It's my 8 year anniversary on Tumblr 🥳
“My friend told me a story he hadn’t told anyone for years. When he used to tell it years ago people would laugh and say, ‘Who’d believe that? How can that be true? That’s daft.’ So he didn’t tell it again for ages. But for some reason, last night, he knew it would be just the kind of story I would love. When he was a kid, he said, they didn’t use the word autism, they just said ‘shy’, or ‘isn’t very good at being around strangers or lots of people.’ But that’s what he was, and is, and he doesn’t mind telling anyone. It’s just a matter of fact with him, and sometimes it makes him sound a little and act different, but that’s okay. Anyway, when he was a kid it was the middle of the 1980s and they were still saying ‘shy’ or ‘withdrawn’ rather than ‘autistic’. He went to London with his mother to see a special screening of a new film he really loved. He must have won a competition or something, I think. Some of the details he can’t quite remember, but he thinks it must have been London they went to, and the film…! Well, the film is one of my all-time favourites, too. It’s a dark, mysterious fantasy movie. Every single frame is crammed with puppets and goblins. There are silly songs and a goblin king who wears clingy silver tights and who kidnaps a baby and this is what kickstarts the whole adventure. It was ‘Labyrinth’, of course, and the star was David Bowie, and he was there to meet the children who had come to see this special screening. ‘I met David Bowie once,’ was the thing that my friend said, that caught my attention. ‘You did? When was this?’ I was amazed, and surprised, too, at the casual way he brought this revelation out. Almost anyone else I know would have told the tale a million times already. He seemed surprised I would want to know, and he told me the whole thing, all out of order, and I eked the details out of him. He told the story as if it was he’d been on an adventure back then, and he wasn’t quite allowed to tell the story. Like there was a pact, or a magic spell surrounding it. As if something profound and peculiar would occur if he broke the confidence. It was thirty years ago and all us kids who’d loved Labyrinth then, and who still love it now, are all middle-aged. Saddest of all, the Goblin King is dead. Does the magic still exist? I asked him what happened on his adventure. ‘I was withdrawn, more withdrawn than the other kids. We all got a signed poster. Because I was so shy, they put me in a separate room, to one side, and so I got to meet him alone. He’d heard I was shy and it was his idea. He spent thirty minutes with me. ‘He gave me this mask. This one. Look. ‘He said: ‘This is an invisible mask, you see? ‘He took it off his own face and looked around like he was scared and uncomfortable all of a sudden. He passed me his invisible mask. ‘Put it on,’ he told me. ‘It’s magic.’ ‘And so I did. ‘Then he told me, ‘I always feel afraid, just the same as you. But I wear this mask every single day. And it doesn’t take the fear away, but it makes it feel a bit better. I feel brave enough then to face the whole world and all the people. And now you will, too. ‘I sat there in his magic mask, looking through the eyes at David Bowie and it was true, I did feel better. ‘Then I watched as he made another magic mask. He spun it out of thin air, out of nothing at all. He finished it and smiled and then he put it on. And he looked so relieved and pleased. He smiled at me. ‘'Now we’ve both got invisible masks. We can both see through them perfectly well and no one would know we’re even wearing them,’ he said. ‘So, I felt incredibly comfortable. It was the first time I felt safe in my whole life. ‘It was magic. He was a wizard. He was a goblin king, grinning at me. ‘I still keep the mask, of course. This is it, now. Look.’ I kept asking my friend questions, amazed by his story. I loved it and wanted all the details. How many other kids? Did they have puppets from the film there, as well? What was David Bowie wearing? I imagined him in his lilac suit from Live Aid. Or maybe he was dressed as the Goblin King in lacy ruffles and cobwebs and glitter. What was the last thing he said to you, when you had to say goodbye? ‘David Bowie said, ‘I’m always afraid as well. But this is how you can feel brave in the world.’ And then it was over. I’ve never forgotten it. And years later I cried when I heard he had passed.’ My friend was surprised I was delighted by this tale. ‘The normal reaction is: that’s just a stupid story. Fancy believing in an invisible mask.’ But I do. I really believe in it. And it’s the best story I’ve heard all year.”

This is for tomorrow, March 26. But with Rupert filming for the James Corden show, I’m thinking he might not actually be part of the location shoot. Just a guess.
Forgot this one which is when I was walking and talking with Rupert. Armando’s head there.
Day Tripping for Death of Stalin
How far would you go for Rupert Friend? For me it’s pretty darn far. I drove from Las Vegas to LA and back in a day. For east coasters that’s equivalent to driving from NYC to DC and back. But I’d do it all again, yessiree bob.
Found out Friday that there were going to be two Death of Stalin Q&As for which Rupert was scheduled to appear. My Rupert partner in crime Sarah (@CommonsenseatT - Twitter) who lives in LA area and I made our plans and off we go.
Got to the first theater, Arclight, for the 1pm showtime with plenty of time to spare. It turned out that Sarah could not make the 1st showing so I was alone for that one. I was seated in the 2nd row with as good as viewing for Q&A time as I could hope. It was Rupert, Jason Isaacs, writer/director Armando Iannucci and Andrea Riseborough. I won’t report on what was said cuz you can watch for yourself on the link below. This Q&A lasted about 15 minutes and then the stars were off quick to get across town to the next Q&A. Me hot on their heels.
The second Q&A at the Landmark (showtime 2:10pm) was longer and more relaxed. (Both of the MCs at each theater were good.) I managed to make it over to the mall in good time but didn’t know where the heck to park so obviously parked as far as humanly possible from the theater. I arrived a little after it had started (very hot and sweaty, sigh). I didn’t try to find my assigned seat but just hung on the wall and started filming. Then I realized that Rupert was going to look at Armando most of the time which meant I would have a bad angle of the back of his head and moved to the other side of the theater.
From both Q&As there’s some good information about the filming of DoS. What was improvised and what wasn’t, about Rupert having practiced for his spitting scene, etc. Jason was charming and outgoing.
Surprising to me, after the guests were done, they didn’t jet out the theater but hung around and signed autographs, took selfies and chatted with people. I slinked down to the front trying to photo what I could. About this time Sarah who probably arrived about the same time I did and I connected. Then we asked for photos from Rupert – first together, and then we got separately.
Something surreal happens to your brain during these things and it seems everything happens so fast you don’t notice things. First, Sarah had her arm wrapped around Rupert’s and I didn’t even notice that Rupert had put his arm around me! For her alone photo, Sarah had to ask Rupert to bend down since she’s so short. It makes for a silly Rupert!
Rupert was gracious and kind with everyone who came up. However, mine and Sarah’s observation is that he is clearly to some degree introverted and does not like this kind of thing much. He did his nervous gesture of hands in pockets. Sarah says she heard him say to one of the PR people (maybe?) several times “let’s leave.”
When they walked out of the theater, Sarah and I were behind them. I swear it just worked out that way, we weren’t stalking them! Then in the lobby they did a really funny thing which is stop at the concession stand for popcorn. Not sure who wanted it. We were standing from a little distance away. Some woman came up and talked to me… asked if I had gotten a pic. I replied I had and she said good, cause she’d hate for shy people to not get one. I said that’s usually me but I got one this time. I told her I had driven in from Las Vegas just for this and she remarked that she had overheard something about Rupert doing a Comic Con in Vegas. WHAT?!? I don’t know what came over me but I went up to Rupert, who by now the party was walking away from concessions toward the escalator to leave. I asked him if he was going to be in Las Vegas (I don’t think I mentioned comic con because there’s only one in town that I know of it and it’s not big and I can’t fathom him going to that). He said politely, “Maybe.” And I mentioned that I had driven in from Las Vegas just for the Q&As and I’d be driving back. Armando who had been listening said, “Wow.” Rupert said thanks for coming, and they were gone. I felt like Rupert either genuinely didn’t know if he was coming to Vegas or was being cagey about it. Or maybe the lady totally misheard what was said. But I’ll be on the lookout for that!
Sarah and I both know we are being spoiled with Rupert these days! But we suspect that his LA filming will soon be over and he’ll have retreated back to NYC so we’ll bask while we might.

Death of Stalin Q&A - Arclight Theater in Hollywood. March 11, 2018. We lucked out with RF in white under a light. Jason was in the dark. Even with mics the sound quality sucks, and forgive the crappy camerawork—did the best I could.
Armando Iannucci along with Jason Isaacs will be doing some Q&A's in Hollywood this weekend after a jaunt in NYC. I think Rupert fans should attend these to ask questions about our boy. And you never know, maybe Rupert will make a surprise appearance. Actually, I am curious to know why he's not doing any promotion for this movie. Is he that busy with Strange Angel?
YES! Rupert fans anywhere near Hollywood, PLEASE attend and report back. What say you @eyecandylv BlipGhost@BlipGhost @daylightkaty? You guys did a fantastic job at Mandy’s Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony!
As for promoting DOS, he DID show up to the LA premiere.
I will be there. I have tickets for both showings but it will be tricky to move from one theater to another so keeping fingers crossed about LA traffic. (And this after driving for ~5 hrs for me since I don’t actually live in LA). @commonsenseatT will also be there. We’ll do our best to capture what we can.

A T-Shirt Story (from @CommonsenseatT)
[This is Sarah Michael’s @CommonsenseatT (Twitter) account of getting her t-shirt signed by Rupert Friend. Since she doesn’t have Tumblr, I am posting it on her behalf.]
My bf gave me this Peter Quinn t-shirt and an HL cap as soon as he realized my obsession. We were binge-watching Homeland and it didn't take me long to fall in love with this "inside softie, outside toughie" badass, hot assassin. Obviously, t-shirt was a memento to keep. Fast forward year and a half later, when I heard Rupert would be at Mandy's Walk of Fame ceremony, the t-shirt, a permanent pen, and HL cap (with Quinn's name glued on it) were ready to go! I was carrying them in a bag waiting for the right moment. Don't remember how, but people around us found out about the t-shirt way before celebs arrival, and were giving ideas how to approach Rupert. After a thorough planning with @dragoLV and my bf, I finally situated myself right at celebs drop off location. Mandy and wife arrived first. Few people asked for his autograph right off the bat. He came forward and graciously and happily signed few pictures. I became even more excited, cause I thought same thing would happen with Rupert. Can't tell you enough how ridiculously and embarrassingly nervous I was at that moment. Then his car arrived, and THERE HE WAS! Literally few yards away from me. He helped Aimee get out of the car, and started walking away. I called his name, twice, asking for his autograph. He looked, smiled, and kept walking! I called Aimee, but she did the same. I was genuinely heartbroken(!!!) and told my bf (of all people) that "Rupert ignored me!" Bless my sweet bf heart, who not only was understanding but also gave me some encouraging words! Luckily, there was still enough room for me to stand right behind Rupert and Aimee as we planned. I put away the t-shirt, convinced it would never happen, and focused on taking pictures and posting them on Twitter. At this point, I was overwhelmed by this odd, unpredictable opportunity that was given to me. In spite of this, I was shamelessly pushing myself here and there for better angles. Must say that in addition to immense help from @dragoLV and bf, I also got some help from nice people (including a young tourist from India, and a couple, also tourists, from England) without even asking for their help. Now, here we are, after ceremony ended and celebs pictures were taken next to Mandy's star. And then a moment later, unbeknownst to me, Rupert was standing right beside me just outside of my peripheral vision signing autographs. @dragoLV started telling me that Rupert was there, "Get the t-shirt! Get the t-shirt!" I turned, and all I saw was Quinn standing there with those big blue eyes, and I was just frozen like a deer in headlights with my cell in one hand, handbag in the other. I snapped out of it when my bf snatched my cell phone out of my hand saying, "Get the shirt out!" As soon as I pulled it out of the bag, Rupert saw his likeness and said, "Oh, what is that?" I handed him the shirt (which had Quinn portrait and the word "Knight" in bold letters), and bf briefly explained that it was from Showtime online store. Rupert seemed a little surprised at the piece of merchandise and signed it very carefully. I thanked him, of course, and yet stayed motionless, hypnotized by his amazing blue eyes that were looking right at me. Next thing I remember was both @dragoLV and bf telling me to pose next to Rupert and hold the t-shirt for a picture, which I did (not one of my better pictures, but definitely my biggest smile ever!) I was so thankful that when he was about to go to other fans, my bf kept him little longer to tell him that he was looking forward to seeing The Death of Stalin. You could tell that it was a favorite subject for Rupert, and he happily said that it was coming up in two weeks. I told him that I couldn't wait to see it. Thinking back, it was indeed amazing and so impressive that Rupert patiently stayed with us for so long. I just wish I had a video of it! And oh, I can never forgive myself for not even shaking his hand when I had a chance. And that, my friends, was the story of my Quinn t-shirt. Oh, one last thing: When they were all walking towards the place for lunch, Mandy was shaking fans' hands on his way, to thank them for coming to his ceremony. Apparently, he had put his hand out to shake mine as well, but I was so mesmerized by Rupert that I didn't even notice him. So embarrassing!
We met some characters. This guy let us have his photo (by permission) who is from India and had been vacationing in LA for 3 weeks and happened to stumble across the Ceremony. But at least he knew who Rupert and Mandy were and was familiar with Homeland. A lot of tourists going by had no clue. This was after they had already crossed the street.
The best of my pix of Rupert during his signing and selfies with fans. The black and white is the t-shirt Sarah got Rupert to sign!
