Skellefteå churchtown has a very distinct layout and architecture. The church and surrounding cabins play an important role in the community’s life here.

Amazing, pristine interiors at the churchtown of Gammelstadviken, Sweden. Churchtowns are unique to Northern Sweden, where a royal edict made churchgoing mandatory in the 17th century. To be better equipped for the hassle involved with leaving the homesteads in the far coners of the parish, locals erected cabins near their church. This is where they kept their Sunday finest, bottles of spirits, the best coffee and tea, and came to spend the weekend, treating their neighbors to fika and gossip. Thus, churchtowns became the social glue in these faraway districts of Sweden, a tradition well-preserved to this day.
Gammelstad also boasts a large collection buildings displaying unique historic architectural styles from the 18th-19th century.
