It is such a masterpiece. It follows a girl who has just moved to LA in hopes of being a modeling star. The symbolism is crazy and so is the coloring of everything. It is so so beautiful.

It is directed by Nicolas Winding Refn and stars Elle Fanning, Abbey Lee, and Keanu Reeves.

Climax (2018)

This movie is my dream and nightmare.

I watched it because I mean it sounds amazing.

Climax follows a dance studio’s experience in an abandoned school while partying and dancing. Things go to hell when the sangria is spiked with LSD. The title scene doesn’t even start until about halfway in and we see it from the outside- no idea what they’re seeing. It is in French.

It’s directed by Gaspar Noé and stars Sofia Boutella, Romain Guillermo,  Souheila Yacoub, Kiddy Smile, and Claude-Emmanuelle Gajan-Maull.

It won 5 awards and had an additional 6 nominations.

Jennifer’s Body (2009)

One of the better teen movies.

I watched this because of all the edits I’d seen of it on Instagram.

Jennifer’s Body follows Jennifer Check who has gained some weird powers and a thirst for human blood. Her best friend, Needy, tries to navigate high school, her cannibalistic best friend, and her two love interests, one of which is Check.

Jennifer’s Body is directed by Karyn Kusama and stars Megan Fox, Adam Brody, and Amanda Seyfried.

It received 3 awards and 4 additional nominations.

Midsommar (2019)

I think everybody knows how much I love A24 and Aster...

I watched this movie because it combined some of my favorite things: paganism, Will Poulter, Ari Aster, A24, and drugs.

This movie follows barely surviving couple Dani and Christian as they visit their friend Pelle’s home country for their annual midsummer festival. The cinematography, as normal with Aster, is beautiful, as is the soundtrack. The movie also has some amazing psychedelic scenes. Like Hereditary, Midsommar is deeply disturbing.

Midsommar is directed by one of my favorites, Ari Aster, and stars Florence Pugh, Jack Reynor, Vilhelm Blomgren, William Jackson Harper, and Will Poulter.

Midsommar was snubbed with only 17 wins and 42 nominations.

American Pastoral (2016)

This movie was a political masterpiece.

Did I watch this just because of the cast? Maybe. Do I regret it? No.

American Pastoral follows Mary, daughter of a Pagent Queen and Football Star. She’s growing up during the Vietnam War and is very much against it. She joins a violent anti-war group that throws her family and neighborhood into chaos.

This movie is directed by Ewan McGregor who also stars in it, alongside Jennifer Connelly, Dakota Fanning, and Uzo Aduba.

American Pastoral received one award and two additional nominations.

Heathers (1989)

One of my favorites!

I watched this movie while skipping school in 7th grade and fell in love with it.

It follows high-schooler Veronica Sawyer and her newfound relationship with her understood peer, JD. The two exchange dark and twisted ideas, and eventually, things hit a breaking point.

Heathers is directed by Michael Lehmann and stars Winona Ryder, Christian Slater, Shannon Doherty, Lisanne Falk, and Kim Walker.

It received 3 awards and got an additional 11 nominations.

Cube (1997)

I loved this movie!

I watched this one when I first got into horror.

It is Saw-esque, but came before Saw. Cube follows 6 strangers who wake up in a giant contraption with no memory and no seeming way out. Getting to know the characters is really interesting as is figuring out how their chamber of captivity works.

Cube’s directed by Vincenzo Natali and stars Nicole de Boer, Nicky Guadagni, and David Hewlett.

Cube won more things that it did not with 13 wins to 7 nominations.

Tallulah (2016)

Jesus Christ this movie slaughtered my heart.

I’ve been urging to watch it since it came out and am glad I finally did.

Tallulah follows a young, poor, woman named Tallulah who has to deal with the outcome of stealing a baby from a drunken woman. This movie crushed me in an amazing way.

The movie is directed by Sian Heder and stars Ellen Page, Alison Janney, Evan Jonigkeit, and Tammy Blanchard. It also features Uzo Aduba. 

It was nominated for the Sundance Grand Jury Prize.

It’s a Netflix Original but is probably also available on 123movies.

The Babadook (2014)

One of the first horror movies I saw!

I watched this because I’d heard all about it.

A mom and her kid get increasingly paranoid about a creature called ‘The Babadook.’ This movie is so amazing and has a much deeper meaning. It’s also lovely with it’s muted color palette. 

The Babadook is directed by Jennifer Kent and stars Essie Davis and Noah Wiseman.

It received 63 nominations and 56 additional wins.

Terrifier (2016)

Damn this movie is gooood.

I watched this one with my friend- we’ve seen every horror movie on Netflix.

It’s about two girls on Halloween who get tangled up with a clown. It’s one of the few actually thrilling horror movies.

Terrifier is directed by Damien Leone and stars Jenne Kanell, Samantha Scaffidi, and David Howard Thorton.

Terrifier had 1 win and 5 nominations.

This movie was so beautifully depressing. Made my mom cry.

I watched this movie in the theatres with my mother and sister.

It’s about a girl growing up in poverty in Uganda who’s life forever changes when she is introduced to chess. It’s based on a true story.

Queen of Katwe is directed by Mira Nair. It stars Lupita Nyong’o, Madina Nawlago, David Oyelowo, and Martin Kabranza. 

Queen of Katwe had 2 wins and 20 nominations.

It’s available to watch on Disney+ and probably 123movies.

My Girl (1991)

This movie broke my heart-

I watched this one at my friend's birthday party in 6th grade. 

It’s about an 11-year-old navigating pre-teen life in the 90s.

My Girl is directed by Howard Zieff and stars Macauly Caulkin, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Anna Chulumsky. 

It won 2 awards including one from MTV and got 5 additional nominations.

Me and Earl and the Dying Girl (2015)

This movie is the best cancer movies and it is not like any other one I’ve ever seen. (

I watched it because I was on a plane and it was one of the movies on there.

This movie follows Greg, who’s mom pressures him to reconnect with his Kindergarten classmate Rachel after discovering she has cancer. The movie is amazing and beautiful, it’s a perfect mix of comedy, drama, and fake romance. This movie actually made me read the book- it was that good (you should read it too the author writes beautifully). It also has a hilarious weed scene.

Me and Earl is directed by Alfonso Gomez-Rejon. The author of the book, Jesse Andrews, also wrote the screenplay. It stars Thomas Mann, RJ Cyler, Olivia Cooke, Nick Offerman, Molly Shannon, and Connie Briton.

It had 17 wins and 29 nominations.
