Sleeper Progress
A rarity of traffic on the Wallangarra line is the norm but recently a series of track maintenance trains have operated in the once famous southern main line that once linked the Queensland capital of Brisbane with the southern states and especially Sydney. The Sydney Mail was the name train of the period from 1887 through to 1930 before a the direct line linked the two capitals and the lustre of the Sydney Mail began to dull over time.
Largely out of use since the start of this century, the traffic on the now branch line is mainly passenger tour trains. So the appearance of 2478 leading 1754 on a string of sleeper wagons is a delightful and interesting change.
The train worked from Toowoomba on 22 March 2017 as Train Number 0WS2 before turning the locos at Wallangarra and forming Train Number 06S3 . Slowly departing and heading north from Wallangarra the train unloaded sleepers enroute as far as Fletcher some 25 kilometres back towards the town of Stanthorpe before returning further north as an empty train to Toowoomba.
The train is made from QZSC wagons that carry the sleepers. These wagons and a special fork lift allow the distribution of the of the sleepers at regular and most importantly work ready intervals.

Werris Creek Coal Cross Point - YouTube
Werris Creek is a pivotal cross point for rail operations in New South Wales. Coal traffic dominates this junction station with other bulk freight movements and some daily passenger services, Werris Creek is always interesting. A cross between a Pacific National empty working and an Aurizon loaded train at the platform of the Werris Creek Station makes for a scene of heavy haul operations. Starlight Shed - Dawn Encounter - YouTube
Starlight Shed - Dawn Encounter enters the evocative atmosphere of a steam locomotive depot at night with wisps of steam rising in the cool air and the glow of fireboxes. As dawn reveals a clear day and the first rays of light reflect off the locomotives on shed as the locos are prepared for a days running. Queensland Pioneer Steam Railway staged a "Troop Train" event in August of 2016 and managed to negotiate the release of the iconic World War 2 locomotive, AC 16 221A from Queensland Rail to partner their own PB 15 448 for a day of nostalgia and most importantly double headed running. This production features low light night scenes of crew preparing and maintaining the AC 16 and PB 15 locos as well as scenes of the double heading from the day of the Troop Train festivities. Some cab ride imagery also features in the later half of the production. Hecklington Old World In A New World - YouTube
Hecklington - Old World In A New World captures scenes of hand operated Level Crossing gates. Somewhat of a bygone era in a modern world. Nonetheless the gates are fascinating piece of living history. The task of opening and closing the gates is the responsibility of the Signal Cabin operator located at Hecklington. The village of Hecklington located on the Skegness railway line between Sleaford and Boston hosts hourly passenger services. These services are mostly provided by Class 156 diesel multiple units known as Super Sprinters. Hecklington also boasts the only 8 sail windmill in Great Britain still capable of service. The windmill overlooks the railway line and is omnipresent on the skyline of the village. Produced and Directed by Mike Condon. Copyright Express Train Video - Australia, 2016
Aurizon Coal - 2300 Class Action - YouTube
Coal is the major source of traffic over the main western line from Brisbane west to the Darling Downs. Around 12 return services make the journey to the Port of Brisbane each day. A mine located at Columboola on the Western Darling Downs near the township of Miles normally sees 3 or 4 trains most days. The other major mine at Acland just to the west of Oakey provide the remainder of the services to the export facility at the Port of Brisbane. All of these services are powered by 2300 Class locomotives. The changing image of the locomotives captures the transition from QR National to Aurizon. This presentation has selected scenes from a forth coming Express Train Video - Australia DVD production, Macalister 9829. Produced and directed by Mike Condon. Outback Sojourn - Westlander - YouTube The Westlander servicing the south west region of Queensland has been a fixture of rail operations since its introduction in 1954. At the time it was seen as ultra modern and levels of luxury never before seen on the south western rails of Queensland.
This production features the Westlander in the final days of sleeping car accommodation operations on 3 December 2014. Since 2015, the Westlander operates without sleeping cars for the 17 hour hour journey between Brisbane and Charleville. Shortly after sunrise the Westlander is seen on approach to Yuelba and is followed steadily westward through to Charleville. Produced and directed Mike Condon. Afternoon Ramble - Brown Bomber C17 974 - Theebine - Goomeri - YouTube C17 974, a long standing Queensland Rail heritage steam locomotive provided the power for this trip over the now closed Kingaroy Branch between the junction station of Theebine and the small township of Goomeri. An annual pumpkin festival was the impetus to stage a heritage passenger service.
This production features the well known Dickabram Road Rail bridge across the Mary River as well as great cab scenes on the journey towards Goomeri. Produced and Directed by Mike Condon Copyright Express Train Video - Australia, 2016

Ipswich Driver - YouTube
In 1990, Queensland Rail celebrated 125 years of operations. On the morning of the celebrations, BB18 1/4, 1079 ran light engine from Ipswich Workshops to Mayne Yard to collect a special passenger working. Ipswich Driver, Jim Doyle worked the train in the early part of the day. He is seen in this clip boiling up and liaising with the Guard of the train. The train departs Mayne Yard and runs to Brisbane's Roma Street Station. Of interest is the track gang seen near the western end of Roma Street. Not one of the gang are wearing high visibility clothing and they seen moving off the track as the train approaches. Neither of these features would be a part of the 2015 world of rail operations. Produced and directed by Mike Condon. Copyright, Express Train Video - Australia, 2015.
