Though many imagine him a golem, forged in permafrost, wrapped in iron and just as hospitable as both, there is a knack to cracking Tseng’s exterior. Sometimes, it is a pinpoint strike in the right spot and very very few know where to look. Which is just the way he likes it. However, sometimes–rarely–a sledge hammer comes along.

Tilly is a sledge hammer.

And Tseng cracks. With a huff that is almost laughter and a split of lips that flashes teeth ( but not fangs, a point worthy of note ). Leather clad hands slip from the pockets of his trousers and Tseng can only surmise the addition of his trench coat–long, black. Cool? Perhaps…–is the reason for Tilly’s onslaught.

It’s just a coat, he wants to say. It is the coat, right? Tseng licks his lips and shelves that particular train of thought for another day, while deft fingers fasten a few buttons and tie the belt about his waist.

“I’m sure it’s a clause in my contract. Somewhere.”

Is it wrong that she kind of likes getting a reaction out of him? Tilly had always been good at getting reactions from people but it hadn’t always been a good thing. People thought she was weird. Strange. Reality was Tilly was just not adverse to saying the quiet part out loud. 

A smirk appears on her face as she glances at him before trying to maintain some nonchalance about the whole situation.  

She’s not quite sure if she nails it. 

There was something about a man in a good coat though - not that she would tell him that part. It spoke of confidence and while she liked confidence in men there was something that she liked more - competence. There was nothing more attractive in a man than competence. 

Though, maybe that was a damning indictment on society? 

“I speak only the truth.”

i woke up this morning and i just hated everything. ( for Tilly )

She does the one thing she can think of. Pours him another coffee. “It’s okay, coffee makes that feel better.” She quips before pouring herself one and leaning against the counter. For a moment she tries to work out if he is hangry or not but he didn’t strike her as that kind of person. 

“Are we talking physically hate everything or existentially?” There was a difference and Tilly felt the first one often. Only to realise it was caffeine withdrawal. She was at her very heart a caffeine addict. The world was intolerable without it. Deeply intolerable. 

Tilly lets the silence hang for a moment before taking a sip of her coffee and makes him an offer. “Do you want to vent and I can listen or do you want to talk about it and I offer advice that may or may not be what you want to hear?” Well. It was about all she could offer him right now, she couldn’t change the world for him - if she could she might just do so - and she couldn’t change other people. So this was what she was left with.

She is quiet, not because she is lost in thought but because she is simply trying to give his statement the space that it deserves. Feng Wu knows in some way, that those words would not have come out of him if he did not believe it, and that…well…that hurts a little. 

It was not like she ever expected to care about him, they had been forced together by forces greater than themselves…and then she had just decided that if they were going to be stuck together she would attempt to make the most of it. Life was already crap enough without having to make it more difficult, and they had the same goals in some ways. Sure, they were very different people from very different worlds but they had things in common, and surprisingly, he had never treated her badly. 

It had taken a while, but she had come to realise she had been far luckier than most of the woman from her kingdom. Fate was funny and fickle, wasn’t it?

Finally she moves, a slow blink, and a gentle shake of her head as she reaches for his hand and wraps hers around his.

“Not everything.” She means it. Utterly serious for once, there’s no joke, no little snippy comment, no sarcasm and no deadpan. Just honesty. “Not this.”
