got special permission from @r4venlyn to rant about how obliviously misogynistic unstable universe is soooo

it frustrates me to no end how 1) few non-male characters there are and 2) how those characters are treated once they exist. Jumperwho is by a longshot the strongest female character in uu and that's fully because her entire character is based on the arc she built for herself in lifesteal s5. because she's the only fem character not written by men. are u hearing me

princezam is the next best but I would argue that she doesn't count because they do not address her with feminine pronouns and she lost nearly all complexity after PZE (note, when she came out). every complexity is inserted by her and never addressed by wemmbu or anyone else

they nearly had it with marlow and I'll credit them with that given it's not their fault that controversy later came out, buuuut I can all but guarantee that she would not have been a recurring character beyond maybe 1 more episode

all that just to bring me to reina and fymada. icons both of them I adore their characters I just wish they had... anything. both of them are used ENTIRELY to further parrot's plotline and do not have screen time outside of this, unlike characters like wifies, theo, dean, egg, lomedy, mapicc, manepear, etc. to be fair, neither reina nor fymada are deuteragonists like several of the aforementioned male characters are. however. do you ever think about how all protags and all sidekicks are male. hm

fymada was only ever introduced to be (doomed) competition for parrot, and when she had 0 chance at winning the election (despite initially being far more popular than him) just threw in her support with him, which was just a plot reason for him to get votes. horace at least had more interest because he's a recurring character and known builder in the server, but fymada just didnt. her only thing was becoming mayor of capitol city, which has then only been explored in the context of parrot needing her help. we never get to see her as a character instead of a plot device despite the fairly important role she fills

reina has next to no screen time aside from standing there while parrot or theo talk. she has like 5 lines per hour, and her backstory is more important than she is. theo treats her like she's stupid (presumably because she's a new player and he's old, but that isn't... the smartest decision, casting wise) even though she consistently proves him wrong. she's almost painted to be smart and ruthless - but every action meant to indicate that was actually parrot's suggestion (i.e., the trident/dripstome and when she interrogated the hostage). her backstory serves only to motivate and justify parrot's actions. most of her lines are "theo, shut up and listen to the other man here." she never has ideas of her own, which i dont doubt she could, she's just wholly ignored in favor of the men in the room

I understand that there are exponentially fewer women in competitive gaming than there are men, and when you're casting, say, law generals, it's easier to find men to play those roles than women. but it's not like pvp women dont exist, it's not like redstoner women don't exist, it's not like roleplayer women don't exist. is jojo going to debut in uu? are we ever getting more squiddo or hannah? midmystix? even ivorycello is already involved via making music. it's not like they don't have options

uu has been wonderful for other areas of representation. there are actually a decent number of trans and queer people in it. it just kills me even more that they cannot have more women with agency because on god jumperwho is really the only one I can think of who doesnt just randomly stop getting invites to recording sessions

Liveblogging the new Flamefrags episode (I Joined the World’s Largest Minecraft Army) [spoilers]

Less than a minute in THANK FUCK flame is pointing out how bad Cindercrest sounds. Seeing him teaming with Billy and Cindercrest in Parrot’s episode threw me for a loop, and him telling Wemmbu that he joined because Lomedy likes them was not at all the logical reasoning we expected from uu!Flame.

Also Lomedy is the first character to actually explain why the old players dislike the new players. It makes a lot of sense! Having a massive influx of new players on a server with limited resources obviously means that there are less resources to go around than before, and we’d already known that starvation was a widespread issue from multiple of Parrot’s videos. I think it was a good choice for Parrot’s POV to ignore this motivation entirely in favor of focusing on the new players. It shows how Parrot is an unreliable narrator and refuses to believe he is in the wrong, and it also gives justification for Cindercrest wanting to completely overthrow Parrot instead of reasoning with him, as Parrot has proven himself to be unable to listen to the old players. (Not an endorsement of the ‘let’s kill all new players’ mentality but I get where they’re coming from)

Flame initially refusing ‼️‼️‼️ Smartest protagonist right here!!! My favorite protagonist right here!!!! A character who has his own opinions and motivations and doesn’t throw them all out of the window for the plot!!!! My GOAT!!!

Flame joining to protect Lomedy that makes sooo much sense omg! Also Lomedy making the decision to go instead of being dragged there by Flame is SUCH a peak moment for character agency (torchflower duo my beloved but Lomedy really got the short end of the stick most of the time). Also Flame trying to convince Lomedy while running after him jhkjnlksksds uu!Parrot could never.

Speaking of Parrot. People were speculating that Spoke was going to become the antagonist of season 3. I personally think Parrot would make an AMAZING villain POV. He’s King of Spawn. He won the election by getting a team of his friends to slaughter thousands of players who’d sided with his political opponent. Last episode he used hundreds of the TNT he’d bought with the last of his money not to fight Cindercrest directly, but to set a trap for and murder any remaining player of the Law who didn’t side with him. Can we talk about that actually? Parrot set that TNT there ahead of time. He’d known that Law wouldn’t join him, and he intended to kill them from the start. His speech wasn’t a plea for support, it was a threat against anyone who stood in his way. Villain Parrot when??

Flame points out that there has to be more to Cindercrest’s motivation than preventing old players from starving THANK YOU. ASTUTE OBSERVER OVER HERE. I do appreciate that he doesn’t paint Lomedy as a total fool, though. Even the most well-intentioned people are prey to propaganda. Type shit.

Saparata’s introduction 🔥🔥🔥

Also I find it interesting how he interrogated Lomedy and wouldn’t let him join until he showed his mace, whereas he let Flame in instantly. He even referenced that Flame’s story was like a “fairy tale.” PEAK antagonist characterization, he already comes across as manipulative and power-hungry. Funny how we now have two protagonists (Flame and Wemmbu) roped into fighting for villain groups aiming to take down Parrot (Cindercrest and Arachnid) because of their deuteragonists.

Immediately jumps to the attack on Spawn?? Which either means that we’re skipping the events of Wemmbu’s episode (in which case what information did Flame need from Egg?), or Wemmbu’s latest episode happens after the attack on Spawn. I personally hope we get to see Wemmbu in this episode because I want to know why Flame needed info from Eggchan, but I get it if there isn’t anything new that Flame’s perspective would add to those events otherwise.

I also. Forgot that Billy was allied with Cindercrest. I’m not going to lie I thought he was just his own solo menace. I don’t remember the reveal that he’s a Cindercrest member (pretty sure it happens in the Parrot episode where we met Reina, though).

Flame pointing out that it’s weird he and Billy are on the blimp by themselves, Billy responds with ‘we’re both the strongest in all of Cindercrest,’ which like. #1 that’s totally a setup for Flame to duel ShoeBilly at some point. #2 Parrot’s gonna have some trap to obliterate all of the Cindercrest players and Flame and ShoeBilly are going to have to take on Spawn as a duo. Or something. Maybe not. That’s just my guess.

“Fort Feather” WE CANNOT BE SERIOUS. WE CCAANNNNOOTT BE SERIOUS RIGHT NOW. FORT FEATHER? You mean the training fort for the army of a bird??? Yo. Lock in. (It is kind of a tuff name but also. Feathers get incinerated. Name it Fort Talon or something.)

Ohhhhhh nevermind the blimp has more than two players on it. Also that makes sense and I think it’s a good plan.

God can you imagine how fucking terrifying it would be to be in Parrot’s army and look up and see Flamefrags leading an army of netherite players from the sky.

“We decimated them” Saparata stfu Parrot had a trap for you there. He ordered his people to flee when you arrived so they wouldn’t be killed by the trap. Lock in.

“We need the orbital strike cannon” NO YOU DO NOT. NO YOU DO NOT NEED THE ORBITAL STRIKE CANNON. WHAT THE FUCK???

THEYRE GOING AFTER WEMMBU OMG. HOLY SHIT.

Also Saps sent Flame to find the orbital strike cannons but like. The blue invis player was right there? Who has Egg’s book? And knows where the cannons are because they were in the book?

Wait nvm Saps introduced the invis player as ‘someone who knows a lot about the server.’ Ok.

Also Saps is so aggressive in that scene wtf.

Pause. Invis player is saying they need to take Eggchan hostage and ask him where the orbitals are. I GUARANTEE you that Egg wrote down the location of the Forge in the lore book (although now that I’m typing this, I’m remembering an interaction where Wemmbu told Egg not to write it down in the book so that he would be the only one who could access the Forge).

Flame not wanting to go along with it raaaaaaa imperial fire duo go!!!

So we do get Flame’s POV!! That’s awesome.

“I didn’t know we were using stasis chambers in the Big ‘26” LMAOAOAOAOOOO

Also poor eggchan. Professional damsel in distress. And he’s telling the wheat civ people not to fight 😭😭

But Flame didn’t kill any of them! Instead of slaughtering them on the spot! Character development 🔥🔥

Oh! Flame said that he was forced to capture Egg because he was in Cindercrest. I didn’t catch the “forced” in his dialogue in Wemmbu’s episode. Flamefrags my favorite protagonist I hope you kill can kill Saparata at the end of this arc for all the shit he’s already put you through.

Damn Wemmbu’s crash out is so much more apparent in Flame’s POV. He sounds genuinely stressed to have Egg’s life threatened :(

“It may not look like it, but me and Wemmbu and relatively cool with each other” I WIN. I WON. IMPERIAL FIRE CANON ALLIES. I WIN. GENUINELY ITS OVER I WON YOU ALL CAN GO HOME. ‼️‼️‼️‼️

FUCK he immediately admitted to betrayal and going behind Wemmbu’s back. I celebrate too early for this shit. Every goddamn time.

I do appreciate Flame walking us through his line of reasoning for betraying Wemmbu though. Betray Wemmbu -> get to Egg -> get to the orbitals -> help Cindercrest -> Lomedy survives. Thank you Flame for not leaving the audience to make that logical jump alone because you KNOW they would have misunderstood it.

THE CLOSEUP ON WEMMBU AS HE MAKES HIS ULTIMATUM OMLLLLLL and then just followed up with “am I included in that?” Omllllllllll

Also new fight theme?? I love it it’s really cool :) It feels less intense/metal than the other Flamefrags themes, which I think matches how Flame’s fighting style has gotten calmer and more controlled as he progresses towards being a Combat Grandmaster.

Yungy being the only one talking during the fight is so funny wth 😭😭 Flame is locked because he’s a Combat Master, Wemmbu is locked because his best friend’s life is on the line, invis player is silent because they don’t really talk, so Yungy is just left to do all of the commentary TT

I fully was not locked in during Wemmbu’s episode apparently I completely missed all of these vocal cues and changes to his demeanor.

Due to the weird server mechanics being forced to load the game for tens of thousands of players chunkbans stopped functioning? Idk I feel like we’re long overdue for getting someone banned in a way other than killing them straight up.

Ok W Reina but also like. Well no I looked it up and she’s played by a youtuber named hpneybee who has currently 117 subscribers. Which I guess is chill and it’s probably a situation similar to how Eggchan joined the server but like idk something about her is throwing me off. It’s probably because the thing with Marlow just happened and my first impression of Reina was that she sounded like she was voiced by an AI but it’s totally possible that’s not the case.

“Death happens in war” Lomedy are you hearing this guy??? Remember at the start of the episode where your whole motivation was to stop the deaths of players? Remember when Parrot claimed surrender and you talked about how great it was that nobody had to die? PLEASE just leave Cindercrest your leader VERY OBVIOUSLY does not care if his soldiers die PLEASE leave so Flame can kill his ass omL

Alright so final thoughts/predictions

Flame is still my goat. Like Wemmbu’s POV is my favorite but Flame is my favorite protagonist by far. I love it when characters are allowed to actually be smart instead of just telling the audience that they’re smart 💀 or bashing their head into a wall until they break through (sorry Wemmbu but you have to learn patience at some point)

Parrot is probably going to upload next with a summary of the two battles shown in this episode and a few more battles against both Cindercrest and Arachnid.

Spoke is doing his own thing right now. Like completely detached. Honestly though I’m really enjoying the arc he has going on and I hope his character fundamentally changes by the end in a way that will come to affect the other protagonists.

Wemmbu is going to have to team up with Flame due to working for Arachnid. Flame might help free Egg and work with him to turn on Arachnid and Cindercrest once Lomedy finally leaves? Or gets killed? I don’t think I would mind a Lomedy death guys I’m gonna be completely honest (I think it is unlikely though given the fakeout death from the Mist arc). Also somewhere in there is gonna be the favor that Wemmbu owes Parrot but it might just be like a “hey Wemmbu kill those guys” “already on it” type of situation.

Doodles from Flame’s new video (1 VS 1000 Player Minecraft War) (yap under the cut)

Ngl this might be my new favorite unstable episode.

The kind of horrific irony of Flowtives claiming that he killed Flame’s best friend only for Flame to turn around and kill Flow’s in return. Skrilley’s insane voice acting when they run from the attack on his village. Flame going from his lowest point of focus, literally dropping his sword mid-battle, and returning at his highest point of focus with mastery over the flow state. Absolute cinema.

Also can we talk about how much Flame has grown as a character? He went from only caring about being the strongest, to only caring about becoming a combat grandmaster, to now caring about Lomedy and resolving to do more things that Lomedy enjoys instead of just dragging him around everywhere. Genuinely incredible character writing.

I’m not the first person to say that Flowtives is probably going to become a major villain in the future. People have pointed out that Flame burned the elytra and the mace of the Mist right in front of him, but I’d also like to emphasize that Flame also killed Flow’s student and best friend. All four protagonists have placed a large emphasis on their deuteragonists for the current arcs, so it would make sense that a major motivation for the villains would be the protagonists harming the villains’ friends in some way (we can already see this with Billy being upset that his student, Theo, ignores the values that Billy taught him in order to stay with Parrot).

Also I’d like to point out that having this episode set in the Mist, a place literally designed to make you lost, is perfect for the setting where Flame loses (albeit temporarily) both his best friend and his composure. The Mist as a whole represents loss (it’s literally lost to the server - most people don’t know it exists), and I can’t wait for Flowtives to leave the Mist in an attempt to inflict his own loss (Mistrul/the elytra and mace) back on Flame.

(Side note, it’s really funny to me that the supposed leader of the Mist is called Mistrul. Like. MISTrul. Are we serious.)

I didn’t mind the decision to spare Ash in season one because it was season one. I thought sparing Lettuce was a pivotal moment for Wemmbu. I think that Flame sparing Flowtives would be a cool character moment, but I could support either decision if Flow comes back as a main villain.

Also can we talk about Flow’s decision to hand Flame’s sword back to him? I think the moment characterizes Flow as more arrogant than anything, mirroring how Flame used to approach fights. When Flow comes back to the main Mist city and finds everyone dead, his first question is “how did this happen, how did you [Flame] kill them” rather than “how am I going to kill this guy now.” We’ve only seen Flow for one episode, but he’s already being set up to be a really great character foil to Flame (and potentially Wemmbu, should Flow become a major villain). I’d love to see Flowtives go on a similar arc to Flame, where he trains himself to become less arrogant and thus be better at combat.

Great episode, 10/10. The Mist arc has really grown on me ngl.
