geomarches:
“I can shorten them: pig-headed and up themselves.” Not technically shorter, but not words you’d find in a very hard crossword, so there they were as replacements. Bighead was just his personal favorite, seeing as it could mean quite a lot when you used it. “Sweet! One last question, then. Are you a fan of Harry Potter? Because the sweetest thing I can make is Butterbeer.” He was almost tempted to tell her just how sweet that was, but on the other hand, it would be fun to see someone react to basically having an alcoholic version of two cream sodas.
Faline laughed, giving him a nod, “As amusing as those options are, I think we can stick with bigheads.” She agreed, smiling at him. At the question she lit up, nodding, “I do! It’s pretty much like..an unwritten law that every English kid has to have read the books and seen the movies. ..Pretty sure I’ve never had an alcoholic version of anything Potter-y though. So..go for it. Impress me, Barman.”
geomarches:
March nodded. “Obstinate and arrogant,” he answered. Were there probably some people working at the Red Queen that were alright? Maybe, but plenty of people could be decent and arrogant, and you could always feel it. “I’m glad you did, too! Being lost isn’t all that bad, but being found is much better.” With a grin, March shrugged. “Well, I don’t want to surprise you with anything terrible. Do you prefer sweet or citrus? I can go from there.”
“What big words.” Faline teased with a laugh, but she nodded just the same. Most people she worked with were nice and people got on well with, but there were still a couple every now and then that, well...well, bigheads. “I much prefer being found, yes.” She agreed before humming, tapping her finger on her chin for a moment, “Mmm..both actually. But for right now? Let’s say sweet.”
myhighesthonor:
“That we are.” He agreed. He was lucky to have Zephyr and Zephyr was definitely lucky to have him. At least, he thought so, anyway. He didn’t know what Zephyr thought. He was pretty young still. He didn’t want to think about the teen years when Zephyr would probably start hating him. That would be something that he couldn’t handle. He shook himself from his thoughts and looked back to Faline for a moment as she spoke about the books she was reading. “Oh yeah, I don’t do a ton of reading. I mean I just don’t have a lot of time between work and Zephyr. But I can understand not wanting to read something that someone makes a dozen of in a year.” He said. “Wuthering Heights. I’m trying to think of if I ever read that or not.” He told her, thinking for a long moment. “I don’t think you’re boring for liking classics. I think it just means you’re classic, as well.”
“Have you tried maybe audiobooks? Those are pretty great too, especially on the way to and from work. Does he liked reading? The library in the city has a pretty wonderful children’s corner if you ever wanted to try taking him there. He might really like it.” Faline offered with a soft, easy smile. She loved going by it whenever she was in the library, watching the children fondly as they played around and read. It was something she wanted to do someday with her own children. She laughed then, shrugging, “It’s quite old. From the 1800′s. One of those classic literature books that my dear old England is known for.” She teased. “My mother had a really old copy when I was a child and I loved it.” She smiled again at the words, tilting her head a bit, “That’s a nice way of thinking about it, thank you. So um..what are your other plans for the day? You and Zephyr?”
geomarches:
Grabbing a shot glass to fiddle with so he continued to look like he was working (not that anyone would really mind if he wasn’t), March nodded as she spoke. “Oh, yeah, trust me, you would have known. Red Queen’s full of bigheads who don’t know how to have fun,” he told her with a quiet laugh. “Plus you wouldn’t have been able to find me. Would you like a drink?”
Faline pressed her lips together, trying not to let her amusement get the better of her. “Bigheads, huh?” She asked with a little laugh that managed to escape. “Well, I’m glad I picked the right one then. Otherwise I guess I’d be bored and alone.” she mused, smiling up at him. “As it is though, I did you find you--or rather, you found me. So all’s well. And um...sure. What do you recommend? Or maybe just surprise me?”
geomarches:
March was occupied at first, having had to take a moment to talk to Vasilisa about…well, something. He’d pretty much already forgotten, so it had probably been about needing to order something, and it was going to get done one way or another. Crossing the floor, the man swept his hair out of his face, and just in time to see someone familiar! Grinning, March leaned in front of his coworker with a little wave of the fingers. “Speak of the devil and he’ll appear,” he greeted as he took the other barman’s space. “Hello.”
It was busier in here than she’d expected and she bit the inside of her lip, looking around again to try and see if she could maybe spot him- or anyone she knew, really. Faline wasn’t quite the type to go to clubs and such, especially on her own. But then, thankfully, a moment later a familiar voice broke through and she looked over, a bright smile pulling on her lips as she saw him. “Hi.” she breathed out, settling in the stool a bit more. “There’s more than one of these Queen places...for a second I’d hoped I hadn’t picked the wrong one.” She admitted bashfully.
@geomarches
It’d been a couple days since the random-yet-amusing encounter she’d had with March in the streets and as promised, here she was on a Friday night, walking into the White Queen. She’d traded out her usual jeans for a skirt and a nice top, borrowing a pair of Daisy’s heels to go with the outfit, and soon enough she was inside, managing to worm her way through the crowd of people, luckily spotting an empty stool at the bar. She quickly snagged it and settled in, her gaze snapping up when a bartender came over and she smiled, glancing around. “Hi, sorry, is..March here tonight?”
geomarches:
“Don’t worry, one day I’ll come up with something very good for myself, instead of for other people.” And maybe, in fact, he already had. He knew that he had a tendency to say very odd things without ever noticing, so…perhaps his best one had slipped his mind. That would be just like him. “Right, you’ll want to ask for March. Or Marchy. Either way you say it, they’ll know you mean me,” he said with a smile, ignoring the thought to add in his first name, because it was a boring one. “And who will be doing the asking, if I can ask?”
“I’m sure that’ll be quite a day- with quite a story.” She assured. He seemed to come up with such nonsensical things that it was no wonder he wanted to be a writer- she betted he’d be great at it and hoped one day she’d see a book of his in stores. “Marchy.” Her lips quirked up, smiling amusedly at what was surely a nickname, and nodded, “I’ll definitely do that. And it’ll be Faline doing the asking. Maybe I’ll come toting bars of soap and everything.”
myhighesthonor:
“Oh, I don’t know about that.” He said, with a shrug. Phoebus did his best to provide for Zephyr and by extension Esmeralda. Although, they were just friends now, their relationship in the permanent off switch. “I think I’m the lucky one to have him. He’s a well behaved kid and he tends to not get into too much trouble.” He admitted, with a smile. Phoebus tried to not let his and Esmeralda’s situation get in the way of their parenting. Just because they hadn’t been able to make it work as a couple? That didn’t mean they could work as co-parents.
He watched as she made space on the blanket and patted the empty space. He decided to take her up on her offer and he moved to sit in the empty space. He got comfortable and watched the kids playing for a few moments. “That sounds like a nice way to spend a day.” He said, with a smile. “What are you reading?” Phoebus asked, curiously. “It’s not silly at all. I think it’s great that you find places that remind you of home.”
Faline looked out to watch the little kids running around again as Phoebus spoke, a soft smile on her face, “Fair enough.” She agreed before looking back to him, “How about you’re both lucky then. Especially if he’s not a little trouble-maker.” She teased easily. She let him get settled in beside her on the blanket, still glancing to his son every now and then just to make sure they don’t run off again, and at the question she huffed out a laugh, a little pink coloring her face as she grabbed for her bag and showed a second book just thrown inside. “Well, I was trying to start reading a book a coworker told me about, but it’s one of those dull quick-read kind of books that authors churn out a dozen of in a year. So I only got about a chapter or two in before I caved and went to trusty Wuthering Heights.” She held up the worn copy, the pages a bit yellowed, the spine with multiple creases in it. “Maybe it’s the Brit in me that just can’t help but love all the old classics instead of newer things, even if people think they’re boring--and by extension, myself.”
geomarches:
March felt his smile only get wider at her little wedding story. Now that was drama that he could appreciate, though he was sad he’d missed out on seeing the execution. “That’s very good,” he complimented, trying to remember what his best little white lie had been. “Much more productive than the time I had someone convinced I was bar man for an actual queen.” That had…mostly been miscommunication, but he rarely bothered to fix those anyway. “I work at The White Queen. If you do stop by, I’ll make sure I’m the one getting your drinks.”
Faline laughed, giving a playful little bow of her head in response to the compliment, “Why thank you.” She responded, laughing still as he gave an example of one of his own little white lies. “Yeah, I think mine was a little more entertaining, sorry.” she teased, a bright grin still on her face. The White Queen- she’s heard about it, and its competitor, but she’d never been. Maybe this was the perfect excuse to. “The White Queen? I’ll keep that in mind. Maybe I can come by this weekend. I’ll be sure to ask for...?” she trailed off, tilting her head a bit as she looked up at him, realizing she’d never even gotten a name.
geomarches:
March smiled, glad to see that his idea had amused someone other than himself. For long stretches of time, his ideas could be met with odd stares or silence, so a smile was very nice to see. “A fun little white lie never hurt, especially when it’s about a job,” he told her. “Oh, no, New Hampshire is only…Well, four hours north. Very small, not too fun. And I’m not a writer for my job, that’s bar tending. Trying to write a decent book one day.”
Faline smiled, nodding along in agreement, “Oh, definitely. Especially if you’re meeting someone new and you know you’ll never see them again? It could be fun to..stretch the truth a bit. I was invited to a wedding once and I didn’t want to get odd looks by saying I made soaps. I believe I said something along the lines of being distantly related to the Queen and I was an heiress to a fortune.” she joked, shaking her head fondly at the memory as she laughed. “Very small and not too fun sounds a lot like my village. Although I bet I had more cows and horses.” A look of understanding crossed her features then and she hummed a bit, “I’m sure you’ll get there. And til then, at least bartending pays the bills?” she asked, likening it a lot to her making and selling soaps. “Where do you work? Maybe I can stop by one night.”
myhighesthonor:
Zephyr waved back at Faline for a moment before looking to Phoebus. Phoebus just smiled at him. “This is my friend, Zephyr.” He said. Zephyr didn’t seem too concerned with what the adults were talking about at the moment and more concerned with his friend and the ball they had gotten back. “You guys can play if you stay in my eyesight.” The two boys didn’t need much more encouragement than that to go off and play.
Phoebus looked to Faline with a wide smile. “I don’t mind helping out when I can.” He admitted, with a shrug. “It’s a lot of work. But, hey, I firmly believe it’s not all on one person or another to do it. It’s on all of us to do our parts.” He offered. “So what are you doing in the park?” He questioned, curiously as he looked around for a bit.
Faline grinned as the little boy waved hello to her, laughing as they both tore off moments later once given the okay to play once more. She watched with a smile as they immediately started kicking the ball back and forth, remembering fondly all the times she played like that with her friends back home as a child. As Phoebus started speaking again she blinked back up at him, the same easy smile still on her face, “That’s a sweet sentiment to have. It seems like you’re a really great father. He’s lucky to have you.” She knew horror stories of the struggles of being a single parent, and of kids not getting both of their parents. But it seemed like Zephyr had lucked out.
She watched him looking around before she shuffled a bit, making space on the blanket she’d brought with her and she patted the empty spot, offering for him to sit with her while still having a good vantage point of the kids playing close by. “I had a day off so I figured I’d actually get some reading done.” She explained, holding the book up with a smile. “I love coming here to read when I actually manage to have some free time away from work. Maybe it’s silly, but the open fields remind me of home.”
geomarches:
“Well, if you’d like to know, the first one I’ll admit to is that I wanted you to be a soap smuggler of some kind. That was the most fun.” And that was primarily because who the fuck would be smuggling soaps? It was extra ridiculous. “Oh, that’s just mothers. Mine didn’t want me moving here to be a writer, and I’m only from New Hampshire.” March was honestly sad that he wasn’t even from a fun state. If there was one.
Faline’s brows went up at that and she had to roll her lips into her mouth to keep from bursting out laughing. Still, it didn’t do much to hide the smile still tugging at the corners of her mouth. “That..that’s definitely much more intriguing. Maybe I should go with that next time someone questions me and my box of soaps.” she teased, smiling still even though it softened a bit, “Nice to know all mothers are overbearing- even across the pond. I moved here from my little village in England years ago and still she worries. Is New Hampshire far though?” she questioned, not really know much of America aside from New York- the only place she’s been since moving to the states. “And for the record? Being a writer sounds pretty wonderful. What do you write if you don’t mind my asking?”
myhighesthonor:
Phoebus was in the park with Zephyr and one his friends having a nice day. Zephyr was having a particular good day at listening. Not that he didn’t listen. But sometimes, he wanted to be with his mother, when it was his father’s time or he’d get cranky and things would just ensue. Unfortunately, the same couldn’t be said for Zephyr’s friend. They had been playing with a red ball when the ball had rolled off.
Phoebus had told his friend to stay there and he’d go get the ball. But he hadn’t listened. He’d rushed off after the ball. He’d stopped in front of the blonde woman and was about to answer her question when Phoebus appeared with Zephyr’s hand in his. “He’s with us.” He said, offering Faline a small smile. “His mother should be here to pick him up soon. I told him not to run off after the ball. But little guy has a mind of his own.” He admitted, with a shrug. He waited for the little boy to grab the ball and scurry behind Zephyr.
Faline’s worries just continued to grow as the little boy didn’t answer right away, but moments later there was a shadow over her and she looked up, a smile quickly forming on her lips as she saw who was in front of her. She laughed softly, nodding as she handed back the ball, “I was starting to get worried. Usually when there’s a kid running, there tends to be a chasing guardian not far behind.” she teased. Her eyes dropped down to his son then, her expression softening as she gave a little wave. “Hello. Zephyr right?” She greeted softly, not wanting to scare him off. “It’s nice to meet you in person.”
She looked back up to Phoebus then, the same soft smile still on her face, “It’s sweet of you to be willing to babysit both him and his friend for the day. Albeit must be a lot of work too, huh.”
geomarches:
March shrugged, smiling. “I’m not sure what I thought, I just know it wasn’t exactly the most logical answer,” he admitted. Soap hoarder had been up there with smuggler, and joined by the thought that maybe he’d cameo in My Strange Addiction, but that was just…well, him. “Well, I know how it is about mothers and jumping on creative wagons. Hopefully she comes around.” His never had, but that was because she thought his job as a bartender was a much better idea than his whole…writing thing. Well, that would be her problem when he wrote a hit play. “I feel you might have an advantage, though, mothers usually love soap.”
Faline gave the man a grin, shrugging a bit, “Maybe that’d make your answer all the more fun. Sometimes logical equates to boring.” She teased. Her smile dimmed just a bit as the topic of her mother continued and she shrugged, “Mmm..I’m not so sure. I mean sure, she likes whenever I ship her packages with a bunch of different samples, but I don’t think she would’ve been so on board with me moving to America a few years ago if she knew this was all I was really doing with the option.”
🌳 a happy text. faline
