Jullian Gomes' take on Piracy in South Africa
One of our 2013 finalists , Mpho Manyisa interviewed Jullian Gomes, who is a South African DJ/Producer, about piracy and the effect it has on our music industry. This is what Jullian had to say:
1. How do you feel about Piracy in South Africa ?
I feel that, as a society we don't give it enough attention. When a store is robbed it's in the news or when someone has something taken away from them its noted, But when Piracy is committed its put aside as something that is not important but what people don't realize is the principle behind the crime is the exactly the same. There's no difference.
2. With organisations such as RISA anti-piracy unit (RAPU) that deals with piracy in South Africa, do you feel it is important for laws to be enforced regarding this crime?
Yes, A crime is a crime, So for the crime that is committed there needs to be a reaction. I feel more laws need to put in place and technology needs to be improved. I don't understand how we can send rockets into space yet we can't create a format of Audio or Visual information that is encrypted and can't be copied etc. More can be done.
3. As an artist in South Africa , how has piracy affected you and your music ?
Artists don't make much money off their music, Its all in the live performances. The Music is just used as an advert to get bookings etc.
4. Do you feel that piracy is escalating ? And what can we , as the youth in South Africa, do to educate society about piracy and the effects it has?
I think it comes down to educating people about piracy but at the end of the day, Each and every single person as a individual has to make the decision not to BBM each other songs or file share music. Its comes down to an individuals basic moral value.
5. What do you have to say to people who partake in piracy and illegal downloading ?
Not sure ? What do you say to a criminal ?? I guess the world has its way of coming back to you, The energy you put out is what you'll get in return.
