sometimes when i think i'm being too unyielding in my feminism i end up having conversations like i did with my father today and it reminds me exactly of why i am who i am.

no but it's always funny how older generations try to push you into marriage and motherhood by making it sound like utterly miserable, tedious drudgery. being told i should get married and have kids because it'll teach me the necessary values of self-sacrifice, responsibility, and how to take care of others is like... okay, so what's in it for me? all you've told me is that to be a wife and mother is to serve others. so why exactly would i want that?

I saw discussion somewhere that there's a real dearth of romance content for black women which they tend to fill with things like reality tv and it made me realise that I'm glad I didn't consume much romance content when I was in my formative years because I do believe it spared me a lot of psychic damage. I'm glad I only got to learn how awful and disappointing men are (directly) when I was pushing 30 and thus it was too late to affect me.

I really think certain people believed—or hoped—that I would mellow out and change when I left my 20s and while there are things that I inevitably did compromise on, less because I stopped believing them and more because living those ideals became increasingly impractical, I'm still as militantly feminist as I always have been. I don't think any of the conclusions I've come to are wrong or have been disproven. Quite the opposite. Even the quiet negotiations I've hedged in my personal life has only sharpened my observations in ways I didn't understand the nuances of before.

a very common thing i see posited is the idea that historically, fathers could not both love their daughters and see them as their personal property to dispose of as they saw fit, and i think it comes from this difficulty people have in understanding that a parent can be affectionate and loving in many ways, but also put their own desires before that of their child/have misogynistic views about women's roles in society.

i also think it's very common for modern day commentators to overlook the fact that many men who genuinely loved their wives also pressured their wives to keep having children until they died or were physically disabled by it.

I never gave the argument any merit but I cannot take seriously any insinuation that sexuality dictates why women gravitate towards male characters. My ex-boyfriend who is very straight told me that the main male character in my books was the only reason he kept reading.

There are TONS of women in the series. TONS.

And yet.

For as much as it sucks to no longer have a stable income being self-employed has done wonders for my social life such that I can understand that the reason I started leaning heavily on my online connections was directly as a result of doing salaried work.

I don't know what to do when it seems like there's no desirable balance between the two.
