Chisato is my all time favorite bandori character, has been since I was 15ish. Recently I’ve been playing around with the idea of SZPD Chisato, so I thought it’d be fun to share my thoughts. This is more focused on the band stories and earlier events since she was unhealthier before her character development. Read more if interested :)
Chisato is a realistic person who values pragmatism over emotional matters. That is how she is and that is how she sees herself; she’s very aware of her own inability to ”dream”. Much like many schizoid people, she considers herself a boring person, explicitly stating that she lacks the ability to cry or feel anger. However, she’s shown crying, she’s shown getting angry, so why does she see herself that way? Schizoid defense mechanism of detachment from powerful affects. One interesting part of SZPD is how negative emotions can get so overwhelming that the person feels they must suppress them. I believe this is exactly what Chisato is doing; throwing away the pain while focusing on things beyond the emotional world. This causes issues for her, as seen in her relationships and even in her acting in the When the flowers bloom event. Additionally, she doesn’t seem to feel positive emotions with the same intensity as negative ones, which is also a trait related to SZPD. She consistently prioritizes other things over what would make her happy, perhaps because she doesn’t feel much happiness to begin with.
I also want to mention other schizoid traits she demonstrates. She has a strong drive to succeed, but I believe that instead of external factors, this comes from her own perfectionism. Expectations from others are intolerable. One example of this is how she gets angry at the other members of Pastel Palettes for trying to cheer her on. She takes their comments about how she can do anything as pressure, and feels stressed out instead of supported. She doesn’t even consider the possibility that it was meant to be a supportive comment. Genuine emotional support feels foreign and inauthentic to her. Other SZPD traits that come to mind would be lack of spontaneity and negative beliefs about the world (due to her experience with the entertainment industry).
Her social contacts also play a huge role in why I view her as schizoid. As I mentioned before, emotional sentiments aren’t her strong suit. She doesn’t see a point in expressing them. Simple as that. Affectionate gestures make her uncomfortable, and she herself shows care mostly by helping others with practical matters. She’s even hesitant to answer Eve’s question on if she loves Pastel Palettes in the second band story. And if we go even further back, she was hesitant to be a part of the band in the first place, instead being eager to leave them behind. It took her a long time to even be able to entertain the idea of loving the other members of the band or accept herself as an important part of it. Despite the fact she’s shown yearning for connection in her childhood, she struggles to feel close to others. This kind of thing is common in SZPD. Being alone sucks, being with others sucks, it can feel impossible to win. Chisato also enjoys spending time by herself, or with a select few people. She’s actually quite blunt about trying to get away from other people, especially Kaoru in the earlier stories and Tae in the white day event. As for her current love for her bandmates and friends… She still processes things in her own way, and that’s okay.
Tldr: I love Chisato. Shes so me. Thank you all for reading ♡
