@fanblubbering
I think the most unrealistic thing about Zootopia is they’re in a giant bustling city and there’s not a single piece of litter lying around anywhere
Suppose there is a space for birds to live in the next zootopia movie. HOW WAS THE NAME AND STRUCTURE OF THIS REGION?
Ah, I will of course plug my original spiel on the subject of birds in the Zootopia franchise.
The short answer would be “The Aviary” and the defining feature being some form of tall, ornate, barrier that surrounds it. While this is obviously an allusion to bird cages in reality, in Zootopia it actually serves a very practical purpose. It enforces a no-fly zone into the bird district.
Avians would obviously take their ability to fly as a central part of their identity and culture. But in world with aircraft, complications may arise in having birds roam freely. But they can do away with such concerns or restrictions within their own district.
Longer answer is: when it comes to true layout of the district, the problem is that birds do not belong one particular type of biome which is ultimately what most of the districts are based on (minding the pseudo-district where rodents congregate). Birds don’t need a district.
They need a city.
Zootopia? More like Mammaltopia amiright? Truly what birds would mean is integrating an entire branch of the animal kingdom that stands toe-to-toe with the whole of Zootopia as is. If Zootopia sticks to its guns in terms of character design, then the key aspect to remember when designing a city for sentient birds is that wings are not hands. Perhaps you can push to where they might have simple grasping capability but they do not possess the finesse of fingers which only their feet will have. Do not expect many doors in public spaces, such tasks become cumbersome.
Public transportation (and vehicular transportation in general) is minimal and mostly utilized by flightless birds as multi layered flight paths are used for personal travel. But all this under the auspice that different birds have very difference needs. Toucans are not penguins. So I would caution away from the treehouse-treehouse-treehouse way of thinking. Though, as interesting as Zootopia’s architecture already is, giving in fully to an entangling, interconnected tree shaped sky scrapers (as opposed to actual trees like the Rainforest district) is still a design element to consider for a downtown.
If anything, Zootopia floundering to build a bird city is good fodder for bulking out a potential Zootopia story when speaking on the subject of birds as a whole. The subject matter is certainly topical.
Sometimes I see bad Zootopia takes like this one getting traction and it makes me desperately wish I’d called this blog “Beastars and also Zootopia takes”
Though maybe there is some meat to dig into about why Beastars is not “dark Zootopia,” nor is it “how Zootopia should have been.”
What do y’all think? Space for occasional Zootopia content here? It’s my first love and I could talk about it forever.
Things tend to orbit each other, so of course other topics will come up.
Especially whn directly relating to beastars.
If Zootopia 2 ever have Birds and reptiles and make the film about Immigration, or segregation, how would it be executed???
Well the crux of it is whether it’s a topical moralityparable or is it going to have depth and substance? Is the intent to tell aninteresting and challenging story or placate an audience? You can guess theeasy way, forget subtlety and pay lip service to popular politics. Sympathetic
immigrants who’ve done nothing wrong are treated with suspicion by the
Zootopians who are for some strange reason racist again. We have another false
flag conspiracy plot that gets foiled, everyone learns to get over their
xenophobia and sings kumbaya at the end. Oh and uh...an annoying gerbil that
looks like Donald Trump. Everybody claps, box office approves. Now if Disney
would allow a project with some actual substance. Hm…
For this we must remember the innate subtlety and political
complexity of the first film. As
I’ve spoken of before, It’s very
easy to miss-categorize
Zootopia as being an allegory for any one group or issue. So, this
question as several angles to go by.
Firstly, we have to ask ourselves if there are any legitimate
differences between avians, mammals, and reptiles (as
discussed before). One of Zootopia’s greatest narrative accomplishments is
that it doesn’t skirt on the issue of humanization. (Bunnies are bunny sized.
Elephants are elephant sized etc.) The only problem, if one is to have direct political
parallels, is that this creates legitimate issues. It was (and still is) literally
in the biology of predators to eat other animals. That’s…in no way comparable
with any problem faced between groups of humans in any categorization.
Likewise, is there a good reason why integration with other
groups hasn’t happened until this point? While perhaps not favorable to the topical
subject matter, one would hope so for the sake of internal story integrity. Think,
if you will, of the dolphins in our world (save aquatic mammals in Zootopia for
later), many people believe them intelligent enough to qualify for personhood.
This is to say they have graduated to sapience from mere sentience (the two
words are popularly misunderstood to mean the same). However, being so
different in nature to ourselves, few would truly consider introducing Earth to
aliens as the planet of Humanity & Dolphins.
If Zootopia sticks to its guns, then birds won’t have hands.
Perhaps the reptiles have “lizard brains”, do not possess the complete
emotional spectrum we would consider vital for social stability (IE: they’re
all socio-paths). If Zootopia comes at it with thought of “Our differences are
only skin deep” then its doing itself a disservice.
That being said, it wouldn’t be out of line for some people (*cough*
Judy *cough*) to think that way. To assume that because a sheep and a wolf
learned to get along, clearly all obstacles are illusory. If the first movie
was about overcoming prejudices, what if the second movie challenged itself and
asked not “if differences are irreconcilable” but “when do differences matter?”.
I doubt that will happen of course, but its food for thought.
Brainstorming:
Remember that Zootopia is an experimental city in its own
universe, there is no other place like it. We may in such a way consider the
presence of Avians and Reptiles to be the first step to greater social change.
That this was a long-planned endeavor in the experiment that is Zootopia. Akin
to the first days when predator and prey first willingly came together and/or
Zootopia’s founding days.
Alternatively, you could imagine a scenario in which a
disaster forces groups that were otherwise reluctant to integrate to do so.
There is an environmental catastrophe and now lizards/birds find the city of
Zootopia to be a favored option among a list of bad options.
What if the Avians and Reptiles don’t get along. Few would
say they do in nature, and now the mammals find themselves playing referee
between two hostile forces. Indeed, what if both these new factions’ true
intentions from the start is to actually turn the mammals to their side in a brooding
war? Perhaps it is actually the above mentioned race war which has caused two
factions of refugees to seek shelter in neutral ground.
Thusly the pro-segregation crowd is actually the immigrants
themselves. They don’t consider themselves Zootopians, they don’t want to be
Zootopians, they don’t like what Zootopia stands for. How can our heroes be heroic
when the corrupting forces are the very people they thought they’d be
protecting?
They have an impossible choice: destroy all the progress
Zootopia has made for the sake of trying to make two hostile factions fit into
that dream OR expel the malefactors, seemingly proving their own philosophy of
universal cooperation flawed.
You could, of course, have the learn-to-get-along ending
where the sides ultimately reconcile. But I would personally favor the majority
of each faction being resolute in their beliefs, and we have a bitter sweet ending
of only a few true believers from the Avians and Reptiles sticking around to forge
a new path at a very, -very- slow pace.

The link under the following cut will lead you to a file hosting website where you can download Zistopia Finale- The Rough Cut.pdf
This file is a compilation of scraps, scripts, and notes that would have shaped the ending of the Zistopia AU fan comic.
It includes some suggestions and commentary by @humanityinahandbag, who was kind enough to look certain parts over for me while I revised it in 2017, at a point when I had hoped to try starting it back up.
It’s been several years since we had to go on hiatus. I can not kid myself anymore about ever going back to finishing it. I have responsibilities and a life that the internet is not entitled to interfering with.
I know that any choice to hand this project off to someone else is just going lead to more stress on my part, and I know that ending this here and now is the only option that will give me peace of mind. So I wanted to say a few things before that.
What I have below is the bare skeleton of an ending, that is soon to belong to everyone to reads it.
If you already wrote yourself an ending in your head, then reading this version of the ending might upset you. That version can belong only to you, much like this version of the story can belong only to me.
If you desire to put flesh on the skeleton I’ve provided, do this as the purest vision of your own. Don’t make it a project. Don’t market it as “THE LOST ENDING OF ZISTOPIA” or some sensational opportunistic bullshit. Especially if you’re desiring to socially capitalize off of it through the fandom. Nobody’s version of this is better than anyone else’s. If anyone claims I authorized their project, they are lying, and if they try to dominate the reinterpretation of this narrative, they can get fucked.
If you are a solo artist who wants to use an excerpt of the dialogue and situations provided here to practice your storytelling, you have my blessing.
This is the last time I log into this account. If you want to continue following my work, you can follow me at @artwitt. I deleted my main blog.
