Have you been seeing the Argentina discourse with the world cup? Honestly I find it kind of funny and gratifying that there's finally a large noticeable pushback against the "amerikkka" (but I really mean black and brown americans only) hatred that majority white latinos love to indulge in without any pushback. I'm a casual football enjoyer so I know this: Argentina is already pretty unpopular with the rest of Latam but in normal circumstances years past the rest of Latam would be cheering for them nonetheless especially against Spain. People, however, were already sour this year because of Messi refusing to retire and their idiot president Milei. Actually though, a huge contribution to this backlash was how the Argentinian fans treated the twitch streamer ishowspeed. Crowds of them at a game were literally calling him the n word and making monkey sounds because he was cheering for Portugal. I'm not a part of the twitch world at all but he's grown to be very internationally beloved afaik so there was pretty instant widespread global disgust. I have quite a few latino friends and they were cheering for Spain. Again, my latino friends (none white), were cheering for Spain. That's how much collective shame Latam has had towards Argentina during the games. I'm seeing leftist Argentinians cry about lack of solidarity and how people are capitulating to the Spanish colonizer and for the most part it's just not working. I'm glad black progessives are able to ride this wave for a time, it's so long overdue. They're consistently asked to overlook violent racism in South America to prove they hate America enough I can't imagine how demoralizing and painful that must be. "Please overlook my horrible racism and do the right thing and cheer for the football team I love because imperialism???" Very hard sell you clowns.
it has been a fascinating discursive diversion. my favorite is all the people calling argentina the israel of latin america. it feels particularly evil and mean spirited considering that argentina is infamous for welcoming nazis after world war ii, but worst of all it is a terribly glib thing to say. very “spiritually israel”. i love that the worst thing these people can imagine is the country of israel … they wouldn’t last a moment in the asylum they raised me in (the world of nuance).
anyway, i have argentinian mutuals who have been writing thoughtfully about how it feels to have the entire world calling your country a racist hellhole due to the behavior of your sports fans (and president). i understand it must be infuriating for americans especially to be criticizing your countrymen for racism and having a maniac as your head of state lol. but i do think the criticisms i’m seeing of the structural and cultural antiblack racism in latin american is refreshing, because truly so many latino leftists have gotten away with thinly veiled antiblack racism for years under the guise of “anti imperialism”.
also, this is pithy but when will dumbass americans and europeans learn that latinos can be white? a big part of why the left is attacking argentina as “israel” is because they’re shocked to see a bunch of gingers running around speaking spanish. their understanding of race and ethnicity is about as complex as my newborn son’s understanding of kierkegaard
