I think part of what makes Katawa Shoujo so good that often gets taken for granted is how much our "blank slate" self insert isn't a blank slate. Hisao has a lot of opinions and takes throughout the story, and in each path you get to see him grow and adapt as a person differently. Its a nice touch that helps us be more invested in the relationships we see unfold. More book-ish than most VNs I guess?
