I'm not normal about stories where you can tell exactly what the author was writing about and why. Mary Shelley writing Frankenstein after her first daughter died. Charlotte Perkins Gilman writing The Yellow Wallpaper after barely escaping confinement for hysteria. Tolkien writing The Lord of the Rings after fighting in World War I (though he denies this connection). Stories where you pour your soul onto print knowing that everyone is going to know. do you understand

"oh look, she's back with another wuthering heights post" damn right. today we're addressing one of the common arguments for heathcliff being white that I've seen - heathcliff being as 'pale as the wall' in one (1) scene where he's suffering acute distress.

"but even so, a person of color wouldn't be able to get that white-" let me tell you a fun story.

when I was twelve years old, I caught the flu. I had gone to bed thinking it was just a particular nasty cold, but when I woke up dizzy and in pain and sweating, I began to suspect that was not the case.

at that point, I had spent my entire life on the equator. I was on the swim team, and our pool was unshaded, so I was spending 2 and a half hours every single day just swimming laps in direct sunlight. my issues with texture rendered me and sunscreen incompatible. I was quite close in color to several of my brown friends. my melanin was working overtime.

at 3 in the morning, I stumbled into the bathroom, flicking on the lights so I didn't trip on something and die. I almost died anyways when I caught sight of my reflection in the mirror. it was as if someone had used a color picker on an A4 sheet of printer paper and filled in my face. I was landlord white. a white supremacist would have made me, an asian, the new face of whiteness.

I was tired and dizzy, and now I was scared, because I was immediately certain that the ghost from The Ring had given up on televisions and taken instead to haunting the mirrors of twelve year old girls, and I was going to have to battle her to get to the toilet so I could throw up.

literally the day before, I had been laughing with an indian friend about how we were the same skin color.

all this to say, people of color can still turn pale when sick/injured/frightened/otherwise in massive distress.

i'm always mad that every adaptation of wuthering heights leaves the second generation out. where is the TRUE romantic icon, hareton earnshaw, who learns to read so he can improve himself for the girl he loves and lets her pull his hair and begs for kisses. where is he

Woke: the book is about trauma and abuse, it's not a love story

Bespoke: while a romance novel needs a happy ending to meet the definition of a romance novel, a love story doesn't have to be healthy or end happily to be a love story, so long as the love is sincere.

Bespoker: there is a romantic hero in Wuthering Heights and it's Hareton Earnshaw.

how are you guys getting so distracted by jacob elordi's fingers that you slide into passive racism by ignoring the obvious anti-intellectualist dialogue surrounding the new wuthering heights movie ("it's not that deep" "it's just a fantasy") and refusing to critically engage with fennell's choices to take the story of a racialized young man perpetuating a cycle of trauma and abuse first imposed on him by his white adoptive family because of his race and class, and to instead turn it into a Hot Sexy Film With Emerald's Self-Insert.

how are you justifying turning the cruel, casually racist, status-quo upholding white man edgar linton into a submissive person of color who also manages to somehow lord his status over the Poor White Boy. oh yeah how about fennell leaving out the fact that heathcliff's abuse is in many ways directly tied to his race. what about her deciding to make nelly an asian person and give her a much more active role in preventing cathy and heathcliff together, thus making both 'villains' of the movie people of color. do you guys really think it means nothing that fennell did all that.

enjoy the movie for the sex, do whatever you like. but like. guys please you can enjoy the aesthetics and sexuality of the film while also thinking a little bit about why emerald fennell changed the things that she did and how that correlates to our greater sociocultural climate. come on
