CIA Misled US Congress With Regard To Missing American According To Sen. McCain

US Sen. John McCain said Sunday that the Central Intelligence Agency has not really told the entire facts to the Congress with regards to the details surrounding the American who went missing while on a secret intelligence mission to Iran. According to the Iranian Foreign Minister, the American Robert Levinson is “not incarcerated by the government and I believe the government runs, pretty much, good control of the country.”

Working for the CIA

Based on an Associated Press investigation, it was found out that Levinson was in fact working for the Central Intelligence Agency investigating the Iranian government. The United States has long publicly espoused that Levinson is a private citizen who traveled to Iran for the purpose of doing private business. McCain said, “The CIA did not tell the truth to the American Congress about Mr. Levinson.” He is however, confident that the United States is doing all it possibly can in order to learn the details of what happened to Levinson. He, nevertheless, countered that the Obama administration has not been more forthcoming with any information they have.

Brother Of Paris Hilton Assaulted At Miami Party

Police authorities say that the brother of controversial socialite Paris Hilton was the victim of an assault that happened during a party in Miami. According to police reports, 24 year old Barron Hilton told law enforcers that a man struck him in the face after they had a misunderstanding at a party in a Miami Beach home. Hilton was treated for deep cuts and bruises on his forehead. He published a photo of his injuries on the internet.

Suspect Wanted Him to Leave

Based on the report witnesses told police that the suspect wanted the victim to leave and then hit him on the face with a still unidentified object. Hilton or any of the witnesses were unable to identify who the suspect was. The suspect then fled the scene in a dark green SUV. The report says that Hilton refused treatment from fire rescue workers who came to the scene.

President Obama Mourns The Passing Of Nelson Mandela

President Obama counted himself as one of the millions of people that was influenced by freedom icon Nelson Mandela. The president on Thursday mourned the passing of the anti-apartheid hero with whom he shares a distinction of being his country’s first black president. According to president Obama, “He no longer belongs to us. He belongs to the ages.”

Countless Millions Inspired

President Obama said that he was one of the countless millions who was inspired by the great leader and drew a lot of inspiration from his life. He said that he could not fully imagine his own life without the brilliant example that Nelson Mandela has put forward.

Nelson Mandela died at the age of 95. He had spent most of the year in and out of the hospital and his condition had prevented a meeting with Obama when the president visited South Africa just this summer. The president instead made an emotional visit with his family to the prison at Robben Island where the leader was held in captivity.

The US stock index continued its sluggish performance at the beginning of the month. The market fell for the fourth consecutive day, the longest losing streak in more than a couple of months. Despite a report by a payroll company that US companies added more jobs to the market last month, many investors are worried that the growth might mean the Fed might be pulling back on its stimulus sooner than what was expected.

Shares of Sears declined sharply after its own CEO reduced his stake in the department store business. Latest “Fast & Furious” Movie Delayed After Lead Star’s Death

Filming for “Fast & Furious 7” has been temporarily put on hold after the accidental death of star Paul Walker. Filming of the movie was set to continue this week in Atlanta but was canceled Monday and Tuesday. A Universal Pictures spokesperson declined to comment on when the film will resume. Last September, production for the 7th installment on the franchise began. While a large portion of the movie was said to have been completed, the film is still not yet finished.

Play Date Most Likely Delayed

Given the circumstances, a July 11, 2014 play date may be difficult, if not impossible to attain. The studio is expected to move forward with the movie but it has not yet announced how it will reshoot or adjust the plot given the death of one of its stars.

Paul Walker died in a fiery road accident in Valencia, California when the 2005 Porsche Carrera GT he was riding in lost control and crashed into a light pole. Fans all over the world have expressed disbelief and sadness over the loss.

Rocket Internet, a serial start up firm in Berlin, Germany is targeting the peer to peer lending market as it launches a new website in the nation. The company is not wrong in doing so far in Germany, the peer lending market is a rapidly growing one at present.

Linking private lenders and consumers

Rocket Internet has said that via its website called lendico.de, it plans to link up private lenders with loan-seeking consumers. The amount that consumers can borrow via such link ups would range between 1000 euros and 25000 euros.

Lendico.de further mentioned that the interest rates for the loan would start at 2.99 percent, which is around just half the typical lending rates in Germany, the biggest economy in Europe.

PetroChina Acquires Share In Iraq Project From Exxon

PetroChina, a state owned company said that it had bought a stake in an Iraqi development project from the US major Exxon Mobil. The project is said to be of one of Iraq’s most promising oil fields.

25% Stake for Chinese giant

According to a statement released on Thursday, Exxon Mobil has sold 25% of the consortium to the Chinese giant in the 8.6 billion barrel West Qurna-1 field that lies in the southern Basra region. However, additional details of the financial deal between the two companies have not been disclosed.

Previously, Exxon had signed a similar deal with Iraq, with the first one coming in 2009 when the US major acquired a 60% stake. A second deal in 2011 angered Iraq since at that time Exxon had unilaterally signed the deal with the self-ruled Kurdish region that allowed the US hunt for oil in their region as well as in disputed territories.

While the exact terms of the deal have not been made known yet, Yahoo Sports revealed that the Twins had taken Nolasco aboard for four years at a price of $49 million. The amount is a hefty for the Twins, a team that is known to be quite stingy when it comes to handing out big-money deals to free agents.

The very fact that the Twins agreed to pay Nolasco such a huge sum shows how acute their need was.

Spanish Enrollment Tools’ Launch Delayed

It has now come to light that while the Spanish version of the HealthCare.gov provides basic information pertaining to the Obamacare insurance plans at present, it still does not allow customers to enroll online for the plans.

In response, Joanne Peters, spokeswoman for the US Health and Human services said that the Obama administration had planned for a quiet launch of the page sometime in early December without a lot of fanfare and advertising. Earlier the administration had promised that it would ready the Spanish sing up tools by the end of November; however, now that date has been postponed to early December.

This means that the Spanish speakers wanting to enroll themselves must get help from the bilingual call centers and then wait for an online option.

Secret US-Iran Talks Led To Nuke Deal

The Obama administration played the game very expertly. While the world watched the talks between the world powers and Iran over the latter’s nuclear program giving way to an agreement, what has come to light now, is that a few hand picked officials from the administration had laid the groundwork for the deal much before the weekend’s arrival.

The Groundwork

The spadework for the weekend’s nuclear deal, that is still said to be only tentative, consisted of a high-level, secret meeting between the chosen government officials and an Iranian delegation. The venue of the meeting was not Geneva, or even any place in Iran. The secret meeting, which was not known even to the allies of America, was conducted in Muscat, Oman as early as in September, as revealed by President Barack Obama to the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

It was only after these meetings that the US informed other world powers and it is only since then the nuke talks became public.

With both the sides having rested their cases, the grievance hearing of Alex Rodriguez to overturn his 211-game suspension came to an end on Thursday. The end came one day after the New York Yankees star player walked out angrily right in the middle of the hearing and decided that he would not testify in his own defense.

A-Rod lawyers to challenge in federal court

The two sides have now set a schedule to file briefs and replies the next month and will then submit the matter to arbitrator Frank Horowitz. The latter in turn, will take a decision on the issue in January. However, the exact timing of the decision that Horowitz will take is not certain. It is also not known whether the arbitrator will give his written opinion on the case along with the decision.

Meanwhile, the lawyers for the third baseman for the Yankees have vowed that they would challenge the ruling in the federal court.

LG Probes ‘Spying’ Claim

Appliance giant LG is looking at claims that some of its smart TVs divulge information about the users’ viewing habits despite activating the privacy setting.

‘Spying’ claim

This is a response to a blog by an IT consultant in the UK named Jason Huntley who described how the TV sends data of which channels are often viewed. He also stated that devices linked to the TV are not exempted from this “spying,” as file names and other data about the gadget are still sent out to the manufacturer.

Huntley expressed fear for the security of LG’s customers. He reasoned that even if the data acquired were not sent or not used in any way to spy on the consumer, hackers could use the practice for their own ends.

Looking into the complaint

After the blog post, LG said that it is already looking into the matter. The company said that customer privacy is their top priority and asked for the understanding and patience of consumers as they investigate the matter.

If proven true, LG may face court trials.

23 Killed In Suicide Bombings In Beirut, Lebanon

In what comes a ‘message of blood and death’ to Tehran and Hezbollah, suicide bombers attacked the Iranian Embassy in Beirut on Tuesday thereby killing 23 people, including a diplomat and wounding 140 others. Both Tehran and Hezbollah are strong supporters of the Syrian President Bashar Assad.

More Conflict for Lebanon

The twin bombing that occurred in a Shiite district of the Lebanese city has only contributed to the nation being pulled further down into a conflict that has already wreaked havoc in the deeply divided country. The bombing on Tuesday is said to be the deadliest in a string of attacks that have occurred recently targeting Shiite strongholds and Hezbollah in Lebanon.

An al-Qaida-linked outfit, which claimed responsibility for the attack, said that it had conducted the strike as a revenge for Hezbollah supporting Assad’s forces against primarily the Sunni rebels. Such attacks have increased fears in the nation that Islamist Extremists who are increasingly on the defensive in Syria, would hit back on Lebanon again and again.

Need For Speed : Aaron Paul’s New Gig

Fresh from the ending of “Breaking Bad,” Aaron Paul is now back, this time in the driver’s seat for the upcoming movie “Need For Speed.”

Stunt driven film

Although the plot remains vague, “Need For Speed” stars Paul as a car technician and street racer who is released from jail, imprisoned for a crime he didn’t commit.

Paul’s character revolves around high speed car chases and craving for sweet revenge with those responsible for his imprisonment.

The new trailer shows the film’s high speed, car crushing action, Paul flying across a canyon in his car, and even a bit of romance for Paul’s character, which are all the elements one would expect from a film based on a popular video game.

Real scenes

Need for Speed might be based on a racing video game, but film’s director wasn’t interested in digital representations for the feature movie. Almost everything people will see on screen is real, whether it’s a car jumping off a bridge.

Anyone familiar with the video game will know that it doesn’t have a narrative, just a lot of cool cars and locations for the races.

Need for Speed will hit the big screen on March 2014.

Outlook “Bleak” For Typhoon Haiyan Survivors

One week after the storm devastated the Philippines, aid workers helping survivors of Typhoon Haiyan in the country are describing the situation as bleak.

According to a spokesman for Medicins Sans Frontieres, the logistical issues of distributing aid are vast. Correspondents in Tacloban City, however, say that US military aircraft are beginning to bring in aid.

Death Toll

According to Philippine officials, the death toll has now risen to 3,621. Interior Secretary Mar Roxas says this figure was as of Thursday, and the actual number is likely higher.

The Philippines’ National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) says that there are a total of 2,360 confirmed deaths, however. The discrepancy may be due to the widespread devastation that is making the confirmation of casualties and the collation of information difficult.

Logistical Issues

According to Henry Gray, a spokesman for Medicins Sans Frontieres, workers who visited Guiuan in Eastern Samar described the situation as “bleak.”

With the public hospital in the area destroyed, Gray says the local officials asked them to support a local private clinic.

After earlier problems with looting, correspondents are saying that some supplies are now getting in, however. The US aircraft carrier, USS George Washington and two cruisers also arrived in Philippine waters on Thursday.
