What is Dust to Dusk?
Dust to Dusk is a long-term character-driven roleplay set in the RWBY universe. Its premise revolves around the repercussions of the people’s discontent of the growing problems of Vale: outbreaks of Grimm, rampant crime, strange disappearances, Dust shortages, and violent protests.
The purpose of the blog is to serve the roleplayer by providing the services of a game master / storyteller. If you want to battle against Grimm, this blog will “provide” the enemies. If you want to uncover a nasty plot against the city, this blog will do as such.
All you have to do is ask.

*you gain a plate of muffins* "Thought i'd say hello! I'm Chroma with Team BACC" -Chroma
The blonde stared at the plate with a neutral expression before looking up at the girl who introduced herself as Chroma. “Hello Chroma. My name is Alice, and I am currently independent until further notice.”
"Would you be part of Beacon’s rumored cooking club?"
Cinereal watched the muffin fall. Of the four there, Cap and Joi knew that feeling best, the feeling you get from fighting and remembering. Cap remembered the feeling from watching burning forests and buildings and the run to stop it, Joi knew the smell of cigarettes and oil before the smell of iron and gunpowder before the smell of chemical fumes. Cinereal knew it too though, and knew the feeling from walking through cold red snow.
"Five dozen attacked the militia at Hope. Myself and… And someone else stopped them, leaving less than a dozen." Cinereal said
Joi noticed how Cinereal approached Alice, up front, as honest as she could be without implicating anyone but herself. And that broke the wall; the two of them were not as different as one would think. “The highest rank captured from the field was a Major. However, the hierarchy of that organization goes higher,” Joi said, “but no one has been able to find their new shop.”
Cinereal calmly knelt down and picked up the muffin to inspect it. She then set it on a counter and got the girl a new one before asking, “We have some shared experience… Lyco?”
"You and this other person…and five dozen of those men." Alice remarked, her gaze momentarily flickering at the others. Her omission of the town guard spoke volumes on her thoughts on their effectiveness. "I am amazed that there is a town left," she deadpanned.
The tension in Alice’s shoulders present when she walked into the classroom loosened considerably, its presence before invisible against the stillness that she projected with her very posture. Without it, shadows of awkwardness and exhaustion could be seen - socializing among other things took a lot out of her. For her to unwittingly reveal that, especially amid a group, spoke a lot about her company.
"You’ll be going after them when the time comes." Alice replied to Joi before looking over at the four members of the cooking club. "You don’t seem the type to let things end there."
Nodding her agreement and thanks to Cinereal and accepting the new muffin with her now-steady hands, Alice shut her eyes and tilted her head as if contemplating Cinereal’s question. Her breathing slowed as she forced herself to keep calm. “Lyco…”
Was her best friend. Her wielder. Her other half. Her world.
"…was Master Hizawa’s apprentice - his successor in all things. She shared the Master’s ability to hastily heal wounds on others but not on themselves. She was not like Master Hizawa in heart though - she was prone to mischief and…"
She rubbed the right side of her abdomen absentmindedly.
"…tended to take things too far.”
She paused to take a small bite of the muffin, forcing herself to reign in her thoughts and feelings, and only continued after she had chewed and swallowed.
"She isn’t relevant anymore."
Liar.
"The Scourge," Cinereal stated, "one could say that we were an army created by scientists."
"Twisted scientists, doctors, and engineers that the military cut loose long ago because of the kinds of experiments they were willing to preform," Cap said, "they set up shop far away from the kingdoms with like-minded officers and soldiers-"
"They steal children," Cinereal uncharacteristically interrupted, "they preformed experiments, trained them to obey. They did this until there were not enough humans and Grimm at their disposal and recently had us go out and capture entire towns. We were to raze anywhere we fought afterwards, kill any who opposed us… We had been indoctrinated to believe we a part of a great cause for our leaders and would live in a future they devised."
Cinereal paused, looked at Joi, and sighed as she looked back at Alice, “But it was apparent that we were only tools and tests when they began to order their forces barricade and burn homes. Soon after, they abandoned their loyal pawns at the town of Hope; that is where I helped destroy them.”
"… What about you?"
This Scourge was its own brand of evil. At least with cultists, it was like putting down mad dogs. Sure they were intelligent and ferocious… but they lacked the discipline and methodicalness that this other group had.
Kidnapping. Experimenting. Brainwashing. This wasn’t madness. Every action was made with clear intelligence and decision. And it made everything all the more horrible.
Passive indifference may have been etched onto her face, but the tension locking up her muscles couldn’t be feigned - that pale ember of a previous life that screamed Help! and Protect! She closed her eyes with deliberateness, thin creases on the bridge of her nose.
She only opened her eyes again when Cinereal concluded, the fire in her eyes cooling at the mention of tools. Alice was fairly sure that the other girl was using the term in the worst way possible, but it didn’t stop the word from relaxing her.
In the end, it was what she was - a tool - a blade searching for a new wielder.
And that fact brought her much comfort despite the severity of the subjects at hand.
Once Cinereal finished, Alice asked curtly, “Did you get them all?”
—
Upon Cinereal’s inquiry of her own history, Alice’s first instinct was to lie. Habit mostly - she never liked people prying into her past, and her nature would not allow her to reminisce. But lying wouldn’t be right - to be faced with such blatant honesty and return it so abysmally. That didn’t settle well in her heart.
And so she spoke.
"I was…saved by my mentor and his apprentice when I was young - from cultists, men and women who wore the masks of Grimm and believed that taking the lives of human and Grimm alike would bring them power." she frowned, settling down onto a nearby seat and placing the half-emptied plate of muffins on the counter.
"They were…effective in their teachings, using necessity and consequence as driving motivators," she stared unfocused at the far wall. "The first few years were unpleasant. But I learned the Principles of fighting from them. Before, I thought we were fighting for justice when Master Hizawa had told us to test the effectiveness of what we learned on the cultists we found."
Alice played around with the half-eaten muffin, switching it from hand to hand. The tone of her voice switched from telling a story to contemplative - thoughtful.
"Master Hizawa did not believe in justice; he believed in practicality. The cultists were merely the most convenient target as I had no compunctions on killing them. I think I had objected the first time he suggested his plans…but in the end, I believed that there was no action too horrible for them.”
Upon remembering the sea of red that enveloped that time of her life, Alice tapped her fingers against the muffin, failing to notice that her right hand had started twitching and shaking of its own accord.
"My knowledge of the body came from these ‘people’. I learned how every organ worked and what happened when they failed. I learned what happened when you severed this nerve or that artery." Her voice unchanging from its monotone, the shakes in her hands became violent, crumbs of muffin flicking to the ground from the tension in her fingers.
"I learned what blows unarmed and bladed would be the most lethal. And learned which blows would inflict the most agony." Blue eyes closed quietly, her face still emotionless as she remembered the yells and the red.
"Only later did I supplement that knowledge with magic and Dust…"
"And with Lyco’s skill at healing, they would only die when we wan-."
The faint sound of something soft falling forced her eyes open. Staring at the fallen muffin and its crumbled pieces on the floor, Alice shifted her curious gaze from the food to her now shaking hands, the tremors getting less and less violent as time passed.
"I apologize. I am not normally this clumsy."

Get stronger? I'll show that bastard.... A circle was set upon the ground along with a twenty-two point star. All drawn with blood, the runes that composed the lines glowed faintly in the darkness. Sitting in the middle was a young blonde girl, her finger on an open page. "Tarnished by the taint of lust, Stunted by the mud of sloth, Ensnared by the chains of envy, Blinded by the haze of anger... Corrupted by the grip of pride, Entranced by the glitter of greed. Slowed by the weight of gluttony. I look to myself for the answer. Choice becomes decision when the will shows the way. Crucible, reveal my choice. Magic, light my way."

Cinereal remained quiet for a moment before walking over to her equipment bag and took out a very particular black cloak and her bastard sword. “This will answer your question,” she said.
Her sword was nearly her own height, weighing even more than its size would suggest. Its hilt and guard were actually made of a machine pistol, however it was obvious how much it was not used compared to the blade. “I can not say that i have seen you, but you have described the group i had belonged to… I… was with them until i found we had not merely been taking the people from their homes. I was stupid and blind.” She said carefully with a calm and stony expression, “it is interesting that you had seen us and lived, though, I did myself.”
Joi looked at her teammates, slightly surprised that she would mention this, but it was her choice to.
As soon as Cinereal pulled the sword out, Alice knew what she was; her focus sharpened so readily at the offending object that it was like watching a lake instantly freeze to ice.
She charged in with the sound of profanity behind her. One heartbeat was all it took to cross the distance - to skewer the black-cloaked oddity setting the home ablaze.
The next moment she found herself slammed into the ground, a plume of maroon from her upper torso dyeing the ground red.
In her darkening vision was the black-cloaked one, sword coated with her blood.
And just as quickly as the focus came, it was gone, replaced by the calm gaze forever decorating the girl’s eyes. The blonde observed the intricacies of the sword with a practiced eye, moving from the length of the blade to the hilt and guard making up the gun portion of the weapon: that blade was a hybrid weapon similar and yet extremely different to those favored in Beacon.
She met Cinereal’s eyes as soon as the other girl finished speaking about her history with those men. “You were," she replied matter-of-factly without heat or humor.
"I had help," the blonde replied succinctly as Cinereal added that last titbit there. Then she cocked her head, focus entirely on Cinereal. "Who were those men?"

Dear Lycoris,
Today has mostly followed the format of most days: wake up, brush teeth, train, attend classes, eat lunch, attend classes, and train. That last part however was when things became… different.
I met another student named Alistair in the Emerald Forest. He had been attacked by an Ursa and seemed to be in poor condition when I heard the sounds of battle. Though he looked poor off, I… doubt he would’ve died if I decided not to interfere. He still had options available to him that were not immediately noticeable to me.
And yes I interfered of my own accord. You shouldn’t look too much into it, Lyco, for I don’t particularly understand myself. I would’ve been perfectly in my rights to simply leave him be and let nature take its course. But I suppose I still have that tiny part of me that still believe in heroes and justice.
It’s amazing how some things absolutely refuse to drown in Water’s nature, even when they’ve been disproven time and time again.
But in the end, I distracted the creature long enough for him to cast something that looked like Enchantment and Illusion. Something to make the Grimm see its worst fears. He didn’t express the curiosity I expected of him when I obliquely offered my services as a test subject for his illusions much like you at one time, Lyco, with your enchantments.
I wonder sometimes what I would see if caught by such a power. You should know already that I don’t fear anymore. If asked to take that step for a chance of victory, I would take it a hundred out of a hundred times.
But this letter isn’t about that, though if you wanted it to be, it would. Instead, Alistair is polite in the sense of nobility polite; I imagine you would enjoy pretending to be a noblewoman in his presence, Lyco. His sense of direction is just as poor as yours too but refuses aids to assist him in that.
I cannot blame him. Technology tends to be a crutch at the best of times and a deficiency at worst.
Anyway, the semblance he wields is odd if that blade of his - Cheshire Smile - is a focus for that semblance. I have never seen a semblance that could cast internal illusions before. I’ve seen external illusions like what you do with your afterimages while channeling Wind - but internal, trapping them in their own minds.
It sounds like a domain that only gods dare to trespass in.
I do not fear Alistair, but my senses are uneasy around him. The Water tells me that he is not all there as though his presence is like a drizzle falling from clouds of storm.
But I cannot divine it further.
My candle is burning out, so I shall keep the rest brief. We had managed to make it out of the forest without being accosted. The happy sort of ending that you seem to cherish and adore.
Always yours,
Alice
