one of my strongest anime opinions is that light should have had to kill L with his own two hands. make him confront the reality of what he’s been doing all along. make L’s death more narratively satisfying and less convoluted. i’ve heard there was debate between the author and publisher on if light should get to “win” and i think not being able to kill L with the death note (the thing that makes him a god) and having to get his hands dirty in this very human and intimate way would have been a really interesting compromise

Well, see. This is another example of Ohba and Obata’s failures at writing/drawing. I have an entire thesis’s-worth of thoughts on this that maybe I’ll someday type out if I care enough, but you’re very right to say that this would have been a more compelling writing decision.

In my opinion (informed by English and publishing degrees, as well as just…I dunno, having thoughts) Ohba and Obata missed the mark with L’s death. The timing was offensively wrong, stunting the entire last third of the story. The execution (no pun intended) was handled in a way that eliminated multiple problems without advancing the plot substantially. While “interesting” (on a surface level) insofar as Light successfully manipulated Rem, L’s death was notably not at Light’s hands. And that’s never examined. How does Light feel about beating L only by using someone else’s power? That’s a critical point of growth or introspection that Ohba and Obata never entertain.

The last third of Death Note is full of issues from a writing perspective. And many of them stem from the fact that Ohba and Obata’s grasp of narrative structure is wobbly at best. The story is all over the place. And their misogyny encourages them to seek repetitive solutions to Light’s crises that are all just “Light manipulates [woman] to do his bidding,” the same plot that they rinse and repeat after Rem and Misa (and Naomi, to a lesser extent). It makes for a story with little fluctuation, whose deuteragonist was killed off 2/3rds of the way through but the protagonist isn’t contemplating that in any meaningful way, and which is begging you to care about two new contenders in a very short period of time between said deuteragonist’s death and the end of the story.

It’s a narrative mess. And that’s coming from someone who likes Death Note. Just…jfc it could’ve been better. The musical is shockingly good and fixes so many of these issues.
