The Crown's portrayal of Philip is so irritating but I'm even more annoyed by their portrayal of his family. Were they good parents? Absolutely not, but they were interesting, complex people and it seems like such a missed opportunity to teach the world about some relatively unknown history. Like you, this show has gone a bit too far for me but it's too beautiful and as a royal fan I just can't stop watching.

Yes, I’ve been reading more about how the situation with them has been misrepresented. I would have loved more about Philip’s earlier childhood instead of the fake angst over him blaming himself for Cecile’s death and his father blaming him too. I didn’t think was true when I watched it but just confirmed that it’s entirely fictional. Not like the situation isn’t tragic enough already. 

I will ofc still watch it too, but I can’t really say I like it or am a fan at this point. It is gorgeous. I wish we could get a big budget show like this for a more accurate and authentic show about the Windsor dynasty. I thought maybe The Crown could be that, but it’s not.

I had been optimistic that maybe next season, during the period where Alice actually lived in Buckingham Palace, we might be able to see more flashbacks about the family’s relationships with the early 20th century royals, or the drama in Greece during the Turkish Wars or WWII, but it seems they have chosen to write made-up drama instead of using the perfectly dramatic real history. Honestly one of my favorite things about this history is how ‘soap opera’ it is, so I just can’t comprehend why they feel the need to change things so much.

Pride without Conflict

For a while I wondered if I belonged there. I stood on the sidewalk in my flowery skirt, confident in my gender I was assigned at birth and confident in my love for the man who slept across the Atlantic Ocean. I cheered for my trans brothers and sisters and those who face daily persecution because they don’t match society’s expectations--but who was I but a spectator?

For a while all I could feel was my privilege. How lucky I am to be such a palatable type of gay. That I can go home for the holidays and put on a well-fitting mask, careful not to post the pictures from today on Facebook where the less tolerant members of my family lurk. 

But then I remembered the two Prides I skipped, afraid that wanting to embrace this part of myself would alienate the man I want to share the rest of my life with. I remembered why I couldn’t post these pictures on Facebook. I remembered the nights I cried myself to sleep because I felt so ashamed of the part of me that gazed too long at the actress’s chest on a movie date with my boyfriend. I remembered the dozens of times I lied, because being a liar was better than being shamed.

Then I started dancing--because this year I am happier with myself than I’ve ever been. My attractions are not immoral. My sexuality is fulfilled. I can be completely happy--because I love someone who understands me, and who helps me to better understand myself. 

He made it so clear: why would I be more forgiving with strangers than myself? Does bisexuality not mean you can see the beauty in every person? Would I say my mom loves my dad less because of her adoration of Denzel Washington? Of course I don’t love John less because I see Gal Gadot’s alluring strength or ship Calzona. I am not unfaithful and I am not ashamed. I am PROUD to see the beauty in any person and I will dance the night away.

I was giving some lectures in Germany about the death penalty. It was fascinating because one of the scholars stood up after the presentation and said, “Well you know it’s deeply troubling to hear what you’re talking about.” He said, “We don’t have the death penalty in Germany. And of course, we can never have the death penalty in Germany.” And the room got very quiet, and this woman said, “There’s no way, with our history, we could ever engage in the systematic killing of human beings. It would be unconscionable for us to, in an intentional and deliberate way, set about executing people.” And I thought about that. What would it feel like to be living in a world where the nation state of Germany was executing people, especially if they were disproportionately Jewish? I couldn’t bear it. It would be unconscionable. And yet, in this country, in the states of the Old South, we execute people – where you’re 11 times more likely to get the death penalty if the victim is white than if the victim is black, 22 times more likely to get it if the defendant is black and the victim is white – in the very states where there are buried in the ground the bodies of people who were lynched. And yet, there is this disconnect.
