I was listening to Civil Wars earlier this week and realised something shocking.
The acoustic guitar is way too heavily compressed on so many tracks.
But instead of letting it bother me I started thinking about the effect that this heavy compression on the guitars had on me emotionally. I...
well observed, something that has definitely happened to me as I produced more was that my regard for "proper mixing" or even palatable mixing went right out the window. I just used all of the distortions and accidents of really fast recording processes as indelibly part of the final artistic product as opposed to flattening them out in postproduciton.
