BACKSTORY:
The Cavalcante family had always been a unit. For as long as Alice could remember, Ma and Papai had been her first and most stalwart friends. They’d moved to London from Paraná when Alice was a child, calling her Alice to help her fit in. Alice was a quiet child, stubborn and used to getting her way. While not one for the spotlight, Alice wanted to make a name for herself; she dreamed of changing the world.
Her choice to become a doctor—just like both her parents—was an easy one. She had the graceful hands of her surgeon father and the sharp eye of her cardiologist mother. Though the Cavalcantes owned a private practice, they often went on medical missions to less privileged areas, and Alice often came along to help, proving a good fit for the world of medicine. Her parents were well-known doctors, both for their skill and their acts of charity. It was only logical that Dumbledore would be among their friends, and, given their similar proclivities, that he would trust them with the terrible hunch he had about the innocuous disease he’d found.
The Cavalcantes had been skeptical at first, but the more research they did, the more sure they were that what they were confronted with was dangerous. Alice was only in her second year at university, taking a degree in Biochemistry and living away from home. Even then, she could feel the tension at home, and her parents had never been good at keeping secrets from her. She quickly discovered what they’d been hiding, and all her energy went toward working on a cure. When Dumbledore proposed they form a community underground, the Cavalcantes originally declined, but soon both Alice’s parents caught the virus.
Alice took care of her parents as well as she could, but she watched first her mother, then her father, pass away. For a time, no one could rouse her, and she spent weeks on end in secluded corners of the Underground, no food nor water for days. When she went back to Dumbledore, she did everything she could to help. She soon trained to become a Protector, becoming one of the first.
