Different people respond better to different types of therapy, and most therapist will do multiple types of therapy with their patients.

CBT - Most common type of therapy because it works well for all mental health problems.

ACT - Especially helpful for treating anxiety disorders, depressive disorders, OCD, psychosis and substance abuse.

DBT - Specifically created for BPD. This type of therapy works really well for personality disorders, PTSD, eating disorders, substance abuse and impulsive control disorders.

Interpersonal therapy - Created to treat major depressive disorder but is now also used for other depressive and mood disorders.

Gonna add my two cents as a research psychologist:

CBT does NOT work well if the individual has a history of being emotionally manipulated or gaslit, nor does it work well when the individual is working through traumas that have been used against them or disbelieved. CBT can feel like gaslighting, toxic positivity, denial of the seriousness of a situation, or emotional manipulation if not done very carefully. As such, it might be best to avoid it and find something else if you have a history of problems with the aforementioned experiences.

ACT also works REALLY WELL for individuals coping with sudden and "devastating" changes! It's often adapted for use by disability specific clinics to help newly diagnosed patients learn to cope with the limitations on their environments. People with disabilities (PWDs) tend to feel pressured to not express their disability related distress around non-PWDs and, as such, tend to see those feelings as shameful. There's a lot of "I should be more grateful" or "it's not as bad as it could be" feelings around disability as a result of this pressure and ACT is great for undoing them!

DBT is generally amazing for stress disorders and preventing stress disorder symptomatology in at risk populations. It teaches you stress tolerance skills and how best to avoid or diminish conflicts, allowing you to avoid the sorts of environmental triggers that commonly worsen stress disorder symptoms.

Interpersonal therapy is also great for neurodivergent folks, victims of childhood emotional abuse, and children of parents with untreated/unmanaged psychiatric disorders. Essentially, if you grew up with difficulty interacting effectively with and relating to others, interpersonal therapy can help you understand why and change those interactions in the future. Healthier relationships and social interactions are a great way to break the cycle of abuse for those of us raised by parents who were emotionally abusive and/or had untreated mental illnesses.

Since no one has mentioned it on this post, I'd like to add that most therapists these days practice a sort of integrative therapy. They'll take what they find most effective from each type of therapy for each individual problem, and piece together something a little more tailor made for their patients. This is part of why seeing an actual therapist is so important. Not every aspect of the aforementioned therapies will be relevant to every problem. Some aspects may even be harmful to handling some problems. The therapist is trained to pick out these things and adjust accordingly, unlike the average self help book or online resource. But knowing the types of therapies available and what you want to get from therapy is an immense part of finding a therapist that will suit your needs, so please research things carefully and think over what you need before selecting one!

Questions One, Three, Ten and Thirteen are probably impossible to decipher. 

Question Two is definitely “Do you remember when we first met?” 

Question Four is probably “Did you read my sonnet from the theatrical program of [whatever performance, but probably The World is Quiet Here]?” We know this because his answer involves him saying he remembers the performance he reviewed, but did not remember getting a program or a poem, and said sonnet- My Silence Knot- is in the back of the book. 

Question Five is something along the lines of “How many children do you think would be ideal for a family?” 

Question Six is “What is a braeman?” 

Question Seven is “What is a baticeer?” 

Question Eight is “What is an anagram?” 

Question Nine is either something like “How long will you love me?” or “Do you still love me?” 

Question Eleven is hard, but I believe it’s probably something along the lines of “How much of what we read is coded?” or “How much of the world isn’t what it seems?” 

Question Twelve has something to do with his answer to Five, so I feel like it’s probably “How much family do you still have left?”

hey since i’m occasionally giving out adult advice. anyone wanna know my very adult and very boring and very sensible suggestion for grief gifts for friends and family when someone close to them dies

alright. this is shamelessly stolen from my godparents when they did this when my grandma passed about ten years ago, and since then i’ve been on both sides of this and it’s surprisingly thoughtful and useful. this is particularly important when people are like, in charge of funeral prep, but anyone who just heard someone close to them just died is gonna be in a certain headspace, so it probably works regardless. people are gonna be sending cards and flowers and other very nice, but ultimately useless gifts.

don’t do that. go to the grocery store and order one of those deli party platters. the ones with like, four different kinds each of meats and cheeses, maybe some sides, and veggies, and bread, and condiments. get the vegetarian version if you know they’re vegetarians. whatever. you know better than i how many people are gonna be eating it, but guess maybe, like, four day’s worth of food.

because, here’s the thing. cards and flowers are very nice, and remind you that you’re in people’s thoughts. but you know what you just. don’t even want to think about when someone dies? making dinner. going to the grocery store. ordering takeout. whatever. you don’t want to have to think about food. you just want to eat in between planning a funeral and working through your grief.

without getting too into it, when my grandma died, we were thrown for a loop. and we ate nothing but what was on that goddamned deli platter for days. because it was quick and easy and fresh and tasted good and we didn’t have to think about food. and ten years later, i don’t remember those cards or flowers, but i sure as hell remember the deli platter.

so next time someone’s going through something, when a family member or close friend just passed. go to your nearest grocery store, and if you can, walk a deli platter over to their place. as soon as you can after you hear. they may look at you weird when you hand it to them, but trust me, in the long run they’re gonna thank you.

Food helps. I don’t remember the cards & flowers. What I DO remember is the amazing lasagna somebody made me. It fed me for a week during a time when I was simply incapable of finding or preparing meals. The deli platter is an interesting twist on that and I’m filing that away for sure.

When my dad died, everything was a black blur of grief and nobody could even really approach taking basic care of ourselves. A family friend made and brought over a HUMONGOUS batch of jambalaya, and it is basically the chief reason nobody fainted from hunger.

This applies widely. Making or getting someone dinner is an excellent way to care for someone who is going through a hard time. It’s a solid way to make sure someone has one of their survival basics covered and can focus on the other stuff.

The kinds of good above are also perfect. Get people something that is nutritious and filling but not too fatty. You wanna give them that god hearty food feel and not that gross fast food feel. If the leftovers taste good on a slice of bread the next day, even better.

I was wondering, I know Steven is really into fashion, but given that the comics are usually in black and white, we don't get to see a lot of his color choices. Does he lean more towards a certain color when choosing his outfits, like how canon Steven seems to have an affinity for pink?

I think I’ve drawn several Steven-outfits at this point, but it’s true that it’s not quite enough to gauge his style. I would say he gravitates towards primary colors. He also likes pink a lot! And despite his namesake, there is plenty of color in his outfits!

There’s more outfits I have planned to draw him in, but at the moment I’m overwhelmed with just getting season 3 finished, so I’m putting it off. I’ll do more in the future though! Keeping an eye on his Twitter is probably the best way to keep track of it.

Tricks to make your voice lower

Lowering your voice is always a chore. Coaching your voice to be lower than what it was previously was is tricky but there are ways to make your voice sound more masculine before you start T.

The Tilt Technique: Probably the most common trick and some of you may already know how to do this:

-Tilt your head back and stretch out your neck, I’ve figure out that doing that helps prevent making your voice sore afterwards.

- Now, don’t keep your neck too stretched but still keep it back and hum at your lowest volume.

- Slowly lower your head to have your chin meet your chest while still humming.

- Do this about 5-10 times or until your voice is at the point at which you want it.

- keep in mind that this effect is only temporary (until you practice more and more); and that doing this too much without water or breaks can actually damage your vocal chords and give you multiple throat aches.

Some other things that give an immediate illusion that your voice is naturally that low:

-Talking slower and quieter: This helps a lot with passing, especially in stores and in schools.

- Physically lowering your voice slightly: we can all lower our voices to sound deeper, but when is it to the point that people can notice it? Unfortunately lowering it too much is super noticable, but lowering it a little bit isn’t usually that noticable.

There are many temporary (and by temporary I mean like 20 minutes) things you can do but those aren’t that good.

If you have money or are able, there are also voice coaches that can help you get your voice lower.
