Dear Eponine.
When you taught me how to write, did you ever think I’d use it to write down my goodbyes to you? Our lives were always risky, but even so, I never thought I’d outlive you. I found your body, you know. I don’t think that dad even looked. Until then I almost believed it was a misunderstanding, that I’d come home and you’d be there, a little worse for wear but still alive. Seeing you dead…Ep I can’t describe it. You were lying in a side street by the barricade, not in the cafe with the others. It didn’t seem right to me, but I’ve never been strong enough to carry you, I’m sorry. I think we’re moving away, dad’s been talking about America. I don’t want to go anywhere without you. I’ve never believed much in heaven, but if there’s anything after death, that’s what you deserve; I don’t care what the church says.
If I ignore all the blood, I can almost believe you’re just sleeping.
I’ve got nobody but you to leave this letter with, so I’ll just pin it to your jacket with a rosette. Hopefully the blood blots out these words, I never meant them for anyone but you.
