Prologue

The wind did not hold back that night, and it wouldn’t again for a long time. When it came I knew it signaled the end of our freedom. Our stolen freedom. What we did was wrong, I know it know and all of us knew it then. We couldn’t use the excuse of us just being kids, we had just ended our freshman year when we did it. Horrible things emerged from people who had previously been somewhat decent members of society, horrible things. Sad-film-esque backstories and absent adults weren’t enough to justify us doing something like that, something so atrocious and savage! We were already fading away, walking farther and farther from our innocence. Innocence, what a foreign thing, floating high above with the angels. Wouldn’t it be fun to pull one down?

I knew a boy who thought it was so. Ryan McCarthy was the one who brought me out to the woods that day, shot gun in hand. He had stolen the gun from his father’s shed while he was slaving away in the mines. Ryan was a year older than me, he seemed to like that superior position. I wasn’t too keen on following his orders, but suggestions were tempting. Before he even thought about the woods he wanted to practice his shooting; the targets would be small animals that had no chance of getting away from him. He didn’t like things that had a chance of escaping, it wasn’t fun to lose. Ryan never lost.

Tommy had nothing better to do than follow Ryan around, a shadow. The shadow was rather thin, of average height, and his skin almost looked yellowed or faded. Most of the time I would see him lurking around with no real purpose. I only noticed him because he and I were around each other so much in relation to Ryan and his hurtful antics. I never learned Tommy’s last name, I didn’t even know if Tommy was a nickname or not. I didn’t think either of those facts were important at the time, and to be honest I still don’t think they are. Sometimes I wondered if he had a life outside of when we were all together, did he go home to eat and sleep, was he even real?

I was nothing special, a sort of mix between the aforementioned bots. I got good grades, I did good deeds, I looked good, I was good at sports, but I was never great. Since I was stuck with mediocrity, I never thought to change. Change required hard work, hard work I wasn’t willing to withstand. After I came to that realization I just stopped trying to be great. Maybe if I had just changed nothing would’ve happened.
