Helped with making some art & concepts for Rain World: Nadir.
Go give it a watch, it was very fun to see everyone's artwork be put into one great video with a fun plot too (no spoilers!)
Below are FULL spoilers for art & concepts I made for it. So again I ENCOURAGE you to watch the video in full before reading!
Rain World: Nadir. <- Link again for good measure.
Pre-Region
First thing I did is front-and-center, the thumbnail of the video.
It took around 1-2 other drafts before arriving at this, featuring two creatures from the first 4 regions, with The Cauldron fully omitted so as to surprise people with a 5th major area.
I also made a second version with added exposure effects, but that went unused in the final product itself. A shame, but ultimately passable!
Here's the title too, there were 3 other versions of this that I made too used, and a part of me is glad that the first version I made was the one used because I had the most fun doing it. They can be found in the channel's discord if you want to see the cut versions of these 2.
Wink Wink Nudge Nudge Cough Cough.
Anyways.
This actually is meant to take place within Signal Spires (or at least I tried to imply as much.), a caustic golden portal intercepting The Watcher there. Plus gold & pink just looked good.
Particularly, I noticed there wasn't much art on the golden portals themelves, so I figured I'd step up to put one down. One of the last pieces I contributed ironically.
Windswept Plains
This region I made the fewest for, and appearingly incidental too as I didn't make this for anywhere in specific. Nonetheless it goes here first.
My art for the regions themselves was relatively sparse, but I am surprised that they made room to include my extra background CG for the ending of the region.
Deepwater Chasm
This one I made two for, but one didn't make the cut (it was a CG of Oracle Vine anatomy, again see the discord for yourself Cough Cough). This one actually was slightly different when I was sketching it out, with The Envoy being at the top staring downwards, however I decided to have them emerging from the bottom to be more kraken-like.
The Oracle Vines being whisps in ripple space was my idea, separate from the creator of them that I got permission to do. I like to imagine any ripplespawn that smacks into them gets absorbed as more knowledge in the vines, but that's not necessarily canon to Nadir or in general.
Interred Ruins
This is arguably my favorite region, if for no other reason than I love the idea of it being deep underground in a previous civilization's tomb, with remnants of them barely clinging on to life.
I took that vibe, and made a hell crab pyramid grandma out of it.
The Housemaidens.
What's said in the video I don't feel like repeating here, but here are a few interesting changes between my proposal of the concept, and the final version in the video:
No mention of Item Smuggling, it's main idea.
What I originally had in mind was Housemaidens would be placed along important areas in Interred Ruins, where you would have to smuggle items past them either through Flash Bangs, using another creature as Bait, or by riding on their top like a Raindeer. If they noticed you with ANY items, that would be almost a guaranteed death sentence.
Their relation to Guardians.
I originally intended them to be separate for the most part, with only the symbols adorning them being the same as the Think Wheels on them. Likely the very same people who made them. I do see where that came from though with how they function.
"Pristine Floors"
Them floors are dusty as all hell. I imagined them dusting off the walls and ornaments around the Ruins, leaving them to accumulate into a visible layer of grey sand underneath them, only caring if there happens to be a lizard or organism underneath and making unsightly marks beneath.
Keep In Mind:
I am not mad about any of these changes, they suit the video and intended world as they are and I quite like how they were altered, I just thought I'd list off what's different. A more thorough concept sheet (which THANKFULLY wasn't used) can be found here:
The Cauldron
Another region that received a lot of love during the process of creation, and my third favorite (behind Deepwater Chasm). I only made one thing for here, but it was the first thing I submitted to the concept (and my first submission in an art-heavy video in general) so it holds a unique spot as a kind of personal lightning-in-a-bottle for me.
The Precedents.
These, unlike The Housemaidens, were actually designed to be directly linked to Guardians in base-game Rain World. Effectively they are forgotten prototypes that would eventually become Guardians themselves, a predecessor, precursor, and a precedent. The original iteration.
Similarly, these were also slightly changed in the video, though I won't go into bulletpoints of it, they did get the rough gist of them being malfunctioning & forgotten due to their time spent above the Void Sea itself, however what was left out was the fact I imagined them as directly reanimated, their cycles tied into a knot. Also similarly, I imagined them as being linked to eachother sort of like scavs, with a much more rudimentary reputation system. Either they kill you, or they super-kill you.
I do still like how they turned out though, being barely-sapient zombies working off of a twisted version of their objectives. (Which in my concept I directly described as "... resurged into an existence eerily similar to the very principles they were built to filter out." to quote.
As same with before, the raw sheet can be found here:
And ripplespace version for good measure:
Closing Remarks.
Overall, very fun to work on especially as the first art-project i've contributed too. I enjoy making small impacts sporadically across niche internet spaces like this.
Cheers to the next one!
And if you got to down here without watching the video, uh
sucks i guess? Not going to spoil anything about what's past this point in the video itself though, go watch it proper if you haven't.
Working on a talksprite sheet for one of the Deltarune characters i have (that slightly predates "I" actually). Rough gist is that they're the Vessel themself, taking on the role of a player due to their creator / the actual "player" vanishing midway through the gonermaker process.
obviously there's a bit more than that that I do wanna explore with this semi-AU, though. If anyone has a Kris sheet that they would be fine with renting out to me that would be very much appreciated! If none reply that's also fine, I'll probably either make my own or look on sprite resource for some.
Made at like 11 in the morning yesterday and I have seldom other outlets to firehose my brain through. Kind of unfounded in retrospective but considering the fact that Ralsei is an unreliable narrator, I personally wouldn't entirely eliminate the possibility on its own.
