champion of nemesis: chapter starter for kassandra reyes. probably gonna work on this the most right now. this is going to be kassandra's first meeting
a heart on a chain: another charon and alex fic that i dropped on my docs. when im done with CoN, probably gonna work on this
the air crackles with freedom: another fic that i dropped in docs. its gonna take place during take it back!, and what kassandra's mindset going into the mission. im thinking also that danse gets to play supporting character during this cause he might have partake in the fight in some way
also if you dont mind me (again) yapping cause i got stuff to say about charon under the cut (dont worry im not gonna hate rant on him LOL)
i love fallout 3 and all, but one of the biggest cons (aside from making the karma-walled the companions are) i have is how LITTLE backstory he has in f3. like its not hard writing him personality wise, but like its gonna be hard to like work through as far as his past goes. like how do you make a tall ass ghoul with red hair named charon and not give him a cool backstory?????
writing charon is gonna be a little hard going foward lol sorry if he's going to be ooc lol

[Washington D.C, Grayditch]
[A year and four days after the events of Broken Steel, 2278]
[10:00 AM]
John McDonough and Kassandra Reyes had woken up bright and early in order to get past through the rest of Grayditch. Once again, they had to deal with a few more Fire Ants along the way, but this time they were focused and got rid of them quickly.
[The Citadel]
After combing through various monsters in many forms, the two managed to track down the location that was once known formally as the Pentagon or the DC Bunker, The Citadel. There were two Brotherhood of Steel Paladins, one of them Kassandra was familiar with by the sound of their voice.
"Hello, Kassandra."
Walking past both, but greeting back, "Hey, Danse."
It seemed that it was still smooth sailing with the Brotherhood so far. If a greeting was all there is from Kassandra, then that was fine by her. Nothing more or less.
Unfortunately, someone else had other plans.
"Kassandra?"
With a big, long sigh, she turned to her side to see Paladin Star Cross, just walking in her general direction. "Hey, Cross. It's been awhile."
"Indeed it has." She turned to John. "And who might this be?"
"U-Uh, Johnathan McDonough, Ma'm. Nice to meet you." He raised his arm for a hand shake.
"It's an honor." She shook his hand. "Kassandra, since you're here: There were a couple of things the Elder needed to talk to you about."
Kassandra pinched the bridge of her nose out of frustration. "For the last fucking time, Cross, I'm not going to join the Brotherhood."
Cross, well, crossed her arms. "It is not about being in our Brotherhood, Kassandra. But you joining our ranks could mean a lot towards your father."
Ignoring her last sentence, she asked, "Then what is this about?"
"Merc works for the Brotherhood."
Sadly, Kassandra shook her head. "I'm sorry, Cross. I don't do merc jobs anymore. I'm…I'm just trying to be normal like everyone else." Even though this was true in a sense, it was just another excuse to add to the pile of excuses of why she never wanted to set foot on the Citadel.
Kassandra walked past Cross, with John following close behind her. In front of the two, there was this huge bridge called the Washington Bridge that connected the Citadel all the way to L'Enfant South. For the Brotherhood, it was another easy way to get rid of the Super Mutants at L'Enfant South. Once they were both out of Cross's line of sight, John walked side by side with Kassandra.
[Washington Bridge]
"Hey, if you don't mind me asking." John pauses for a moment, before asking, "Why don't you want to go back to the Citadel?"
Kassandra stopped in her tracks to turn and face John. Her tone was extremely sad and just a shy way of being shaky. "John. T-That's where my parents were buried in a big room next to their laboratory." Then her eyes burrowed at him. "Every single day I have to see those graves as a kid and I get a really bad panic attack-"
Tears started to appear in her eyes as she sobbed. "I-I freak out if I see people's graves. I don't know why, but I do. So you can imagine my fucking reaction, seeing my own parents graves there going in there for the first time."
In shame, she looked down and lowered her head, so she made herself appear small.
"Hey, hey." In a smoothing tone, he embraced her, feeling really bad he asked such a question. "Jesus, I'm so sorry for asking."
John had practically almost lifted her off her feet when Kassandra returned the hug, arms hung around his neck. It was almost like she was clinging to him, silently begging not to let go for a little bit.
"It's okay. I-I'm not mad."
He held her like this for as long as Kassandra wanted him to. She moved her hands from his neck to his waist, snuggling around him. If she had it her way, she would have preferred to stay like this forever. He stayed like this until she started to calm down from crying so much. She didn't let him go, but she looked up at him with a simple whisper, "Thank you."
She sank back to his chest. John would respond with a light kiss on the top of her head and say, "No, thank you."
She moved her head away again, still holding on to him, "Why are you thanking me?"
"Because you saved my life. That's why."
She scoffed rather sadly. "Anyone could have saved you."
"Sure." John shrugged his shoulders, but returned a smile her way. "But I'm glad it was you."
It was like her own mental walls finally started to break. These past couple of days they were slowly and slowly crumbling, struggling to find a way to accept kindness anyone was returning. Like if it was a strange oddity that she was afraid to touch. She was so used to surviving and not getting anything in return for so many years.
It was like she felt before when she went scavenging with him the first time. Like a missing piece she never thought she needed or wanted.
Kassandra went to wipe her tears, but John did it for her with his thumbs when he cupped her face.
Their faces got closer and closer to each other until John kissed her. His kiss was so sweet and soft that Kassandra thought she was going to cry again. They broke the kiss shortly after and pressed their foreheads together.
John wiped her tears again. "I'm sorry for bringing your parents up. I mean it. Let me know what to do to make it up to you and I'll do it."
"It's okay, John. You didn't know." Kassandra can tell John was genuinely sorry for asking. "Come on." She tugged on his hand lightly.
John sighed deeply as the two walked together, "Does Rivet City have a spot to eat?"
"Yeah." Kassandra turned to look at him. "Why?"
"Then I'll take you out to eat."
"John, no-"
John squeezed his hand around Kassandra's. "Please? I want to treat you right."
Realizing that he was determined to do this, Kassandra shook her head. "Alright, Alright. I…" She looked away, blushing. "I'll let you take me out to eat."
John was all smiles now. He went behind her to give her a big hug and lifted her up, spinning her around once. "Yes!"
Kassandra laughed when he spun her around. It was like everything that transpired earlier had never happened. She blushed even more, but with a smile she said, "Come on. Let's go already.."
"I'm going, I'm going!"
Soon enough, the two would soon reach the end of the bridge. When they did, they overheard commotion going on not too far from them. She recognised the Caravans with Brahmin holding Project Purifier's two barrels of Purifiered Water. She also recognized three Brotherhood Knights with them.
Kassandra suddenly put her arm in front of John when she recognised the group on the opposite side.
"What's up?" He quietly asked. "More Enclave?"
"No. It's not the Enclave. It's Talon Company."
Kassandra counted seven members of Talon Company and the Caravan group with Brotherhood Knights were severely outnumbered.
"Talon Company?"
"Organized mercs." Kassandra commented. "No amount of money is high enough to get the job done for them."
"Figures. Reminds me of the Gunners back home."
It was obvious to John that Kassandra wasn't going to let a bunch of mercs do what they pleased. He was on the same wavelink as her. "What's the play? We go like we did at the Super Duper Mart?"
Kassandra shook her head. "No, we both go together."
"Kassie, your shoulder-"
"I'm fine, John." Kassandra turned to him, "I'll stay right next to you."
That reassured him just a bit. A tiny bit. "If I see you at least two inches away from me, I'll tape you next to me." He made sure he was EXTRA serious when he said this.
Before Kassandra would respond, the Talon Mercs started shooting at the Caravan group. Both John and Kassandra ran towards the fire fight while Kassandra started sniping towards the Talon Mercs with Blackhawk. With a shoulder like Kassandra's, it was a bit difficult to shoot straight. But she did provide some extra fire power being right behind him.
"Shit!" A Talon Merc would yell out. "Get rid of the other-"
Kassandra shot that particular Talon Merc right through the chest, while John shot him two times for him to stay dead.
Honestly, in such a hostile situation, Kassandra was amazed on how John can multitask. Laser shots were flying everywhere and anywhere, but he's kept calm this entire time, making sure that he was helping the Caravan group, and makes sure that he's with her at all times.
She got behind John, so she'll switch from Blackhawk to her Plasma Rifle. Her hurt shoulder wasn't going to help her in terms of sniping, but she can still fight with a different gun in hand.
Very quickly, she made sure to reload her Plasma Rifle, then going back being next to him, she started shooting towards the Talon Mercs. She shot one dead while another Talon Merc was turned into a pile of goo.
Now the fight wasn't even on the Talon Merc's side. Because of this, the two Brotherhood Knights and the two Caravans were able to take the fight to the remaining four Talon Mercs. With John and Kassandra's help, the Knights were able to take care of the four Talon Mercs with ease this time. Two were reduced to ash, while the last two finally dropped dead.
"Holy moly!" A caravan said, a little shaky in his voice. "That was a close one!"
"Hey, you two! Come here!" One Brotherhood Knight waved John and Kassandra to come to their spot.
And when they did, the other Brotherhood Knight expressed his gratitude over their last minute addition to help out when they did.
"Thanks for helping out, guys. Those Talon assholes would have probably taken the Purity Water for themselves. I'm Knight Hart, by the way. Over there with the Caravan folks is Knight Austin."
Kassandra seemed frustrated at this ambush. Something isn't quite right…
"Hey, it's no problem. Glad we could help." John said.
She took this moment of peace to put away her weapons and talk about what just happened. "What I want to know is why are Talon Mercs still going after the water? Didn't Alex help you guys trash their HQ a year ago?" Kassandra asked, putting her Plasma Rifle away.
"Yeah. I've been wondering about that myself." Hart spoke. It seems that he was just confused as Kassandra was. "They're probably just as desperate as the Enclave are. Man, if it's not one thing, it's the other."
Kassandra could understand the frustration the Brotherhood were facing. They were getting attacked by all factions, including the Super Mutants that were left over roaming.
"Well, you can take comfort in the fact that both the Enclave and Talon Company are not only fighting each other, but dwindling in numbers out here."
"Oh, yeah. For sure. The smart thing to do is to let them fight each other." He gave out a big sigh. "Well, I'm not going to keep you guys. I'm sure you have better places to go." He waved at the two goodbye.
Both Kassandra and John did the same and went their separate ways with the caravan group. It didn't take them long before they would reach the L'Enfant Plaza.
[L'Enfant Plaza]
John whistled at the sight of the Louvre-esque pyramid and how big it was on the other side of the Plaza, despite being in terrible condition.
"Damn…Is this place like a plaza or something?"
Kassandra nodded. "Yeah. We're in the L'Enfant Plaza. It used to have a mall too, but like everything else it's just reduced to rubble."
Near them was a nearby resting area, with a few tables and chairs. Alongside them was one pool table. There was a concrete ramp that started from the resting area to the other side of the plaza. But it was then, when she looked off on the other side of the plaza, she spotted two Super Mutants.
"Hey."
"What's up?"
Kassandra pointed at the Super Mutants. "I'm going to trust you again with Blackhawk here." She pulled out Blackhawk from her hangbag, handing it out to John. "You think you can snipe those Super Mutants before they spot us?"
John wasn't very good with a sniper rifle or anything that requires a scope. He was more or less a close combat weapon type of person, which is why he always prefers a melee weapon or a shotgun. Kassandra was gonna have a bit of a hard time with her hurt shoulder.
But he was going to do everything to protect Kassandra.
"Sure." He would grab Blackhawk, making sure it's reloaded.
"Breath in and out so your shot can be steady."
And that's what John did. Looking through the scope, he breathed in, hit a headshot on one Super Mutant, instantly dropping dead. He breathed out.
That action seemed to draw the attention of the other Super Mutant close by. Once again, John breathed in, took another shot at the second Super Mutant on his chest, breathed out. Unfortunately, that didn't completely take him out, but John used this time to take a few more shots at the Super Mutant. With that, the Super Mutant went out at the last shot.
"Good job." Kassandra complimented.
"Thank you." John handed Blackhawk back to Kassandra.
The two set off into the concrete ramp, talking them to the other side of the plaza. From there, John had a better look of the Louvre-esque pyramid in front of him, while Kassandra looted off from the two Super Mutants.
The pyramid had seen better days. Possibly, due to the damage it sustained over the years. Multiple broken widows due to the wear and tear of the Wasteland.
John didn't look at it for too long though, because he only followed Kassandra further into the city. Through the many broken vehicles and various pieces of rubble from the buildings and shops. Clearly, this part of the city looked in even worse shape than the glass pyramid itself.
"We're going to have to keep walking. There's no other place to sleep in."
And she hated that there were no functional buildings to at least to lay down in. And when there was a house the two could sleep in, the front door would be barred from opening it for some reason. Even though there would be no one in there. Even when John looked tired, he marched on forward.
"So where are we going next?" John asked.
Opening the map to the Capital Wasteland once again, she pointed at the Jefferson Memorial. "We're going to go across for a little bit to head towards the Jefferson Memorial. That way, it'll be a short walk to Rivet City."
"Alrighty." John grabbed Kassandra's hand and forward marched ahead of her. Kassandra stopped however, and John would only look back at her in confusion. "What's the hold up?"
She grinned at him. "I'm practically giving you a free tour of the Capital Wasteland and you're already getting ahead of yourself." She pointed at her left. "It's this way."
Kassandra pulled on his hand and led him to the correct direction.
[Washington D.C, Jefferson Memorial]
[A year and five days after the events of Broken Steel, 2278]
[9:00 AM]
Eventually, the two would find a building that was more or less suitable to sleep in before they would reach the Jefferson Memorial.
A year ago, this building would be swarming with Super Mutants and the Enclave. Now, the building is not only in the Brotherhood of Steel's hands, but Alexandra Gonzalez's hands.
Wherever the hell she is nowadays.
Multiple members of the Brotherhood are seen around the Jefferson Memorial, guarding and talking around the Jefferson Memorial. Brotherhood Knights are mostly seen outside and inside, with the Scribes mostly working inside with their work, including one Scribe Bigsley. Bigsley is currently overseeing Project Purity alongside Alex and he usually works on fixing the distribution of the Aqua Pura and where it goes.
The situation with Aqua Pura had been slowly and steadily calmed down. Unlike what happened at first. People were actively trying to steal the water at first when it was first given out to settlements. But people quickly realized that fighting the Brotherhood Knights, who were the ones guarding the caravans at all times, wasn't a very good idea in the first place.
"Wow." Clearly, John was impressed by the monument.
He stood side by side with Kassandra, both of them looking on at the building in front of him. On the Jefferson Memorial's side were pipes that were spewing out fresh clean water.
"Project Purity is inside there."
John raised his brow. "What's Project Purity?"
She didn't look at him and kept staring at the monument. She responded with, "A project where fresh clean water is made."
"For real?" He asked, turning his head to her with a surprised look. "Honest to god, clean water?"
"Yeah." She nodded. "That's where the name Purity comes from. Because the water is being purified of its radiation."
She knew where John was coming from. Something like this was too good to be true. But everything she was saying was the truth. All of it.
"Is it being sold or something? Or is it free?" John asked.
"No. It's free. Just like you saw yesterday with that caravan, they send it out to different settlements every day."
Kassandra soon began to remember what had happened in the Jefferson Memorial and what the Enclave were going to do with Project Purity.
"Hey." John reached for her hand. "You thinkin' about something?"
"The Project." She squeezed John's hand. "The Enclave was going to infect the water."
He looked at her again, in disbelief. "Are you kidding me?"
"I wish I was. It was going to be infected by a Modified FEV and once people drank it, everyone who wasn't in the vault or in the Enclave were going to die."
"Because all of us are contaminated by breathing the same air as everyone else. Because it's not enough for the Super Mutants and Ghouls alike."
Kassandra nodded. "Exactly. In order to have America return to its roots, the wasteland has to be cleansed. Start a new, fresh, clean slate to return to the Pre-War ways. If it wasn't for her, we'd all be dead by now."
Slowly, bit by bit, John was starting to put pieces together about the Enclave. From his first encounter with them to this moment. "Are they like…the new government or some shit? Like…who are those people?"
"There are rumors going around that some of the members are from the Pre-War government, but I'm not too sure. Seems unlikely to me. To me, they're just another set of psychopaths who are out to ruin people's lives."
John couldn't agree with her more.
"Come on." Kassandra pulled on his hand, urging him to follow her again. "It's a short walk to Rivet City." Kassandra didn't want to stick around the Jefferson Memorial longer than she wanted to.
John followed her lead again once more. Both of them went past the various Brotherhood members on the outskirts of the Jefferson Memorial and went on the path towards Rivet City.
