embodies everything I love about the two. It just shows what a special bond they had and it shows how Ada used her creativity to contribute to the scientific community. Like an enchantress she pulled brilliant mathematical ideas out of what seemed like thin air.

10 Things About Me

I don’t really want this blog to be centered around me but I figure y’all might be curious who the heck is running this thing. (Also I kinda stole this idea from my friend who just started a blog too, so shoutout to @wordsoflizdomblogs)

1. My name is Emily and I am 16 years old. I have brown hair and green eyes. I live in a really weird small town with a lot of abandoned buildings.

2. I’m very passionate about many things and have a million projects constantly. I like to draw, write, read science stuff, try to do tech stuff and fail, snowboard, explore places, look at fashion stuff on Pinterest, watch anime, and start projects without finishing them.

3. I’m a really bad procrastinator. :P

4. I’m involved in my school Rifle team and orchestra and I also take piano lessons. I ca pretty much figure out any song on either piano or violin by ear, so I guess that’s a cool talent. 

5. Shady government projects are cool!

6. I like listening to a lot of rock music but I also like classical, and a lot of weird decade stuff like funky 70s music, 50s doo-wop stuff, and 80s new wave. Favorite genre is riot grrrl. My favorite bands include The Clash, Talking Heads, Nirvana, Daddy Issues, Sex Pistols, MCR, Weezer and Queen.

7. Love Studio Ghibli, and Hetalia is my favorite anime of all time. Currently watching Neon Genesis Evangelion and like it a lot.

8. I used to code in python all the time but kind of stopped when I got frustrated with a bug in a video game I was developing and haven’t really programmed since... IF YOU KNOW PYTHON HIT ME UP.

9. I love Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Monty Python, Doctor Who, Star Trek, and any Jackie Chan movie. I also watch a lot of Urban Exploring videos on Youtube.

10. I’m that one kid in the corner of class staring out the window, eyes glazed over. I’m always in lala land so to speak. I feel like I’m the ‘quirky one’ if we’re going by high school stereotypes; but I don’t really know what people think of me and I don’t really care XD.

Introduction to this Blog

This blog is about the things we don’t entirely understand and the things we think we understand but don’t.
