Preparing for Cannes and membership

EWA network held its bureau meeting in Madrid on Sunday 28 April with the Spanish directors: Isabel de Ocampo (Executive President - director of "Evelyn") and Paula Ortiz (Vice-President - director of "De tu ventana a la mia").

Points covered included EWA's fundraising strategy, communication policy, upcoming events, membership conditions and ideas for training initiatives, data monitoring and research. With the Spanish company, Roline, the website and members' login sections are currently being prepared and we can't wait to share this new space with you mid-May: http://www.ewawomen.com.

If anybody is interested in attending our networking events during Cannes film festival (Sunday 5-7pm in the market at SEE on 19 May) and Tuesday 21 May (9.30-11.30 - location to be confirmed) please drop us a line at [email protected] and we'd be delighted to send on details.

Upcoming Cannes highlights include meeting some wonderful major directors (more details to follow) and of course meeting potential new members, who'd like to have a pan-European network they can sign up to.

EWA network on the move

The past few weeks have been a really intensive time for EWA network - sorry for no updates but we've been on the move to bring the network to life...

Expanding team

In addition to our social networker and wonderful assistant co-ordinator, Andrew Davidson (London based), three new volunteers have joined the network: Aurélie Dutrey from Toulouse has come on board as a fundraiser, Sybille Zaktreger (Strasbourg) is helping with the accounts and Alexia Muinos from CIMA Barcelona and a film director, is our Artistic Director and Special Consultant on IT issues. We have other supporters throughout Europe and we are always really grateful for your help. Thank you.

Communication matters

The new website and members' login sections are starting to take shape and members will be able to officially sign up from mid-May onwards... Keep on following us to find out more. We are also planning a newsletter and an exciting campaign in May... more to come!

In conjunction with the EWA campaign we will be launching a crowd-funding initiative and in the meantime we'd like to thank Nina Refseth and Elin Erichsen at the Norwegian Film Institute and Doreen Boonekamp, Dorien van der Pas and Marg Brouwers at the Netherlands Film Fund for their generous support.

Events

Cannes: We are organising a networking event during the Cannes film festival: 19 May in conjunction with the Croatian Film Fund (another big thanks)... and are currently looking for drinks sponsors for this event... let us know.

Istanbul: EWA is constantly building new bridges and one important one is to our fantastic female directors and producers in Turkey, who invited EWA network to attend Meetings on the Bridge during the Istanbul Film Festival. The wealth of talented female directors and producers in Turkey is impressive, with female directors accounting for 5 out of the 12 selected for the film project development workshop. These included: Nefin Dinc "Memoirs of Antoine Köpe", which won the Binger Film Lab prize, Ezgi Kaplan's project "Flag", Esra Saydam and Nisan Dag's project "A sea apart" and Ilksen Basarir's project "Icarus".

The Head of Meetings on the Bridge is Gülin Ustün and Azize Tan, another extremely talented woman, is the Director of the Istanbul Film Festival. As EWA network considers the best way to support women in the industry the know-how of the successful producer Zeynep Özbatur will also be of crucial importance... She has been supporting the industry through training of young producers every Saturday for a number of years and is highly respected in the industry. Stay tuned for more news on upcoming events in Turkey... plus an extended article on Turkish female directors, producers and audiovisual sector professionals... to be included in the first edition of the newsletter.

Barcelona: CIMA Barcelona and Francine Hetherington Raveney had an interesting and intensive brainstorming meeting at SGAE on Passeig de Colon earlier this week and we're looking forward to organising events out of Barcelona.

Spotlight: Amira Kheir

Bird's Eye View Film Festival has a special program this year called Sound & Silents. The festival has gained two restorations of classic films from the silent era and is presenting them in their program. What is so special about the program is that each film is paired with an original live score. Each film is scored by an Arab female musician, highlighting the power of the festival to draw together Arab women in celebration of culture and identity, and creating a space in which contemporary Arab women are the leaders of a powerful discourse on history and cultural identity through the arts.

Amira Kheir is a Sudanese-Italian singer and musician who derives her blended and soulful sound from her own cultural identity and from the many histories she engages musically. From her website:

"As a young singer, musician and composer now residing in London, Amira draws from her own multicultural background to create music that explores themes of home, belonging and transcendental spirituality. Her music is evocative of Northern Sudan’s desert landscape and celebrative of its ancient culture and multitude realities, but rooted in a desire to break all the boundaries used to keep people divided. It is anchored in a compelling call to come together irrespectively of our backgrounds to share our single human journey. Within Amira’s music is a universal message of peace, love and unity and global call to rise up and confront oppression, corruption and injustice. This young artist is rapidly becoming one of the new voices in the African renaissance."

The Sound & Silents program ends tomorrow night with a screening of The Adventures of Prince Achmed, live score arranged and performed by rising composer Bushra El-Turk.

Women in the World Summit, NYC

There's a powerful event taking place this week in New York City that all of our friends and supporters stateside should be sure to check out.

April 4th and 5th in the David H. Koch Theatre, Newsweek and the Daily Beast will be presenting the Women in the World Summit, a series of talks and discussions featuring some of the biggest names in women's rights advocacy from around the world. This includes both men and women, from celebrities and tv personalities to active international political and social advocates.

EWA is in full support of events that bring the spotlight to the crucial work being done by women's rights advocates. Make sure you check out the event if you're in New York. We'll keep you updated if any of their media becomes available to the public!

Bird's Eye View Film Festival

We are really excited by the work of the Bird's Eye View (BEV) Film Festival, which begins in London this Wednesday, April 3. EWA was lucky enough to sit down with the festival's creative director Kate Gerova last week. We are so impressed by our peers internationally, who work tirelessly to empower female voices in film. Read the BEV mission statement, taken from their webpage:

"Our Mission is to raise public awareness of the lack of women filmmakers and to challenge the industry to change current statistics by positively celebrating the diverse talents of women filmmakers from around the world, and inspiring, encouraging and equipping the next generation of women filmmakers to break new ground"

This year's line-up has a special focus on the films of Arab women. The line-up is a stunning round up of the work of women who are representing different regions of the Arab world. These films have lit the screens of festivals internationally, both large and small, for the last two years. At a time when so many Arab women are fighting to make their voices heard in their communities, these women are speaking loudly to the entire world, forever changing the discourse on Arab women's identities.

We hope you're lucky enough to be in London for the festival, and that you too can catch some of these treasures of contemporary international women's cinema.

- meetings with Dr Dorota Ostrowska and Dr Wendy Earle, from Birkbeck, University of London to see if we can try to organise a pan-European research project on women and the film sector;

- A breakfast rendezvous with Emily Mann from Skillset, to discuss joint projects and sharing of know-how;

- And a scintillating meeting with Stockholm International Film Festival to talk about how EWA and the SIFF can work together. More to follow...

All of this partnership development is vital for the success of the EWA network. It's part of our ongoing work to build bridges throughout Europe that will nurture female talent and promote diversity throughout the audiovisual sector.

As always, EWA is working closely with its founders, CIMA in Spain, and MICA, which covers South America, to ensure that female filmmakers around the globe get the prominence they deserve!

Women of the World Festival Wrap Up

The Women of the World Festival (WOW) took place this past weekend at the Southbank Centre, and it was a massive success. Festival organizers, including Southbank Centre's artistic director and WOW festival founder Jude Kelly, did an incredible job bringing together panelists from around the world to speak on some of the most challenging and interesting topics that women and feminists alike are facing today. What resonated throughout all of the events was a sense that women's organizations are needed now more than ever, to unite women and feminists in conversation on these issues, and to empower the global discourse on gender equality.

WOW did a great job of documenting the events as well, so if you weren't able to make it, check out their youtube channel for video clips of the festival highlights- there are clips from years past as well, in case you'd like to listen to Eve Ensler's incredible hour-long talk from 2012! The event is an incredible opportunity to hear multiple excellent panelists speak on a wide variety of issues that face the global gender equality movement. International Women's Day

March 8 is International Women's Day. Take time today to appreciate the women in your life, the women in our world, and to increase your own awareness of the many uphill battles that are facing the allies of the gender equality movement. Our strength relies upon a communal sense of accountability, for both problems and solutions!

Isabel Coixet at "la Academia de Cine"

EWA President Isabel Coixet will be the subject of a season at "La Academia de Cine" in Madrid. From the 6th to the 14th of March, La Academia will celebrate a retrospective of Coixet's works, and on a few occasions the director herself will be present for talkbacks.

Films to be shown include "A Los Que Aman", which will open the retrospective; "Cosas Que Nunca Te Dije"; "Mi Vida Sin Mí"; "La Vida Secreta De Las Palabras"; "Elegy"; "Mapa de los Sonidos de Tokio"; and the Goya-winning "Escuchando al Juez Garzón".
