My project is an evolution in ideas I’ve had in my studio work in my BVA. I’ve been experimenting with adding audio from unscripted skype conversations to footage shot on my i-phone of day-to-day life walking around, and then projecting that onto the mess in my studio. For this video I took more of a planned approach, with the idea of recording a scripted monologue written in a kind of stream of consciousness way, and acting as a loose narrative for the video and audio to revolve around. I recorded the monologue using a compressor microphone in my bedroom on a quiet night. I started to match point of view video shot in Ohakune, Ruapehu and silica rapids of me wondering around to the dialogue. After reviewing this I started to add a sampled drum machine beat, and build up a soundtrack. At this point my I began swapping between video and audio editing, so that sometimes I would be editing the video to match the audio and sometimes audio to match video.  

Using a midi keyboard I started to layer built in software synths as an ominous background texture using a few chords and dis-chords. I then DI’d my guitar and recorded some loosely improvised power chords. I remembered a recording I did a while ago when I was recording guitar in my friends garage and they had an old piano there, and then I used my compressor mic to record that kind of jamming along with the guitar. I did a similar thing with my midi keyboard and the ‘grand piano’ software instrument, layering harmonious but dark chords over the DI’d guitar. I then had the idea of recording the sound of bottle caps dropping on the wooden floor of my bedroom to illustrate (with audio) the narration “whenever I take my jeans off bottle caps fall out..” So I put my compressor mic on the floor resting on a jumper and then dropped a handful of bottle caps. I tried about five times before getting the desired sound, experimenting with gain on the mic, the distance of the drop and the distance of where they landed around the mic. About a meter way from the mic was the best. I put this clip in at the appropriate time, and then decided to fade all the other audio out just for this small moment to emphasise the sound of the bottle caps dropping.  

Deciding how loud I wanted the voice over compared to the soundtrack was difficult and I’m still not 100% sure that I want it to be that loud and non-effected. Towards the end of the soundtrack I started to experiment with the vocal by cutting it up, layering it three times, and then panning one track hard left pitch-shifted down, and one hard right and bit-crushed. I repeated small segments of the last sentence “If this dexy doesn’t make me do my homework, I don’t know what will” bit-crushed and pitch shifted to create a stuttered, fragmented effect. At this point I began mixing audio to match video and also video to match audio. I brought in clips of a simulation of myself in my studio I made in the video game sims 4, as well as video I shot at home in my bedroom on my web cam of me injecting myself. I would like to continue developing this video and audio as an artwork to project onto my studio walls, as the concepts are all things that I am addressing in my art-work. I see this as a step in my development rather than a final product, and I’m not 100% sure where I’ll go from here but I have been enjoying experimenting with audio and video in a non-linear way.

I was going to cut more footage into the video and change the audio completely except for the voice over, but have decided to work on that for my studio work instead. That video will also be installed differently – projected in the context of my studio as part of a bigger installation.

I can’t actually find the video that I want to talk about, or the name of it, but it’s mentioned in this article. I saw the video work when it was showed at artspace on white night. I remember being intrigued by the dramatic imagery and pitch shifted monologue, which inspired me to start working with similar techniques

All Watched Over by Machines of Loving Grace - Episode 1 - Love and Power

I watched this documentary for research around the way the internet influences socialisation and was struck by the soundtrack. The opening sequence of fast pace cuts of found and stock tv and film footage showing “modern technology” synced up to Pizzicato Five’s Baby Love Child matches the title of the documentary perfectly, illustrating humans synthetic love affair with the machine. There’s also a keyboard riff that’s repeated a few times through all three episodes that i’m completely hooked by but can’t find the credit for. It reminds me a little of the Twin Peaks theme songs, with major notes, offset by distant minor ones and loaded with reverb to give subtly slightly eerie effect.

Harmony’s choice of the Britney Spears song ‘Everytime’ in this scene of Spring Breakers is a perfect example of how he re-contextualises seemingly harmless / mainstream pop culture by contrasting it with frightening / violent imagery. He’s also done this in Spring Breakers by casting ex disney stars and hollywood celebrities - Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens and James Franco. I’m enchanted with this juxtaposition, as I feel like it exposes the sinister side of the American mainstream and celebrity culture. Even using Britney Spears’s (who was also a disney star) song Everytime, which in itself does this, the original music video including scenes of suicide. I feel the song illustrates Britneys struggle as a celebrity struggling with mental illness, and her ‘fallen angel’ persona.

Ryan Trecartin edits footage and audio in a similar manner - pitch shifting Six Pence None the Richer’s “kiss me” and also double tracking dialogue and playing with the panning so it creates a sense of displacement that matches the only vaguely tangible discourse and fast paced cuts. At around 2:14 I think that the dialogue begins to delay, echo and pan left to right back and forth at a fast pace, which helps to build tension as the characters get more argumentative. The camera zooms in and out on characters when their voices become more emotive which adds intensity. At 5:30 a jarring bassy synth sound comes in for a bit, it receeds and then a few soft piano notes come in, and echo is added to the dialogue. I would say Trecartins focus is all on dialogue between the charcters, and the audio affects he uses builds intensity around the conversation, in combination with his hectic video editing style.

Richard Linklaters’ movies always make me cringe because they’re so earnestly philosophical and ‘deep’, but also trying to be ‘cool’ and ‘casual’ about it, but I also can’t help but relate to them. When I was making my project 2 I definitely had in mind the way he works with soundtrack and dialogue, using music to almost illustrate or add mood to a stream of conscious thought.

Flying Nun is in partnership with Mike Sniper Corp™. Xpressway has been out of commission for 20+ years. Most labels are only interested in reissuing NZ obscurities from the 80s, or releasing Chills “Live” 15xLP box sets. So where does this all leave the current state of New Zealand music? Well, over the last five years—thanks to labels like Melted Ice Cream, Muzai, Stabbiesetc, Fishrider, and a plethora of self-releases— their scene has reestablished itself, and done so without playing into the easy nostalgia of past glory. So here’s a three volume set that should give you a clear idea of how lively the country is right now. Aside from your occasional Axemen/Mad Scene (Brian Turner is a member! False NZ!)/Futurians/Pumice/Bill Direen track, these comps feature mostly artists who’ve come about in the last half decade.
