Have confidence in who you are and don’t be afraid to go for what you really want in life.
‘ no, — his skin looked really nice. i wanted to try it on. ‘
‘ oh my ---- i -- okay. i think that’s enough community service for the day. ‘
“Fucking bowl cuts! Oh my God, that has to be high on the list of abusive shit parents do to their children. That is so damn cruel. How are you still alive? How the hell did you make it this far in life? Wow… I thought I had it bad!”
“I honestly don’t know. I beat the odds. Not to mention, kids were cruel at that age, okay? People say middle school is rough.. Elementary and middle school were the worst. Even my teachers started calling me Everett, I’m pretty sure they forgot I was a girl altogether.”
Though he was reticent and distant — keeping his personal life personal, Evie was always there for him. Rather than interrogating him over his bad mood, she’d sit there in silence with him, reminding him that everything would be okay even if he didn’t believe it. She deserved more, he knew that. He couldn’t give her his all and she needed someone who could, but for whatever reason ( and he was thankful for it ), she always came back to him. Sure, maybe she had moved on temporarily, but he was the one she sought solace in when she had too much to drink — no matter how far they were. “Well it was the cutest thing ever!” He laughed, but that quickly silenced as she moved to straddle him. His hands moved to grip onto her waist, his thumb moving in small circles against her hipbones. “I like forward Evie. She’s the one who told me we were going on a date in high school and she told me she was going to be my girlfriend. She’s bold,” he laughed, his voice soft. “Yes, you!” He grinned, his hands coming to rest against her lower back. “Well, I’m trying not to be handsy right now because it’s all up to you to hit on me.”
The definition of insanity: doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. Maybe what they were doing was crazy. Maybe crashing into each other over and over and expecting it to end in anything other than heartbreak was a worthless hope. Maybe they were destined for hurt and pain and upset because it was all they deserved. But then again, people change. Over years apart, maybe they’d grown fonder. Maybe they’d matured and their relationship had aged like a fine wine. The tragedy was that they both seemed too scared of the fall to take the jump. She smiled at the way her actions so effectively silenced him. She let her hands separate, trailing over and down his shoulders, resting at the front of his chest, toying with buttons she knew she’d pop open only seconds later. It wasn’t often that Evie found the courage to be bold -- in high school, she had a penchant for calling people out and sticking up for herself, but with time, it had faded. Benji was bringing that part of her back little by little. “I had to fight for what was mine,” she smirked, undoing the top three buttons of his shirt, hands sliding over warm skin just under the soft cotton. “I wanted you.. You wanted me,” she leaned in a little closer, still smiling as her lips brushed against his - maybe she wasn’t just talking about high school anymore. “Someone had to do something about it.” She moved one hand down to rest on top of his, holding closely so he was forced to squeeze just a little tighter onto her skin. “I’ll use my imagination,” she joked, but it came out soft and heavy, lips immediately finding his right after.
‘ nothing, it’s just a joke. - alright, just kidding, i have killed a man. ‘
‘ ...in self-defense, right? ‘
❝ i would if hallmark cards weren’t a thing of the past. it’s all about refrigerator magnets now. ❞
“what? no. hallmark cards are timeless. refrigerator magnets are just a fad -- i’m calling it now.”
“I’m getting a degree in Creative Writing. That just screams unemployment. Same, we took a stop and I had to drag myself back inside.
“Creative writing? Oh, wow. No -- I think that sounds wonderful. If you’re passionate about it, that’s all that matters in the end. Money is temporary. Happiness is forever. All that good stuff.”
“Lil’ Sebastian is a Mini Horse, you do-do bird. Not a rapper.”
“A horse?! Why the hell would the mayor give a key to the city to a horse?!”
“—– That’s not what I was trying to.. ” the defense tapers off into disbelieving silence. a flush rising alongside a shake of her head the longer she considers the very likely possibility of having been caught in a less than gracious moment when she’d been leaving. sighing she shrugs half-heartedly ‘’ i just used to love this piece is all. ‘’ hailee admits.
evie often tried her best not to pry -- she of all people knew the value of privacy and the anxiety that came with people who nosed a little too closely. but there was something interesting about this girl -- something that left her a slave to her impulses. “you used to love it?” she questioned before she could stop herself. “what made you stop? or what did you love about it?”
Benji feared what would come the next day — would things work out or would they revert back to their previous behavior of avoiding one another at all costs? They wouldn’t be in Brighton for long…what would happen after that? All of these questions and fears and uncertainties riddled his mind, but right here, right now, he was sure this is where they were destined to be. He bit down on his bottom lip to stifle his smile as she leaned towards him, quirking a brow at her flirting. “In bed?” He questioned, a grin finally breaking through. “That was the cutest thing I’ve ever seen in my whole life. You manage to be hot and adorable at the same time and it’s very confusing,” he laughed. Benji’s laughter became louder as she gripped onto his arm, shaking his head softly. “I blame you! You’re the one who tempted me, and y’know, I can’t keep my hands off of you but you kept tempting me,” he shrugged, nudging her playfully.
Evie had spent most of her life in a constant state of discomfort. Her home was tense. She went to school and spent the day stressing over her grades and then she came back home and spent her nights on edge - desperate to avoid any and all conversation with her father. Benji was the first person to show her what home could feel like. She had nestled into his bones, so eager to keep that feeling alive for as long as she could. Her smile broke free of her attempts to constrain it - eyes narrowing playfully as he responded. “It’s not supposed to be adorable!” she laughed, face falling into his chest, hair falling over blushed cheeks. “I'm not good at flirting.” She lifted her head, a momentary smirk flashing before she shifted her position, swinging one leg over him and settling down to straddle his lap. Her fingers laced together behind his neck, lazily combing through the hair at the nape of his neck. “That’s the best I can do. The rest is just forward and not coy at all.” Her eyes widened, smiling incredulously in his direction. “Me!?” She feigned offense. “You can’t blame me. You’re ridiculously sexy when you get handsy.”
