Make hair and clothing default replacements without wrestling SimPE.
I've always loved making default replacements, but the actual work in SimPE was... well... annoying. So I went looking for a better way to do it, and when I couldn't find one that clicked, I started building my own. 🛠️
This is very much a personal project. I'm sharing it because this community is far smarter than I am when it comes to custom content and default replacements, and I'd rather build this out in the open with your help than pretend I've got it all figured out. So please, let me know about any and all issues you run into.

Why I made this
Every time I sat down to make a default replacement, the SimPE workflow felt like more friction than the actual creative part. I wanted something that got out of the way and just let me swap the thing I wanted to swap. This tool is my attempt at that, built for myself first, shared because I figured I'm probably not the only one who feels this way.
⚠️ Read this first: it's alpha
I can't emphasize this enough: this is both a personal project and an alpha program. Please expect things to not work.
I'd happily use this for personal projects, but I'd hold off on creating default replacements you intend to share with the community. Not because the files it produces are bad, but because they may not be optimized or follow every best-practice yet. That said, each update gets better and better.
So: if you want to help improve the tool, share feedback, report bugs, and you don't mind that it's not perfect, this is absolutely for you. 💜 If you want this to be as flawless as your manual SimPE method and you can't stand the thought of hitting a single issue... it's probably best to wait, or just use SimPE for now.
What it does (and doesn't, yet)
Right now it handles hair and clothing. Most of my time and testing has gone into hair, so that's the solid part. Clothing is very much a work in progress. Expect the rough edges to be rougher on the clothing side.
How to download and use it
I try not to gate-keep anything behind a Discord (I personally hate joining a whole server for one single thing). But because this is alpha, I'm constantly pushing out new versions, and the Discord is genuinely the best way to make sure you're on the latest one no matter when you're reading this post.
It's also just easier for everyone: Tumblr is rude as hell and already shadow-banned me once for sending links in DMs, so having a place to chat and report problems directly makes life better for all of us.

A note on what I'm actually asking for
I am not a professional software engineer. I'm a Sims lover who also likes learning new things, that's it. Your help genuinely means everything here. For those of you who are far smarter than I am with default replacements, please send any and all info my way: what works, what breaks, what a "proper" file should look like. I really want to make this a solid, easy tool for default replacements, and that starts with all of us.
So don't be shy. Bugs, suggestions, corrections, best-practices I've completely missed, send them over. 💜
Just pushed a new version (Alpha 6) live that fixed a lot of small issues that some of you were running into. You can download the latest version on Discord.

Don't forget to turn on the "Sims 2 Tool Update" notifications by selecting the role in the #notifications-and-roles channel on Discord, that way you never miss another update.
And finally, a few of you have DM'd me asking if I have a Ko-Fi link. That is so sweet and generous of you. There is no obligation, I truly am doing this out of love for the game and community, but I've added a link to my profile (or click here). Thank you again! 💖

The whole reason I made the Sims 2 Essentials Setup Tool was to ... well ... play The Sims 😂 Been spending the last few weeks working on this basically CC-free custom hood. A few more builds and then I'm on to making the families.
What if all you had to do to create a default replacement was open this tool, find the item you want to replace, and upload the CC you want to replace it with and you'd have the .package file in less than 60 seconds? 😉
So far, so good, but there's going to be *so* much testing required to get it working flawlessly. If it's something you'd be interested in testing for me as I continue to build it out, let me know!
Well, I’m pretty sure I’m shadow banned and/or blocked from comments/DMs at the moment as my DMs have completely disappeared on mobile and desktop and I’m unable to reply to any of your comments 😭
I submitted an appeal with Tumblr, so we’ll see.
I promise I’m not ignoring any of you! I'm guessing this is probably because I went from never DM'ing on Tumblr to DM'ing dozens of you 😅
In the meantime, I want to make sure that anyone who wants to test the tool, can, so I've posted a link to the download, as well as instructions, in my Discord. There's also a dedicated channel for reporting any bugs, issues, etc. I don't want Tumblr's silliness to stop me from continuing to work on this project so many of you have gotten excited about!
I am very interested in testing your Default Replacement Program. As someone who wishes to make them for my medieval themed game, but struggles with the ins and outs of SimPE, this is a Godsend!
Would love to have you try it out! Shoot me a DM and I'll send you a link and some instructions! 😊
Making Sims 2 Default Replacement Hair in 60 seconds or less
Still needs a lot of refinement before I could launch it, but so far it's working, even if the UI is pretty messy and has a lot of files that could be hidden and I'm sure some part of it has a bug somewhere.
What you saw me do was:
Select the hair I wanted to replace with a CC hair.
Upload the CC hair's mesh and colors to the tool.
The tool gave me a .package default replacement file I added to my game.
In less than 60 seconds I went from uploading files to seeing my default replacement in game (... okay, maybe a bit more than 60 seconds, but that's because Sims 2 needs to open)
If you want to help me test it out, please let me know! I'd love to clean it up and get it polished to the point where I could share it with everyone.
I'm sending out links to download for those who said they'd like to test buuuuuuut, I think Tumblr thinks I'm spamming so it's blocking me from sending messages 😂
I'll try again in a few hours once my message limits reset (or whatever it is that is blocking me from sending DMs), but you're also more than welcome to shoot me a DM in the meantime.
PS: If you want to be a tester, please make sure that your DMs are open so I can send you the link!

Seeing how many of you really loved the Sims 2 Essentials Setup Tool it has motivated me to poke around with some other ideas I have ... no promises but 🪄
Community Time makes The Sims 2 feel more alive: time keeps passing on your home lot while your Sims are out at a community lot, so when you return they aren't magically back home yet - they arrive after the time they spent away.
While looking at how I could add the Community Time Project Mod to my Sims 2 Essentials Setup tool in the future, I wanted to avoid multiple files if said files were able to be combined.
This file combines Chris Hatch's standalone version of the mod with @blueybre's critical fix, baked into a single package for easier installation.
Every original resource is preserved; the fix's two corrected BHAVs and its global constant are applied on top.
None of this is mine - it's a long-standing, community-maintained mod. All credit goes to the people below.

Credits and more info below the cut 👇
Credits
crammyboy @ MATY - the original Community Time mod
Chris Hatch - the updated, more stable standalone version
@blueybre - the fix
familyfunds (me!) - for… well… nothing, really. Just combining the fix with the original mod so it installs as one file.
About @blueybre's Fix
You can read about their fix in their own words on their Tumblr post (here!), but their fix targets two things:
If the player ever closes the text box that shows the remaining time until the Sim's return, or if the player closes their game while a Sim is off-world and later reloads the lot, then the mod will throw an "Undefined Transition" error.
CTP also fails to calculate the time correctly if a Sim is away for longer than 72 hours, and instead flows over to zero.
They also solved the conflict between CTP and @lazyduchess' Playable Nannies mod.
Load Order Note (for this combined file)
Because the fix is already baked into this single package, the "load the fix after CJH_CommTime" step is handled automatically. The one thing that still applies: if you use LazyDuchess's Playable Nannies (or otherwise have ld_scheduler_car_semiglobals), make sure this combined file loads AFTER it.
I've tested the combined version of this mod and haven't had any issues with any of the other mods that come with my Sims 2 Essentials Setup Tool, but if you run into any issues, please let me know!
One installer. Every essential fix, mod, and tool for The Sims 2, set up for you in a few clicks.
I got tired of hunting down the same "must-have" fixes every time I reinstalled The Sims 2 (to the point where it has kept me from playing), so I made a tool that does it for you! 🥳 You choose the fixes, mods, and tools you want, click through, and it installs them all — with automatic backups and a built-in undo, so nothing is permanent and nothing gets lost.
It works with both the 2025 Legacy Collection (Steam and EA App) and the older Ultimate Collection.
⚠️ One heads-up: I only own Legacy (on Steam) and the Ultimate Collection, so I haven't been able to test the EA App or Epic versions of the Legacy Collection myself. They should work, but if you run into any issues on those, please let me know and I'll push out a fix!
Most importantly, none of this content is mine. Every fix, mod, and tool belongs to the creators who made them — I only automate installing them. Full credits and links are in the guide that comes with it. Please go support these people 💜

What is it?
The Sims 2 Essentials Setup Tool is a single Windows installer (.exe file). Instead of downloading, unzipping, and hand-placing dozens of separate fixes, you run one program, choose what you want from a checklist, and it puts everything in the right place for you.
There are three quick presets so you don't have to think too hard:
Recommended — the sensible default set.
Complete — everything.
Custom — start from a blank slate and pick only what you want.
What's included
Everything here is curated to work together and this isn't a random pile of downloads. I checked every package against the others for conflicts (comparing the actual game resources each one touches), dropped or swapped anything that clashed, and set the load order in the few cases where two mods needed to coexist. So you can tick things freely without worrying that two fixes will quietly fight each other.
Over 140 hand-picked fixes and mods, grouped into:
Anti-corruption & core — the safety-critical stuff that keeps your neighborhoods healthy.
Bug fixes — dozens of fixes for Maxis bugs, from memory issues to gameplay glitches.
Helpful gameplay mods — quality-of-life tweaks that just make the game nicer to play.
Essential tools & systems:
CEP (Color Enable Package) — downloaded straight from MTS at install, see the note below
The Scriptorium
Radiance Lighting System 2.5
GunMod's Camera Mod 3.1
Rugs off-grid
TS2 Extender 0.8.1 (fixes only, optional extras off by default)
Objects.package corruption protection
Missing content restore (you supply your own Ultimate Collection or disc files — EA content is NOT bundled):
Restore IKEA Home Stuff (works on both Steam and EA/Epic — it sets up whichever your game needs)
Restore Missing Music
Missing Holiday Items
Neighborhood setup: clean/empty stealth 'hoods, or fully disable them, plus the MATY no-townie-regen mods.
Startup cheats: 45° object rotation and quarter-tile placement.
Third-party tools: SimPE, Mootilda's HoodChecker / LotAdjuster / Sims2Pack Clean Installer, and Body Shop for the Legacy Collection.
Backups & undo
This is the part I care about most: before the tool changes or replaces any file, it backs up your original first (to C:\ProgramData\The Sims 2 Essentials Setup Tool\backups). To undo anything, just run the tool again and choose Undo — you get a checklist and can roll back everything or only certain pieces. It does not add itself to "Add or remove programs"; it stays fully self-contained.
Requirements
Windows (I tested and created this on Windows 11)
The Sims 2 Legacy Collection (2025) or Ultimate Collection
For the "Missing" content (IKEA / Music / Holiday), your own UC or disc files
How to use it
First, a friendly nudge: back up your Sims 2 "Documents" folder. The tool shouldn't touch your saves, neighborhoods, or downloads — and it automatically backs up anything it does change — but it's always better safe than sorry. Just copy your Documents\EA Games\The Sims 2… folder somewhere safe before you start. (Besides… when was the last time you backed up your saves? 😉)
Download the .exe. It's unsigned (normal for community tools), so if Windows SmartScreen pops up, click More info → Run anyway.
Right-click the .exe and choose "Run as administrator" — it needs admin rights because it writes into your game folder.
Pick your edition, confirm your Documents folder, tick what you want, and click through.
That's it. To undo later, run it again and choose Undo.
A note on CEP
CEP isn't bundled in the installer — Numenor asks that it only be hosted on Mod The Sims. So if you tick it, the tool downloads it directly from MTS at install time. None of Numenor's files are redistributed here. That does mean CEP is the one thing you can't install while offline — but everything else in the tool works completely fine with no internet connection.
Credits & terms
Genuinely, all of the credit goes to the creators — Numenor, LazyDuchess, GunMod & the Radiance team, HugeLunatic, Mootilda, cyjon, Pescado & MATY, TwoJeffs, Nopke, simler90, LordDarcy, MidgeTheTree, hiloyt, CroconawSims, and so many more. The full list with links is in the included guide.
While I've reviewed everyone's terms of use in detail to make sure I wasn't breaking any rules, I'm only human and I could have missed (or misinterpreted) something. If one of your mods or tools is included in this installer and you'd like me to remove it, please shoot me a message and I'm happy to do so.
The tool itself is free and open-source — you're more than welcome to review every file and exactly what it does on GitHub. It's not affiliated with EA or with any of the creators above.
Missing something? Suggestions welcome
Think I've left out a crucial bug fix or a genuinely helpful mod? Send it my way. If the creator's terms of use allow it, I'm happy to look into adding it.
A quick heads-up on my philosophy, though: I originally built this for myself, and I like my game as close to vanilla as possible. So mods that change gameplay in a big way, or add features that were never in the base game to begin with, generally aren't ones I'll bundle. This isn't meant to be an "everything" list, but I'm always glad to consider suggestions, so don't be shy about sharing what you'd love to see!
I'm working on this and I'm adding the mods from creators that have an open TOU to make sure that all of the major bug fixes are covered. I think I have a pretty comprehensive list (thanks to this resource), but anything I'm missing? 🤔
Anti-Corruption & Core
No Corrupted Death Memory - Pescado/MATY
nocorruptdeath.package - prevents death-memory corruption.
No Unlink On Delete - Pescado/MATY
nounlinkondelete.package - prevents deleting in-use sims from corrupting the hood.
No Auto Urn Cleanup - cyjon
CJ-NoAutoUrnCleanup.package - stops auto-deletion of urns/graves. [needs SmarterEPCheck]
Bug Fixes
Aging Baby→Toddler Fix - simler90
AgingBabytoToddlerFix.package - babies age to toddler properly.
Aging Birthday Party Fix - simler90
AgingBirthdayPartyFix.package - allows evening birthday parties without forced age-up.
Well, I think I'm pretty much done with the tool! I'm doing some final testing today and tomorrow and then I should be able to get this up and posted before the weekend (just in time to rot on Sims 2 for hours).
That said, I'd love for anyone who has the Legacy Collection on EA who wants to give the installer a try to let me know! I've made it compatible with Ultimate Collection, Legacy Collection (Steam and EA/Epic), but I don't have it on EA to actually do testing.
If you're interested, shoot me a DM!
I also added a few more mods and fixes to the installer. Here's the list so far - anything else I'm missing? Some of y'all have pointed out some great suggestions!
For right now I'm using the Knowledge Aspiration icon as the icon because ... well ... it felt fitting, but if anyone who's far more artistic/creative than me wants to come up with an icon, I'd be forever grateful 😅
Essential Mods
The Scriptorium v2.2f - Numenor
Lets you add custom stairs, fences, arches and objects to the game's catalog. Installed as text edits + folders (no files of Numenor's are redistributed).
CEP - Color Enable Package v9.2.0 - Numenor
Enables recolors/design-tool options on objects that Maxis left un-recolorable. Essential for custom content.
Rugs - zMOG!! Off Grid!! - HugeLunatic
Lets you place rugs off the grid for finer decorating.
GunMod's Camera Mod 3.1 - GunMod
Smoother, more precise camera control, closer zoom, and a free/story-telling camera.
Radiance Lighting System 2.5 - GunMod, Chocolate Pi, Chesspieceface, dDefinder & Dreadpirate
Overhauls the game's lighting - removes flat blue nights and greatly improves indoor/outdoor light.
Corruption protection (Objects.package read-only) - long-standing community practice
Sets each pack's shared Objects.package read-only so an accidental write can't corrupt every neighborhood. Cheap insurance.
TS2 Extender - LazyDuchess
Code-level fixes: pink-soup/pink-flashing on 64-bit (discovered by spockthewok), Firstborn/RNG, Open-For-Business uniform faces, plus always-on date-stood-up / aging-timing / wall-cutaway fixes. Optional extras (no-intro, Lua, separates) are off by default.
Missing Files
These need your own game files (disc or Ultimate Collection) - EA's content isn't bundled, for licensing reasons.
Missing Holiday Items - hiloyt & sunrader
Restores ~50 holiday CAS items missing from Legacy.
Restore IKEA Home Stuff - hiloyt
Re-adds the IKEA Home Stuff pack that Legacy dropped for licensing. Needs your own UC/disc files.
Restore Missing Music - hiloyt
Restores radio tracks cut from Legacy for licensing. Needs your own UC/disc files.
Empty Neighborhood Setup
Clean and Empty Stealth Neighborhoods - long-standing community method
Replaces the hidden stealth sub-hoods (and Pleasantview/N001) with empty versions so new custom hoods don't come pre-populated.
Disable Stealth Neighborhoods - method by meetme2theriver
Alternative to the empty templates: fully disables the Pets, Seasons and Bon Voyage stealth 'hoods so they never attach to new neighborhoods at all (the only way to later convert a hood into a shareable subhood template). FreeTime, Apartment Life and Pleasantview stay as empty templates so their secret hobby/witch lots still work. Pick this or the clean option, not both.
Empty Neighborhood Mods (notownieregen, nostrayrespawn, nodormieregen, antiredundancy) - MATY / Pescado
Stop the game auto-generating random townies, strays, dormies and unnecessary NPCs - full control over who's in your hood.
Third-Party Sims 2 Tools
SimPE - Ambertation (Quaxi) & contributors (GPL)
The essential package editor for creating and fixing custom content and mods.
HoodChecker - Mootilda
Scans neighborhoods for corruption and invalid references.
LotAdjuster - Mootilda
Resize and adjust lots.
Sims2Pack Clean Installer - Mootilda
Safely install .Sims2Pack files (Legacy has no built-in installer for them).
Body Shop Installer for Legacy Collection - CroconawSims
Adds Body Shop (and optionally Homecrafter Plus) to Legacy - runs its own installer. Body Shop & Homecrafter are Maxis programs.
Startup Cheats
45 degree angle rotation cheat
Adds boolProp allow45DegreeAngleOfRotation true to your userStartup.cheat so you can rotate objects to 45-degree angles.
Quarter-tile object placement cheat
Adds boolProp quartertileplacementenabled true to your userStartup.cheat so you can place objects at quarter-tile increments for finer decorating.
Bug Fixes and Other Mods
All of these install to Documents\EA Games\The Sims 2 Legacy\Downloads\Mods\. Any cyjon mod auto-adds SmarterEPCheck.
Anti-Corruption & Core
No Corrupted Death Memory - Pescado/MATY
nocorruptdeath.package - prevents death-memory corruption.
No Unlink On Delete - Pescado/MATY
nounlinkondelete.package - prevents deleting in-use sims from corrupting the hood.

How this installer works
The short version: you tick what you want, and the tool does it all in one go - copying mods into your game's Downloads\Mods folder, and (for things like CEP, Radiance or the stealth 'hoods) editing or replacing files inside your game folder. CEP itself isn't bundled - if you tick it, the tool downloads it from Mod The Sims at install time.
Your originals are always backed up first. Before the tool changes or replaces any file, it copies the untouched original to:
So if you ever need an original file back for any reason, it's sitting right there. (That ProgramData folder is hidden by default in Windows - paste the path into the File Explorer address bar to get to it.)
The tool does not add itself to Windows "Add or remove programs" - it stays fully self-contained. To undo, just run the same tool again and choose Undo: it shows a checklist of everything you've installed, so you can roll back everything or just certain pieces, and your originals are restored from that backup folder.
Terms of use & credits
Everything bundled here belongs to its original creator - this tool only automates installing it. Before including anything, I read each creator's terms of use, and everything in this tool is shared under fairly open terms (free use, "credit and link back," or an open-source licence). Creators and links are listed throughout this guide - please follow their terms and support them.
One exception: CEP (Color Enable Package) by Numenor. Its terms allow it to be hosted only on Mod The Sims, so CEP is not included in this installer. Instead, when you tick it, the tool downloads it directly from Mod The Sims at install time - none of Numenor's files are redistributed here.
