The smell of fresh bread was always pleasant and soothing, even on Dolores' worst days. After a series of misfortunes (an accident at the infirmary, an overcooking of last night's dinner, a new argument with her mother), it truly felt that nothing she did was right. At least there were very few ways one could go wrong when buying the morning bread.
She looked up at the person behind the counter. They knew her well enough by now to know her usual. Honey whole wheat bread, which Dolores and her mother usually had every morning, lightly toasted with a side of eggs and a cup of coffee. While the bread was being selected and bagged, Dolores pulled out her wallet and took out the money... And then she was told the last wheat loaf had just been sold.
Dolores repressed a huff. That was just her luck. When was the last time this had happened to her? And what had she asked for instead? In the meantime, as she kept looking at the list of available breads, the employee went on to attend to the next customer. "Okay..." she thought out loud. "What can I have that's not boring old white bread?"
there's nothing like an iced vanilla latte with a pastry on the side to make it midway through a day, dakota likes to think. habit has brought her to just like heaven, not taking into account the sweet tooth she has that always drags her feet into the establishment. she eagerly waits in line, like she always does, eyeballing the surrounding patrons just inching forward - maybe even disappointingly so when learning their preferred item was out of stock. that's truly the definition of a real bummer.
as she makes it to the counter, she dons a cordial smile, placing her usual order: two cinnamon rolls, warmed on the verge of hot. they come quick enough, her fingers already prying open one of the containers to rip a piece off and pop it into her mouth as she simultaneously pulls out her card to pay. it's the question that drifts through the air from the woman standing beside that makes her halt, panning over as she chomps down a bite. "maybe... one of these?" she knocks her head towards the cinnamon rolls. "if you're in the mood for something sweet, that is. never too early to have dessert, y'know."
