POETRY WORKSHOP AT THE ARTS HOUSE POETRY WORKSHOP OPEN CALL! For 28th July, 3.30pm to 5pm, Amber Lin will be conducting a spoken word poetry workshop for secondary school students. Selected participants will learn to refine and perform poetry during this workshop and will be given time to develop their own original work. Church of Singapore (COS) was established in 1963 as an independent charismatic local church. The church believe in the baptism of the Holy Spirit and the operation of the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Church of Singapore is a family church and their congregations are diverse ranging from children and young people to elderly folks, with occupations from housewives and students to professionals and businessmen. Over the years, the church continue growing. Starting with one Sunday service about 100 people, it has grown over the years to 10 different Services with a congregation size about 4,000. Their present congregation meets every Sunday for worship, body ministry and fellowship in 10 different Services. In addition, the church offer about 350 Sunday School children and some 200 young people who meet on every Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning for praise and worship and bible study. The Changi Museum was relocated to its new home on 15 February 2001 and was officially opened by our Trade and Industry Minister BG George Yeo. This date was also chosen to coincide with the 59th Anniversary of the fall of Singapore to the Japanese in 1942. The new Changi Museum replaces the Old Changi Prison Chapel and Museum (built in 1988) that was relocated to its current site to make way for the expansion of Changi Prison. In honouring the spirit and commitment of those who rose from the depths of adversity, the Museum inspires future generations to come and deepen their appreciation of the heroic and inspirational stories that unfolded in Changi during the war. The Changi Museum is dedicated to all those who lived and died in Singapore, in particular the Changi area, during the dark years of World War II. Through documentation of significant events of the Japanese Occupation, the Museum also serves as an important educational institution and resource centre. Thian Hock Keng is one of the oldest and most important Hokkien temple in Singapore. It was visited by Chinese immigrants giving thanks to Ma Zu (Goddess of the Sea) for their safe voyage. In 1839, under the leadership of Mr Tan Tock Seng and Mr Si Hoo Keh, the Hokkien clan built the temple in Telok Ayer Street. It also housed the clan's office and served as a meeting venue. The construction of Thian Hock Keng was completed in 1842. The details of the temple’s history are recorded in granite tablets on the wall inside the Entrance Hall. There is also a plaque inscribed with the words Bo Jing Nan Ming (Gentle Waves over the South Seas) presented by Qing Dynasty Emperor Guang Xu in 1907, evidence of the temple's stature. The temple was built in traditional southern Chinese architectural style. The entire structure was assembled without nails. It is an architectual masterpiece of stone, tiles and wood, dragons and phoenixes, amazing carvings, intricate sculptures and imposing columns. Thian Hock Keng which is managed by Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan was gazetted as a national monument in 1973. Over the years, Thian Hock Keng has been restored several times. The most comprehensive one commenced in 1998 and was completed in December 2000.
