They had been standing in companionable silence, gazing at the same bookcase for a good bit of time already before Paxton tipped towards the stranger and confided: âThatâs one of my wave hello books.â
At the manâs politely bewildered expression, he gestured to the philosopherâs book in the manâs hand. âI know that Iâll read it one day and Iâm going to like it. So thereâs never any real rush to do it,â he explained. âItâs always going to be there when I want. But then every time I see it, I know itâs waiting for me, so I like to wave hello. Itâs like seeing an old friend.â
Paxton nodded to the book with the sort of feeling youâd give a fond acquaintance you didnât expect to see. âSometimes I like that so much that I never do get around to reading them after all.â
@ezekielrexâ
Tracing the spine with his thumb, Zeke mouthed the title to himself as he turned the heavy volume around in his hands. It was just what he had been looking for. Taking a deep breath, he flipped through the pages carefully, ensuring the topics he thought were covered were indeed in it. The texture of the rough canvas felt comforting as he palmed it and the delicate paper was familiar between his fingers. He focused harder on the sensations, trying to calm his racing heart. It had been weeks since his last outing, and while it hadn't been as nerve-wracking as the first few times, it was close. He was sure something was looming on the horizon, and it was making his skin crawl.
As a voice rang above him, Zeke somehow managed to stifle the physical flinch as his stomach dropped. He glanced up at the man and blinked. Not familiar. It took another second before the words made sense, but relief washed over him when they did. It wasn't someone from back home. He hadn't been caught.
"Thatâ" He cleared his throat and straightened his posture. It hadn't just been the sudden comment that surprised him, but the concept itself took puzzled him. It sounded.., carefree. "That is actually quite beautiful." Glancing down at the book in question, Zeke first relaxed his white-knuckled fingers, then patted it gently as he balanced it with the others he had picked out. "I don't think I could do that. What do you do if you never see it again? Do you not think of what you missed out on?"
giggle-me-thisâ:
Nate just smirked as his assumption was proven correct; this person didnât understand a blatant movie reference. One of those, huh? âItâs a type of car, from the eightiesâŠâ Nate added lightly as he took a drag, surveying the strangerâs twitchy mannerisms, his laughably forced stab at self-assurance. Cute. ââŠyou knowâknown transporters of time machinesâŠâÂ
And suddenly Nate wasnât in such a hurry to leave Diagon Alley anymore; he could spare a few more minutes, couldnât he? Anyway, he was just looking.
He leaned down close to the boyâs ear and teased with amusement, in a low tone, âMm, nice effort, but how about you try that once more, with feeling?â Nate straightened, and took another drag, and then gestured with the cigarette as he added, âOr at least tell me what it is youâre browsing for, and allow me to point you in the right direction?â
.
The explanation made Zeke furrow his brows. Why use something like a car as a transporters of time machines? How big were they? That was definitely a waste of magic. Smaller personal items would be much more fitting. Something wearable perhaps. One thing was certain, if he was to continue sneaking out and bumping into Others like this, Zeke needed to ask Brodie for a reading list on cultural references. Or perhaps ask Quinn a couple of questions.
As the man leant in, his breath warm on Zekeâs skin, a shudder began at the bottom of his skull and shook him all the way down to this legs. Zeke tried to clear his throat to answer but to no avail. âIâmâI, I, uh,â He croaked out. Quickly, he told himself, say anything, but his mind was reeling from the sensory overload and for maybe the first time in Zekeâs life, there was no thoughts in his head. After blinking dumbly at the man for what felt like minutes a deep, Neanderthal part of his brain kicked in and Zeke managed to squeak out the only thing he could think of. âFood?â
q, iâm sorry.
giggle-me-this·:
Nate was all anxiety and impatience as he walked briskly through Diagon Alley; he wasnât technically hiding from the magical world, anymore, not like he was months agoâbut he still didnât particularly care to be seen and recognized, either. He shifted the bag of basic potions ingredients he was carrying to one arm and used the other to dig through his pocket for a cigarette. He was doing a demonstration on brewing potions for the hedges, later, since it was a magical skill that didnât require a wand (âA fucking monkey could manage brewing a potionâ is how Xi had phrased it) and had picked up some ingredients they were running low on in their supplies at the house.Â
Nate put the cigarette between his lips and lit it with a much-practiced snap, and hadnât even managed to inhale before someone ran right into him (or maybe it was the other way around; Nate wasnât exactly watching where he was going). âMotherfuckingââ Nate cursed as the cigarette fell from his mouth; his hand flew out and he just barely managed to catch it, right above the smoldering tip, a millisecond before it singed the floppy brown hair that hung in the face of the person whoâd bumped him. Nate exhaled in relief, heart racing; thank you, you beautiful warped probability field.Â
ââMy badâ?â Nate parroted sarcastically. Was it fucking 1995? Who talked like that? Then he took a moment to appraise the boy in front of him, and actually considered the possibility that he might be from another time period, the way he looked all dazed and wildly out of place, in a (very oddly) rather charming sort of way.Â
Smirking, Nate took a drag off the cigarette and then said, âAre you likeâlost, or something? Trying to remember where you parked your DeLorean?â
.
Zeke watched as the cigarette, in slow motion, fell from the strangerâs mouth and somehow being caught right before he lost a lock of hair, or perhaps an eye. âWow.â Zeke couldnât help the wonder that crept into his voice at the reflexes of the other man. Was this typical of Others? Were they just so imbued with magic that they could dispense it when they liked? Personal magic wasnât allowed as a Divine. Only in certain situations where it helped and benefited the whole, and only by adults who had received their Conductor. Catching a cigarette from burning a stranger who had just bumped into you didnât seem like it qualified.Â
There was no denying Zeke was out of his element here. Slowly but surely he was grasping the reason they werenât allowed to mingle with Others without a chaperone, but somehow he didnât find himself caring. Adventures was to be had, were they not? Zeke snapped his own mouth shut with an audible clatter of teeth, not realizing he had been straight up gaping at the man. Handsome man, his mind supplied, quite unnecessarily. âExcuse me? My?â Zeke furrowed his brow at the comment from the manâhis what now?ââ
âNo, Iâm not lost.â Squaring his shoulders Zeke somehow still managed to look curled in on himself, if only a smidge straighter and taller. Barely a smidge. He didnât look nor sound at all convincing. Looking around the street he grasped at something familiar but he had never taken notice of the names of any of the shops when he went on one of his escapades. âIâm just.., browsing?â
@giggle-me-thisâ
All his life Zeke had been told about this mysterious world away from home. A place the Others lived, the inferior magic havers who werenât descendant of the Divine Angels like them. He wasnât quite sure if he believed all of Motherâs teachings but particularly not about the non-Divine. Thereâs no way they could be all bad if they had magic in them. They couldnât. Magic was of Angels.
He had always asked questions. More often than not too many. In the past months though he hadnât just asked questions he knew he shouldnât, Zeke had broken rules. Divine Rules. They werenât allowed into Diagon Alley without an chaperone, yet here he was. All by himself. Perhaps he hadnât thought this throughââMy bad,â Zeke murmured as he bumped into someone.Â
I want to give you your first taste of sin.
âI think that might be aâIâm, Iâm not sure if I should... Maybe if we donât use that word?â
