The ‘Unsexy’ Fashion Topic
There’s always lots of talk about bag silhouettes, colors, fabrics, and trends, but we hardly ever address the important subject of security, because, frankly, it’s just not a “sexy” topic.
But, if you’ve hardly ever given a thought to the security features (or lack thereof) of your bags, you may want to read this.
While I don’t think a bag exists that cannot be infiltrated by a true professional, there are certain precautions you can take … especially when traveling. If you’ve got the right bag, and know how to use it, you may be able to deter a thief.
1. Zippers are meant to be closed. Don’t walk around with your bag wide open … this is as good as an open invitation to thieves. And keep the zipper pull in the front, where you can see it, so that the bag opens from front to back.
2. Keep valuables attached to the inside of your bag with a lanyard. I recommend keeping credit cards in a separate holder or compartment, so that if your wallet is lifted (or if you leave it at the cashier’s counter at Macy’s … been there, done that), you still have your cards in a safe place.
3. If you’re using a backpack, it’s advisable to keep your phone and wallet in the back pocket, which is, of course, on your back and can’t be accessed by anyone while you’re wearing the bag.
4. If you’re using a tote or shoulder bag/cross-body bag, always keep money, cards, phone, etc. in closed zipper compartments, either in a back pocket close to your body or inside the bag in a zippered compartment. Open bags, that don’t have zippers, are high risk.
5. NEVER hang your bag on the back of a chair at a restaurant (been there done that … story didn’t end well).
6. Always keep your bag close to you. Thieves don’t walk around with a neon sign on their forehead. If someone “innocently” bumps into you in the street, consider it an attempt at pickpocketing.
7. Make sure that your bag is as “cut-proof” as possible. Don’t keep valuables in places in your bag that can be accessed by cutting it open from the outside. If a bag is designed properly, it should provide protection against this nasty method of thievery.
8. A backpack, if designed properly, is your best bet against “strap-cutting” thieves. It’s more difficult for them to cut both straps simultaneously without you feeling something.
9. Fanny packs and belt bags are popular for travel (although, I’ve heard stories of theft from these as well). So, while these do offer a bit of extra security, they are not fool-proof.
10. If you’re carrying a clutch, you may want to use one with a wrist strap, so that it can’t just be easily snatched out of your hand.
If you have any ideas on bag security, or personal experiences with bag theft, please share them here.

5,000 Shades of Everything
An online customer recently asked me to describe a color of a bag on my site in more detail because she wanted to make sure it was the color she saw on her computer.
It got me to thinking about how we all describe colors online. I can call a pink bag “hot pink,” “baby pink,” “cerise,” or whatever I think best describes the shade. But the name I decide to call it won’t tell you the actual shade of the bag that you’ll ultimately hold in your hands.
And how important is the color accuracy anyway?
Well, unless you are trying to match a bag to a pair of shoes, and you want them to be exactly alike, it really isn’t that important if the shade varies slightly from what you perceive it to be.
It’s very difficult to achieve 100% accuracy in color depiction (that includes black and white) … and, frankly, if I’ve managed to get a color to even 90% accuracy, I believe it’s close enough.
Let me put it this way: If you were looking at bags in a department store, would the color you see in the store be the same color you see when you take the bag outside in daylight? And doesn’t the shade vary in fluorescent lighting, LED, CFL, halogen, and incandescent lighting? Point made.

For Heaven’s Sake … Buy the Bag!
In one of my rare spiritual moods, I had an epiphany: I realized that Handbags represent 1/3 of the the ‘Holy Trinity’ of fashion: Clothes/Shoes/Bags.
And if you’re like me, you’ll readily admit that buying a new bag is truly a spiritually uplifting experiencing.
While clothes and shoes are obvious necessities (you can’t go out naked or barefoot), you could actually live a long and healthy life without a handbag. (Shopping bag ladies seem to make it work.)
If handbags were just about carrying stuff, how can we explain those microscopic mini-bags, with interiors so small you have to choose between taking your compact OR your phone?
Regardless of size or silhouette, the handbag is an important part of the trinity. It’s the piece de resistance in your overall “look.” Handbags have that je ne sais quoi quality that makes us feel prettier, cooler, younger, smarter, and more fashion savvy.
So, how do you choose the bag that’s right for your look and your lifestyle? (Remember: a good bag should complement both.)
While there aren’t many studies on how many handbags the average woman owns, the few references I found put the number anywhere from 8 to 21. And, it seems, the average woman buys a new bag every 3 months.
So, you’re coming up to the 3-month mark since your last bag purchase. You’ve determined your budget. And THIS time you are going to buy the “perfect” bag. The one you know will be your ‘bbf’ (best bag forever).
Here are the questions you should be asking yourself before you buy the bag:
1. What is it for? Work/every-day/travel/formal wear?
2. Is it a seasonal bag that has to complement certain outfits?
3. How important is comfort and functionality to me?
4. What type of bag suits my body size and shape?
Most of us tend to buy bags on the basis of “Love at first sight,” “Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead,” or “All the bloggers are talking about it!” and often overlook the features (or lack thereof) of a bag that might ultimately relegate it to the back of our closets.
So, before you buy what the fashion mavens are touting as the “IT” bag of the day, here are some things to consider:
1. Know what you want to carry in your bag. Make sure it has the compartments youneed. Too many or too few compartments can mean the difference between a bag you love to use and a bag that you will never use.
Note: Pockets that are simply there for decorative purposes, or an overdose of hardware, don’t serve any purpose other than making a bag unnecessarily heavy.
2. That brings us to the ideal weight of a bag. According to the various studies, your bag should ideally be under 2.2 pounds (one kilogram); a full bag should never be more than 10% of your body weight.
3. Make sure the straps are comfortable and that they don’t slide off your shoulder(s). There’s nothing more annoying than having to constantly adjust or hold on to your bag to keep it from slipping.
4. Make sure the bag is well-made and offers a warranty. Check the stitching and the seams … especially at the points that are connected to handles and straps. Test the zippers for smooth sliding, and the metal attachments for sturdiness.
5. Last but not least … buy the bag if you love it. Even if it’s not the perfect one for you … 3 months isn’t that far off.
