Darklina being soulmates who actually intensely loathe each other while being stupidly drawn to each other is kinda funny.

"It's good that Alina lost her power because she was losing herself and becoming cruel and greedy!"
I wonder what exactly she was losing. Her kindness? Her empathy? Her principles? Her sanity? Her generosity? Her love for humanity and determination to make the world a better place? The sight of her true purpose?
In the beginning, we see a rude, ill-tempered, ignorant, prejudiced, cranky girl who chokes on envy when a prettier girl catches Mal's attention, aggressively reacts to anyone whose behavior doesn't please her, seems to have no interests, no talents, and no skills, and stands for nothing, believes in nothing, and aspires to nothing. She cares nothing for other people's struggles, shows no inkling of empathy for anyone, and obsesses with how other people perceive her.
Power couldn't make her lose anything because she didn't have anything worth preserving to begin with—only bitterness, selfishness, sullenness, and self-pity. Ironically, suppressing her power was exactly what was making her fade away slowly.
Amplifiers didn't fundamentally change anything in her: they, as the name suggests, amplified what was already there: her self-absorption, her bigotry, her hypocrisy, her callousness, her cowardice, her thoughtlessness. They didn't break anything in her; they only provided an opportunity for her nasty nature to cause more harm: from a permanent scowl and mean-spirited comments, she went to outright violence and destruction.
Stripping her of her power solved absolutely nothing. If a person in psychosis grabs a knife, taking it away doesn't cure their illness and doesn't help with it in any way. They are as sick as ever, just temporarily unarmed.
Alina started despicable and ended despicable, and the only thing her journey did was convince her that nothing was her fault: she was manipulated, she was seduced, she was exploited, she was corrupted, and the world was just so unfair to her. She understood nothing, learned nothing, helped no one, grew not at all, and only became more delusional and less self-aware than she already had been.
Every day I think of what it would have been like if the Darkling got to actually build a Grisha kingdom where every Grisha from all over the world had somewhere to go where they didn't have to look over their shoulders because they don't know which Otkazat'sya neighbours will do unspeakable things to them given the opportunity.
Every day I'm haunted by the thought that if he went somewhere without inhabitants and built a small kingdom from scratch, it might've been easier for him. Grisha would come to him seeking safety and they would build something beautiful like we know Fabrikators built the Little Palace and the Ice Court. But the Darkling loved Ravka too, not just Grisha. He was canonically Shu-passing and had Suli ancestors but he never turned his back on his Ravkan identity. He fought in useless Kings' wars who were prejudiced against his kind and wanted him dead, just to keep Ravka from collapsing.
The Darkling spent centuries trying to integrate Grisha into Ravka, trying to make them see they could live together, that they could be useful. Only to be spat in the face and denied association with Otkazatsya unless it was servitude. He even brought in Otkazatsya who could be trusted as his personal guard, meaning no matter how many times Otkazatsya have actually tried to kill and dehumanize him, he still wasn't against them.
It sickens me to no end that the fandom has concocted some bullshit idea that the Darkling isolated Grisha from people and wanted to enslave Otkazatsya.
And then we get to watch "his" cult consisting only of otkazat'sya, completely overlooking his Grisha nature and identity, dismissing his kind as if they didn't matter.
