I don’t normally reblog things to my Furby blog, but I felt this was the easiest way to answer your questions! I’m fabledfurbies, and I go by she/her or they/them pronouns. I’ll just go ahead and answer your basic questions!
At what age did you get your first Furby?
I suppose that depends on what form of Furby you’re talking about. I did not have any of the electronic ones growing up, but I did have a few of the Furby Buddies when they came out. They were all the basic beanbag ones. I didn’t own an electronic one until around February this year. I sort of stole him from my boyfriend, who inherited him from a mutual friend when she moved.
What first got you into Furbies?
I was in no way obsessed with them as a kid. What got me into them recently was stumbling upon a post on Tumblr that had an image of a Furby in it. I was like, “Oh hey! My boyfriend has one of these in the garage! I should see if it works!” So I put batteries in the Furby. Nothing happened, so I left him on my desk. Twenty-four hours later, he came to life suddenly and startled my boyfriend and me. So I named him Norman, after Norman Bates from the horror movie Psycho. After that, I started actively looking for Furby posts on Tumblr. It wasn’t long before I was searching for Furbies to buy online to expand my collection. I’ve even found a few in thrift stores! I also made a Furby blog to share them with the world, and I’m now at almost 500 followers. All because I saw a Tumblr post with a Furby in it!
Are you involved in the Furby community, and if so why/why not? If so, how would you describe the community as a whole?
I’d say I’m somewhat involved in the community since I have a Furby Tumblr. I post pictures of my Furbies and have offered giveaways for reaching certain follower milestones. I like to be involved because seeing that others love their Furbies just as much as I love mine reminds me I’m not alone in my (what some might call “unconventional”) hobbies.
I enjoy the community because everyone seems really sweet and nice. We all just want to enjoy these little robotic toys together without fear of ridicule. I think one of the best parts is we all enjoy seeing Furbies get glammed up!
I wanted to know a little bit about your custom Furbies! So if you customize Furbies. I’d love to hear all about it!
I’ve customized two Furbies so far! They are Maisy and Clover Coppershine! I had so much fun cleaning them and making them look beautiful again. Maisy is not quite done, as I decided to give the eyelashes I was going to use on her to a different Furby that needed them. So eventually she’ll get some really pretty fake lashes. Clover is completely finished, and wow am I proud of her! In the future, I’m also planning on making a couple of long Furbies so I’m excited for that!
Are you a collector and if so please tell me a bit about your collection!
I am definitely a collector. Last time I checked, I had over 50 Furbies including original 99s, 2005s, 2012s, a Boom, Buddies, McDonalds toys, and the figurines from the Find Furby game. The 2005s are definitely my favorite. I hope to get at least one in each of the color combos that I like. My most recent purchase was a white 2005 with a pink tummy and mane, who I’ll be introducing soon on my blog. My collection has a range of non-working and working Furbies, some which are mute. Most of my original adults are glitchy in some way, while my best working originals are all babies from 99 to 2000. I have acquired or made accessories for many of them, from necklaces to hats to aprons. Because of my Furbies, I’ve gotten back into sewing and have a reason to get my sewing machine out again. I haven’t crafted this much since I was a child, and I am loving it! I just wish I had more room to display them all properly.
There we go! If you have further questions, let me know! ^_^
Good luck and have fun with your essay!
