Ok I saw a rb of this with some context and I only remember like half of it so I’m also using Google I may get some of this wrong

But apparently the “first errand” thing isn’t just a cute little fact about the little kid, it’s a totally real thing done in Japan to teach kids that they can like rely on the community to offer assistance if they need it. They send their kids (like 2-3 years old) out alone to perform a relatively simple errand like going to a convenience store and buying a carton of milk. (There’s even a tv show where a camera crew follows children as they accomplish this first errand.) It’s not uncommon to see kids as young as 6-7 riding the subway alone because they’ve gained this sense of independence that comes from knowing that there will be people to help out if they need it.

Holy shit, in many (god, most) places in the USA you’d get reported to child protective services for sending young kids out alone. People have been reported and investigated for letting their elementary-aged kids play at the playground a block away by themselves. (I was allowed to do that all the time–and my parents were actually some of the more protective of the ones I knew–and it’s actually safer now!)

Also, ngl, I know those bicycles are considered dorky as hell in Japan (or at least, that’s what I’ve been told) and they’re nicknamed mamacharis because they’re a “mom” bicycle, but look how cute and practical they all are! Lights and chainguards and kickstands and fenders and baskets! (My Linus mixte has everything but the basket–I prefer a rear rack and panniers–but the chainguard and lights were added by me; the bike didn’t come with them.)

I know that societies that are more centered around community than the individual (a huge generalization, I’m aware) have their own faults, but good lord, how many American young adults would be better off these days if given that sense of independence, mastery of tasks, contribution to their household, and knowledge that they could depend on the people around them when they needed help?!

@lauramcewan I know you have an interest in “free range” kids. Look at this! (part two of the show is shorter and on youtube, it was auto-suggested when the video ended.)
