Can't believe I'm back on this website

I have up to this point avoided defining what this blog is for, and have kept all my interests in one place. But, I want to post more regularly about my art, and it's not really of interest to most people who follow this main blog. (Not that I necessarily post things of interest to anyone but me, and I'm not likely to change that!)

So, my main blog @fallowhearth will continue mostly as normal: books, comics, fandom meta, auspol, general political and social commentary.

My new side blog @fallowhearth-art will now be the place I post about my art. I may also post more about fashion there, since it's something I'm very interested in, but I know many of the people who follow my main are not. I'm mainly interested in traditional mediums so that's what you can expect in terms of original work and reblogs - watercolour, ink, oil, pastels, pencil, etc.

Hopefully I will see some of you over there! To everyone else, hope to continue discussing all the regular topics with you!

I pretty much haven't posted about this web serial, since I don't think anyone I know on here is reading it, but I have been for several years and it's now in its final arc, and I have to say, Shadow Slave is so fucking good. Absolutely A+ as far as web serials go on planning and then executing an insanely long coherent plot, and for so many unexpected (but delicious in hindsight) payoffs and reveals.

If anyone decides to give it a go, I'll warn it took me a bit to warm up to it and understand what it was going for. Definitely read until the end of Sunny's first nightmare. And then if you're liking it but still not fully convinced, read until Sunny reaches the major city in the Forgotten Shore. That was where it clicked fully for me, and for the friend who recommended it.

While I'm being slightly mean about subgenres, whenever I see one of those 'grad school horror' books where the author has their advanced degrees in their bio it feels a little bit like humblebragging to me. Where are the 'grad school is hell' authors who had the courage of their convictions and dropped out

There's a recurring online tendency to aestheticize consensus itself. The imagined future village is full of emotionally compatible people who enjoy communal gardening, conflict resolution circles, acoustic folk music, mutual aid potlucks, and repairing bicycles together at sunset. Which is nice for the people who genuinely enjoy that lifestyle. But plenty of humans are solitary, prickly, obsessive, urban, nocturnal, sensory-seeking, technologically attached, contrarian, novelty-seeking, private, or just plain difficult. Those people do not evaporate after the revolution. They do not get Left Behind while you are Raptured into the Utopia. They become your neighbors.

My foster sons got adopted 😭 Their new family is so nice, and they're going to have a fantastic life. I'm really happy for them. But we are going to miss them a lot
