Within the Interverse, a massive simulation designed to be humanity’s final frontier in the face of a rapidly decaying planet, MEMORY is a precious resource. Vast, criminal networks dedicated solely to the trafficking of gigabytes of MEMORY are running rampant, and unchecked. The Memories of DIGIZENS, those directly uploaded into the Interverse with no physical world counterpart, fetch a particularly pretty penny. It’s unknown as to why, but there are murmurs that deep in the trenches of Digizens’ MEMORY may lie the keys to the tumblers of uncovering the secrets of this vastly sophisticated network. Digizens are going missing, and people are talking. Paranoia permeates the expanse. This is why the Overseers are seeking out those with the “Potential”. THE YEAR IS 20XX.

Mankind’s continued interference with the planet Earth has come to a broil. Climate change has run rampant, causing even some of the most temperate parts of the globe to become uninhabitable for humans. Deforestation leading to increased exposure to exotic species carrying pathogens previously unrecorded has come to bite the dominant species of the pale blue dot.

Enter SA-XX, an incredibly nasty pathogen stemming from an unknown subspecies of sloth in the Amazon. It is highly contagious, with a harrowing, horrifying 5% survival rate even in perfectly healthy people. The global economy has shut down, world leaders have succumbed to the virus in but a matter of days, and hospital staff are abandoning their posts. Humanity has faced its fair share of apocalypses, but this one seems poised to be the one to rule them all.

Or so we thought…

Meet the Maiden, a modern marvel of science and technology. It’s not a vaccine. It’s not a special suit. It’s actually a waving white flag, a symbol of humanity’s resignation letter of defeat to the SA-XX. Resembling a coffin, the Maiden is a device of which one can enter and then uplink their consciousness into a vastly sophisticated digital network known as the Interverse. Numerous exabytes in size, the Interverse is a simulation of modern society in its beta stages developed years before the current crises assailing mankind. However, with a technological undertaking of such unfathomable scale, the Interverse is in an imperfect state. Glitches, oddities, and errors plague the simulation. A mysterious group known as the “Overseers”, the alleged architects of the realm, come to those within the simulation with “potential”. The ones selected by the “Overseers” are given a simple task: to traverse into the most unstable regions of the Interverse and cleanse it of the violent oddities within, so that those humans trapped in the physical world can find refuge within the rapidly overcrowding safety of humanity’s final frontier.

Oh, and one last thing…

As wondrous as the Maiden is, in order to prevent anarchy within the Interverse, it has one main catch: any act sustained within the Interverse will have its reverberations felt in the “real” world, by the real “self. Basically…
