On October 23, 1998, James Charles Kopp killed a abortion doctor in a rifle attack. Armed with an SKS rifle, Kopp took cover in a wooded area, near the abortion doctor’s house.

He waited for the abortionist to return home from synagogue with his family on Friday night. At approximately 10pm, Kopp fatally shot Dr. Barnett Slepian in the back, through the abortionists kitchen window.

With the help of his contacts within the American anti-abortion movement, Kopp evaded the police until March 2001 by fleeing to Mexico, then to France, then to Ireland. Kopp was eventually placed on the FBI’s 10 most wanted list. Kopp is also suspected of killing 4 other abortion doctors that were killed in similar shooting attacks through their windows. at trial his lawyer said, "We'll defend one shooting at a time."
