This scene is one of X-2’s gems if not for this part alone. It’s pretty frustrating that no one really asked about Tidus before or even after this exchange. I absolutely love knowing that there are apparently rumors going around about Tidus and his history. Surely he’s at Legendary Guardian status by now, and Maechen confirming that Tidus became the gossip of the town is a real treat. That’s just one reason why I love this scene. I love the blitzball tournament reference and how he shares what people thought of Tidus at that time; I love that he mentions speaking to him on ‘a number of occasions’; I love the mention of ‘otherworld’. Maechen is such a great character who I think embodies the lore in X and X-2. Ugh, FFX-2 is so great, you guys. Chapter 5 is filled with so much emotion and X references. This game is so slept on tbh.

There’s so much more to life than finding someone who will want you, or being sad over someone who doesn’t. There’s a lot of wonderful time to be spent discovering yourself without hoping someone will fall in love with you along the way, and it doesn’t need to be painful or empty. You need to fill yourself up with love. Not anyone else. Become a whole being on your own. Go on adventures, fall asleep in the woods with friends, wander around the city at night, sit in a coffee shop on your own, write on bathroom stalls, leave notes in library books, dress up for yourself, give to others, smile a lot. Do all things with love, but don’t romanticize life like you can’t survive without it. Live for yourself and be happy on your own. It isn’t any less beautiful, I promise.
