a new heart
Over the years, I’ve reached into my chest and pulled out pieces of my heart. I carefully gave those pieces to people I thought I could trust. But as I suspected, they took those pieces and ran, giving me nothing in return.
I stand here now with a hollow hole in my chest and empty hands. I have blood that still drips from my finger tips and salt that runs from my eyes. I have nothing left to give.
They say when a lizard loses its tail, another one grows back. I wonder if that could be the same for me. I feel something inside me growing, I believe it’s another heart. But could this heart be different? Like a broken bone that has healed, could this heart be stronger? If so, my blood will run through this heart and give it life. My body will nourish it’s growth with wisdom. My mind will teach this heart that it’s ok to love itself before loving another.
