electrical engineering project benefits Jones Observatory

UTC Jones Observatory has been opening its dome for star gazers since 1936. It was in desperate need of rehab, as the doors to the dome were operated manually. Budget constraints have delayed upgrades at the observatory, but this semester Dr. Michel E. Holder’s electrical engineering students stepped in with their senior class project. “The students have automated opening and closing the doors of the dome,” Holder said. “They also performed a fine adjustment of the observatory’s telescope. This is Chattanooga’s only high-powered telescope.” Intricate work performed by the students may not be understood by the public, but the results are obvious to the appreciative observatory staff, housed in the UTC Department of Physics, Geology and Astronomy. “They helped bring the observatory into the 21st century,” said Jack Pitkin, Operations Manager of the UTC Jones Observatory. “The dome was built in 1936 with appropriate materials and technology of the time. To open the dome with a series of cables hasn’t gotten any easier over the years. It was working, but just barely.” Pitkin said the student engineers installed an elegant system that can be activated with the flick of a switch. “They considered power failure, how to automatically stop the process manually and even an emergency shut down procedure,” Pitkin said. Work began on the project in mid-spring semester, according to student Christy Snyder. Both Snyder and Walter Hooper said the project taught them about circuit board fabrication and electrical code for wiring. Pitkin said he hopes this senior project will be the cornerstone for other electrical improvements at the observatory. Holder would like to see a future senior electrical engineering project synchronize the observatory’s telescope with the dome, taking into account the rotation of the earth. HMH co-sponsored the January 27th NAIOP Brokers Panel Luncheon at the Hyatt Regency in Santa Clara. The event drew close to 180 real estate industry professionals to hear local leaders discuss the challenges facing Silicon Valley commercial real estate in 2011. HMH showcased its Landscape Architectural services that include landscape design integrating Bay-Friendly landscape principles, irrigation auditing and irrigation design. Bill Sowa, manager of the Landscape Architecture division is a Qualified Bay-Friendly Landscape Professional and Lisa Harris, Project Landscape Architect has completed the requirements to be a Certified Irrigation Auditor. Both are skilled at planting and irrigation design. HMH prepared an informational brochure highlighting how these services can save money for building owners and operators through the reduction of landscape maintenance and the efficient use of water for irrigation. Montreal, Quebec – Future Electronics today announced a collaboration with Montreal-based McGill University on four lighting and renewable energy projects designed by 41 engineering students as part of their senior-year course requirements. One of the projects, an energy-efficient LED fixture for underground transit use, earned a graduation prize for the four participating students. Future Lighting Solutions, a provider of LED lighting components and solution support, and Future Energy Solutions, a new sister company dedicated to helping reduce global energy consumption, supplied LEDs and other system components, training in solid state lighting technology, access to proprietary engineering software, and engineering support including optical and thermal simulations. Both are divisions of Montreal-based Future Electronics, the third largest electronic component distributor in the world. The cross-disciplinary, two-semester initiative involved the university’s engineering, law and management departments. It marked the third collaboration between Future Lighting Solutions and McGill faculty and students since 2007. “This partnership with Future Lighting Solutions and Future Energy Solutions gave our engineering students the opportunity to develop real-world applications, work alongside a team of experts, and see the various challenges involved,” said James J. Clark, Associate Dean, Academic, Faculty of Engineering at McGill. “Participating students said it was an extraordinarily valuable experience to interact with Future’s engineers and executives.” “This collaboration is part of our commitment to providing hands-on experience to the engineers of tomorrow,” said Jamie Singerman, Worldwide Corporate VP, Future Lighting Solutions. “It also strengthens our relationship with McGill and connects us with talented students who may be following a career path in solid state lighting.” The fixture design that won the Mechanical Engineering department’s annual Harry Pearce Prize used 48 neutral white LUXEON® Rebel LEDs to illuminate an underground train station platform. The other three projects included an LED street light designed to meet urban road requirements in China, an eco-city review of technology for sustainable living, and an energy audit of the Future Electronics offices in Pointe-Claire.
