You know, I really love Guinan and think she’s an irreplaceable character, but I kind of feel like her presence in TNG sometimes makes Deanna Troi a little redundant. Because very often Guinan’s role in the show is to council the other characters and help them through emotional struggles, which is also Troi’s job. And the writers seem to give Guinan the majority of the deep philosophical lines that actually effect the other characters’ thinking, so by comparison at times it kind of makes it appear like Deanna isn’t quite as good at her own job as Guinan is. Which is a shame. I wish there had been more of a clear separation between the roles of Troi and Guinan, because both are valuable characters. Troi is an educated psychologist as well as a high ranking officer, while Guinan is an ancient member of a distant species who has traveled across the galaxy for centuries. These two very different backgrounds for the characters make them pretty different from each other, so it’s a bit of a shame that they are both put into the role of ship’s councilor
