“A cat person ??” And, naturally, this was what Jupiter claimed to be. It wasn’t that she disliked dogs because there was nothing she had against them, but saying that she would’ve been ecstatic to walk into a room full of baby kittens rather than dogs isn’t the furthest thing from the truth. But the smile she wore as she watched Dimi with the dogs was very real – why wouldn’t it be ?? It was all a very cute scene straight out of a rom-com, so much so she was half expecting one to pee on him or something of the sorts. “I find that a lot of good books start out slow, but some people never give ‘em a chance because they get too bored after the first few chapters – m’glad that I stuck around.” Jupiter’s eyes followed Dimi’s gestures as he pointed out the name of each dog, her natural instinct telling her to introduce herself once he finished started kicking in. “Nice to meet you all, I’m Jupiter,” The girl knelt down a bit and extended out of her comfort zone for the sake of a lick on the back of her hand and half-hearted belly rub soon after he beckoned the bunch forward. She sat the books she came to return on the nearest coffee table in hopes that none of the pups would decided to have their way with them while she showed them some love.

“C’mon now, Jupiter — Let’s not enlist ourselves ‘n that pointless ‘en all-consuming war that is the dog people vs. cat people war, eh? Society might be set on drawin’ a line down between the two preferences; but it don’t mean we need to conform to that, right? I mean, just look at y’self, hm? Jupiter the cat person — makin’ friends with, ‘en playin’ with the pups.” The male grinned warmly; that very grin of which only seemed to grow wider as the latter introduced herself to the litter of excitable pups. The talk of books seemed somewhat less immediate in the face of all four pups, now descending upon the girl who was knelt down on the floor to greet them — and as if propelled forward by the laugh that shook his chest, Dimi hastened forward to join the happy congregation. “Hey -— Hey, Mercutio!! Stop that, will ya’ buddy? Y’know it’s not polite to nibble on guests fingers — You’re teething now, bud. It hurts, hey?” And as if the pup could understand Dimi’s words, he stopped at once; going in for an apologetic lick to the back of Jupiter’s knuckles in repentance. The next few minutes passed in much the same way; and the lounge room — despite visually resembling something of a wasteland, exuded a warmth and cheer of inexplicable heights. “

middle & index finger parting as they neared the cigarette, kaleb allowed his digits to pull the ADDICTIVE stick from the grasp of his canines — a cloud of smoke now seeping from the gap between his brims. it didn’t take a genius to DEDUCE the sedative presence of the other — the male practically radiating a sadness that gnawed at his gut. ❝ you should calm down a bit, endymion. ❞ — ❝ your happiness is beginning to SMOTHER me. ❞ he teased, thumb flicking across the filter, sending the building ash of his cigarette tumbling to the ground.

A ghost of a smile hinted along the curve of Endymion’s lips upon hearing the latter’s remark; -— a brief reprieve from the consuming sorrow that crippled his heart. “ ‘m sorry for that, mate. ‘ ts not my intention to be smotherin’ you with anythin’ -but sad hours are long hours, and you’ve intruded within their midst. ” a long drag; silence; brown hues pooling their gaze upon the latter. “ ... a drink, on me. ”

“Well I see that, now.” She glanced over again, the little monsters making a mess out of his furniture. “Temporary you said? Until when? They get adopted?”

“Yeah, ‘til we make sure we’ve found a good home for them, and they get adopted.” Dimi affirmed; exuding warmth — none too bothered by the chaos that was unfolding behind him; instigated by his fluffy friends. “Though I’m thinking of adopting one m’self, really -— How about you, eh? Y’ wouldn’t happen to be interested in adopting a fluffy bundle of joy now, would you?”

seeing this male just coated in the paw prints of tiny little puppies made all the anger that kitty had been storing in her small frame melt away. the redhead shifted a bit, trying not to smile too hard and — “why is it only temporary??”

“ -—Ah, well; it’s ‘cause ‘m just takin’ care of them while we find them a good home and a loving human counterpart. I volunteer at Oahu SPCA ‘en all, so -—” But alas!! Dimi’s explanation was cut short by a timely pawing at his feet, a laugh escaping him as he averted his gaze below to find Romeo craving his attention. Without missing a beat, he scooped the pup into his arms — then turning his attention back to the female; smile warm as ever as he continued, “ -— so I get the honour of gettin’ my house wrecked by this little guys for a while. Better my house gets wrecked by pups than bandits though, eh?”

amethyst leaned against the door frame, as she honestly felt too tired to stand properly. regardless of that, she suddenly felt something claw against her leg. it was one of the curious, adorable puppies; it only caused her to smiled wider. picking one up, amethyst suddenly didn’t feel so irritated by her lack of sleep, “well, i wouldn’t dare want to be known as a puppy hater,” she responded, “who needs sleep when you have puppies to play with? certainly, i use to play with it all the time as a kid. i’ve been wanting to get another dog with my brother but – guess they sort of just remind me of my mom too much, she use to love dogs immensely.”

“Right? That’s my life motto really; sleep isn’t necessary for my health ‘en wellbeing — Only puppies are. ‘En I’ve got a generous dose of puppies here with me indeed, eh?” Endymion chuckled softly; though despite his playful antics and warm demeanour, he was quick to notice as the latter leant herself against his doorframe — his gaze discerning the fatigue behind the girl’s nonetheless cheery demeanour. Endymion wasn’t sorry that these four pups had found themselves placed in his care at the expense of his furniture, but he was sorry that he and his furry friends had stolen what seemed to be much needed sleep from his neighbour. This apologetic train of thought was curbed, however, upon the mention of the latter’s mother — and naturally, Endymion’s mind strayed to dwell upon thoughts of his own. “My mum was always more of a cat person — But really, she loved all animals when it really came down to it.” He responded with a fond yet distant smile; though his trip down memory lane was interrupted by the sound of glass shattering from what seemed to be the kitchen. “Oh shite, I -— uh, need to go see what’s happened. Y’can come in ‘en make yourself comfortable, or somethin’? I’ll make y’ a tea or somethin’ in a bit as apology for all this noise!!” He had already vanished from the doorway and into the kitchen as he spoke — the shattering of glass having him fearing the worst.

“That’s really nice of you, m’sure they-” Jupiter gestured to the puppies behind him with a nod, “- really appreciate it.” The girl rocked back and forth on the balls of her feet while she waited for him to invite her in, finding that most people didn’t like it when she walked in without their consent. “If you say so.” She flashed him a quick smile before carefully entering the room with her eyes glued to the floor beneath her, trying to insure that the next step she took wouldn’t be on the tail or foot of one of his furry friends. “They were good, the uh-…the, this one,” she started while she raised a book from the bottom of her stack, “- was a little slow in the beginning, but s’really nice overall.” While she spoke, one of the puppies made a habit of circling between her legs and trying to jump up them, to which she quietly shooed it away and managed to choke out a chuckle. “Do they have names ??”

“‘S’ nothin’, really — I reckon’ rather than me being ‘nice’, a more accurate word would be ‘lucky’. I mean, when it really comes down to it, who doesn’t want to be surrounded by four cute little golden retrievers, right? They’re doin’ me a happiness, not the other way ‘round,” Dimi dismissed warmly with a modest shrug, a quiet laugh escaping him as the largest of the litter padded along and began jumping — with brilliant aim — for his knees. Without a moment’s hesitation the brunet leant down to scoop the pup up into his arms, placing a peck atop it’s head of golden fur. “ -— Right, buddy? You’re doin’ me a favour of happiness — Little champ.” His voiced was laced with no deficit of affection as he doted over the tiny pup, then turning his attention to Jupiter with a smile that simply could not have grown any wider. “Ohhhh -— Right? Endure through the slow beginning and that one’s a right treat. ‘S’ actually my favourite of all the ones there, really. ‘M glad you enjoyed it, love.” Setting the pup down, Dimi then folded his arms over his torso — giving a quick nod in response to the latter’s question. “Ohp, yeah — they do alright. That one by the window; lookin’ pensive and emotional is Romeo — The one I just had with me is Mercutio. That one over there tryin’ to become your new best friend is Doug, and the one havin’ his way with the upholstery’s Benedick.” He grinned warmly, gesturing at each of the dogs as he introduced them. “C’mon guys, where’re your manners, eh? We’ve got a guest here!!” He announced; words playfully directed towards the puppies.

as the proximity between the two was quick to diminish, pools of ICE averted down towards the sudden heat — the stranger’s digit flicking across the flint wheel of the lighter , a small flame sparking to LIFE. within mere seconds, an addictive form of toxins seeped through the cigarette filter — racing down his trachea. it wasn’t often he enjoyed the bliss of the smoke, yet, every now & then after a long day at the gym, it was a SOUGHT after sensation he didn’t dare deprive himself of. ❝ appreciate it. ❞ he hummed out, the words spilling from his tongue as he exhaled. ❝ you’ve got a name, stranger ?? ❞

A vague nod was Endymion’s sole response to the blond’s utterance of thanks , nimble fingertips making quick work of casting the lighter back into his pocket before his digits found the smoke once more; ash at the tip of the cigarette waning to the cement below. The stranger’s request for a light had intruded upon a rare moment of poignancy — and despite his best efforts, the brunet was unable to mask his saddened heart in this moment.

“ Endymion -— ” Voice thick and honeyed; this was the only reply the male could muster.

tonight was one of the few nights were amethyst could actually catch some sleep, so she did plan to take advantage of every second. unfortunately for her, it seems like she wasn’t the only still awake at this hour. normally, due to her long shifts at the hospital, amethyst has grown accustomed to being a night owl. but she wasn’t exactly invincible either – the girl surely was overdue for a beauty rest. the noises became more tedious by the second, causing amethyst to roll around her bed before eventually standing up to find out what it is. knocking onto her neighbor’s door, once it opened amethyst was suddenly surprise to four small puppies scattering at all directions. she wasn’t sure how to respond, so she simply smiled, “oh, um, it’s alright i guess. i can’t exactly get mad over puppies, i’ll just end up seeming like a bitch,” she chuckled, “it is what it is, dogs are cool. my mom use to have a baby pug back when i was a kid. we eventually had to give it away to a new family, though.”

“And they’re orphan puppies too; so to get mad over them would be deemed doubly socially unacceptable, really.” Endymion quipped back; his words playful, his tone of voice polite yet somewhat jovial — his sorrow over the late mother to the pups being well masked as he continued on with a small little smile. “A pug, hm? Cute little fella’s, they are.”

“ Yeah, here y’are, mate. ” Cancerous stick now dangling between his lips — Endymion fished his lighter out from the back pocket of his jeans; inching closer a moment to extend the light to the end of the latter’s cigarette -— his left hand shielding the flame from the summer breeze which worked to extinguish it.

The boys eyebrows pulled together, trying not to laugh when the boy said ‘pups for everyone’ because–well it just sounded odd. “Thanks, pal” he said softly, taking the few steps forward before dropping gently to his knees and letting the tiny fluffy animals rush towards him. Atticus picked up the nearest one, kissing it’s cold snout, before peering up at the other boy. “Mhm. Scout. Did I say that? Um, yeah. Oh, it’s Nashville. So I’m kinda far” he said, shifting slightly to cross his legs and sit on his bum. His fingers carded through the pups fur, “how come you have lots up puppies in your room?” he asked, his eyes fixed on the puppy he was petting.

A warm chuckle lilted from Endymion’s smiling lips at the sight of the rush of puppies that had now overcome his guest; Dimi himself soon crouched beside the male and swarmed by the affectionate hoard of fluffy companions. “Scout? Like from To Kill a Mockingbird?” He pried briefly with a smile; settling himself down opposite the male — facing him with the four pups roaming the small distance between them. “Ah — well —” Dimi began; nimble fingers gently tickling under the chin of one of the puppies that was now situated upon his lap. “I volunteer with Oahu SPCA — ‘Get to take care of these little ones while we’re looking for good homes to place them in.”
