Personality Analysis - Louis Tomlinson

A lot of the times Louis is described as immature, but in a lot of ways this doesn’t do him justice. Are there occasions where he gets bored in interviews and he does stupid silly things to amuse himself? Yes. Does he sometimes make loud noises or shout things to get attention back on him. Yes. Is his “funniness” simply from these occasions though? I would argue a resounding no! There have been many instances where he just has impeccable timing and the joke in and of itself isn’t all that funny but it is perfectly executed in the right moment with the right amount of blasé or sarcasm that he has the entire room in hysterics. That sort of timing and delivery is something that he just has naturally, it’s not done on purpose or for delivery it’s just his personality. Not only that, but very often his remarks is quite witty. He has a different sort of intelligence than the others, he obviously had no success in school grades, but he often makes very insightful responses to interview questions. For that reason it’s selling him short to write off his behavior as “for attention” or “immature”. I think a lot of the reason that he “acts out” is that he is always looking for that thrill. He’s always pushing the boundaries with what is acceptable and what the rules are, he’s always looking for adrenaline activities, or asking interviewers to ask the “controversial” questions.

Louis is also very caring and loving. You can see that in all of his relationships. I think the most evident though is how he treats his family. The fact that he has never shied away from talking about being close with his mom, and talking about how he talks to her on the phone or through text everyday says a lot about his character, and is very revealing about what kind of person he is. It’s one thing to be close with your friends, another to love your siblings, but for a teenage boy to treat their mother as a best friend shows the strength of his devotion to his family. I think it’s also particularly inspiring to see how loving he is to his sisters, especially considering they are not his full sisters. While that doesn’t necessarily make a difference, it’s pretty common for half-siblings to be distant from each other or to feel isolated. But that doesn’t seem to the case with Louis and his sisters. Not only do they all seem very protective of each other; Louis whenever brings up his mom or sisters and even vice versa we have seen both his mom and his own sister’s stand up for him when they feel people are attacking him. There is an unwavering loyalty between them. He also spoils them like crazy and he is in every sense of the world a seemingly perfect big brother, being so sweet and nurturing, sending them back gifts, treating them to concert tickets, bringing them out to see him, taking them on holiday etc. I also see that with the way he is with the boys. It’s in his personality to be caring, and I cannot count the number of times one of the boys had said Louis is one of the best to go to if they want to talk about something serious, and that he can turn off the “goofiness” when they need him, and that he gives really good advice. He is also very natural around kids, he knows exactly how to interact with them, how to hold them and play with them, and those kinds of behavior, being so instinctive showcases his nurturing qualities.

People very often joke about Liam being “Daddy Direction” but I have always seen Louis as the leader. He’s the instigator in their schemes and adventures. He starts a majority of the trends, and inside jokes and he can change the mood of an interview in an instant. If Louis is in a goofy mood, the others are livelier and joking and distracted, while contrarily if he is quiet and subdued the others are the same. They seem to take their cues from him. It also often gets overlooked that in a lot of ways he holds them together. There is a certain way the boys act around Louis, and he is the only who gets that side of them out. For Liam, Louis keeps him from overstressing, he has taught him how to let loose, how to enjoy the adventure rather than worrying about the little things. I think Liam could be blinded by his nature to fret and under the pressure of making sure everything was going “according to plan” he could end up being both unhappy and also driving a wedge between the others. I think Louis is his de-stressor; he is the one who teaches him to be happy and to relax and go along for the ride. And you can see that in their relationship, Liam changes in Louis’ presence, he lights up and there is a completely different goofy spontaneous Liam that no one else draws out like Louis does. Similarly, with Zayn, I think that Louis also brings out that side of Zayn that is very often hidden. We see the mischievous, clever and fun Zayn; the one who sneaks out of hotels at night, and makes up words or uses goofy voices and accents. With Niall, you can see that Niall idolizes Louis in a lot of ways and I think that there were times in the few first months were he felt excluded from a few of the boys and you can see the change in the other’s attitudes towards Niall when Louis’ attention was on him, they all of a sudden became to give that same attention towards him. With Harry, I think Louis had the biggest affect. I think Harry had trouble connecting with all the other boys at first. I think if it hadn’t been for Louis then Harry wouldn’t have gotten close with Zayn or Niall. Louis and Harrys’ relationship made Harry happy to be in the group and it brought out the personality traits in all the others that Harry could then begin to bond with. Louis unites them. From the beginning of X-factor they made it out that they “instantly clicked” but the more you investigate the more you find out that in a lot of ways that wasn’t exactly true, and it was through Louis’ immediately open attitude and free spirit that helped to form the relationships that we see now. Zayn talks about feeling like he was excluded at the beginning in Dare To Dream, and in a Twitcam you can see Zayn and Harry arguing. They’ve both mentioned that it was Louis opening up on at Harrys’ bungalow that brought them all together. The same with Niall, at the very beginning there were instances were he seemed to bond the least, and it was Louis’ including him in the jokes that he grew into his skin and everyone could see that personality that you can’t help but love. Even now, whomever Louis’ attention is on in the band that person is lit up and laughing and looking perfectly happy. He has this effect on people, this contagious enthusiasm for life and to embrace everything with full force. He is very hands-on in his affections, putting his head on shoulders, holding hands, leaning on people and the others respond to it, adopting that sort of warmth in how they interact with him. He’s the one protecting them too. He not only defends the boys, but he’s defended US as well. If there are attacks on his family then he is there defending them (Ie. when people said something rude about his mom). He doesn’t take crap from fans. A lot of the boys sugarcoat it with us. If fans do something beyond what is acceptable they often pretend like it’s all right, but Louis doesn’t. In a lot of ways it’s refreshing, he doesn’t worry about “keeping fans’, he’s not interested in what the appropriate media response it; he tells people they are inappropriate, they have gone too far, they are out of line.

Of all the boys in interviews, the two who answer the most questions have a tendency to be Liam and Louis. Liam is very genuine, but a lot of times his answers seem almost scripted. He answers questions in a very pattern like formula, repeating that they love fans, they want to see fans, and they appreciate all the support and things like that. Louis, on the other hand is usually the one in the band who takes on the difficult questions and the one’s that are a big too personal or intrusive. For example, when an Interviewer made a remark about that interview where management had called ahead to tell him what he could not ask, Louis was the one who stopped joking and made sure to mention that it was because they had heard the fans saying they wanted different questions. He very often takes charge in interviews, addressing all the topics that critic the band, or are discussing their motivations behind things, or what fans think of certain actions they’ve done. Similarly he is the only one who address the “Larry Stylinson” issue, and regardless of your standpoint on the situation, he has stepped up and taken the sole responsibility of dealing with that issue. Harry has never once had to say anything about it, and he is as much involved as Louis is.

I think in a lot of ways Louis is the most insecure of all the boys. And I remember I said that about Harry also, but Louis a different kind of insecure. Harry doesn’t give a shit about what people think of him, instead he is the insecure where he worries that people will leave, that no one quite loves him enough or he could push people away. Louis, on the other hand, seems to be insecure about being good enough. He doesn’t think he’s hot, he doesn’t think his voice is good enough, and worries a lot about what people think of him. When he hosted the radio interview with Greg James, and he was playing the piano he wouldn’t even sing the lyrics along to the song or sing with that girl who called in. That is symptomatic of someone who isn’t confident enough to feel that his voice is worth hearing without being accompanied by the other boys. He has repeatedly commented on how, when auditioning for x-factor he was so nervous and knew he wasn’t good enough, and wanted to audition as a band but couldn’t find other members etc. Once again illustrating that doesn’t have a confidence in his abilities. Another instance was before the charity soccer game when he talks about how all these people had come out to see him, and what if he played awfully? For us, we see this boy who has this wonderfully unique voice, and who is very witty, and who is impressively athletic and yet there is a strong sense that Louis does not see any of these things when he looks at himself. When people compliment him, especially in front of crowds he resorts to that self-conscious giggly smile as though he almost can’t belief that anyone is praising him. In a lot of ways I think this is why he and Harry clicked, they complement each other. Harry doesn’t dwell on people’s impressions and he would help Louis to get over that vulnerability of self-image and self-worth. And in return Louis’ personality is “handsy” and affectionate, and that is exactly what Harry needs to feel close and wanted. No matter what your opinion on their relationship, the fact that they are close cannot be overlooked and friendships are very useful in seeing aspects of someone’s personality. With Harry, Louis is particularly protective. He is always ensuring that Harry is okay interviews, telling him what he is saying is okay and they very often communicate through simple glances so you can tell they are very in tune with each other. You see a lot of aspects of Louis in how he treats Harry. In the documentary especially you see the urge he feels to shelter him, when he was upset over the Red or Black performance.

In a lot of ways I don’t think that, of all the boys, Louis knew the least what he was getting himself into. I think, like a lot of things in his life, the decision to try out for x-factor was a rather spontaneous choice. Yes, he did say he had thought about it for a few months but his first singing interest developed when he did Grease in the school play. When you compare that to Liam who tried out multiple times and had been doing singing “gigs” for years or Harry who had his own band for years and had performed a lot, then Louis’ interest seemed almost to be a “phase” or an interest which he was “trying out.” He doesn’t plan, he throws himself into situations with the hope that things go well and he has fun. In this instance, to then find himself in this situation where he is one of the most famous people on the planet right now, with all the perks, but also all of the downsides of being in the spotlight he is the least ready to cope. Combine that with his insecurities and the fact that he is the most likely to seem overstressed, cranky or least able to put up with screaming, rude and (let’s be honest) annoying fans makes sense. In a lot of ways Louis didn’t “sign up” for this, and I think it has taken the biggest toll on him of all the boys. At the same time Louis is very good to the fans. In the interview in Australia he is the one to suggest that the crying girl come down to get “a cuddle”. I think there is also this idea that Louis never goes out to greet fans, and yet I watch countless videos of him outside the studio signing things for people. Not only that, but think of how many concerts he has attempted to jump past, run past, jump over, trick security into running out into the crowd. He doesn’t sugarcoat the way he deals with fans, but I’ve seen him one on one with fans, and he’s engaged, and caring and so overly thankful about everything and it’s not fake. You can see the genuine goodness in his treatment towards them. If you need an example of his kindness, all you need to do is remember his tweet to that poor girl who died. He is also always the one dedicating every award “to the fans, for the fans.” It’s never about them, always about us.

In a lot of ways the fact that he was the least prepared for the fame, it means the most to him. He wasn’t the popular kid in school, he wasn’t like Harry who seems able to charm everyone he so much as smiles at or Niall who has more friends then we can count because his personality is just like that. Even Liam and Zayn seem to have had their lives together, they had their best friend and they had their careers figured out. While Louis, he seemed to be a bit lost. He didn’t really have a plan for the future, he had Stan and the odd girlfriend but I think a lot of his life was uncertain and he had no real ambitions, because frankly, I don’t think he himself thought he could achieve anything worthwhile. It’s tying back to those vulnerabilities. This whole experience is obviously more than any of them could have dreamed, but for Louis I think this is more than he ever could have dreamed about dreaming about. There are so many moments where he’s been on stage just shaking his head in absolute awe that this is his life and that this is happening to him. You can hear it in his voice as well, there is so much emotion in his tone, and it’s seeping out in every breath and note: the disbelief, the joy, and the wonder. I can remember him talking about his mom having cut out every magazine or newspaper article he’s ever been and keeping them, and of course all the mother’s are over the moon with pride, I think Jay knows what this means for him, what this has done for his confidence, and what it’s meant to have this change in his life. Of all the boys, the one who needed this the most was Louis, even if he didn’t know he needed it.

At the end of the day one of the most amazing qualities about Louis, is that he seems to be whatever personality others need. When those around him need the fun loving Louis then he’s there to brighten the mood and keep them happy. When they need the brave Louis he’s there, battling rumors and protecting them. If the Louis who can offer warm arms to cuddle in and talk out problems or discuss missing home or love lives then he is that Louis. No matter what, he molds himself in the Louis that is required; and in that way he is one of the most selfless individuals I can think of.
