This was, of course, originally planned to be done in October, after bawling my eyes when watching Guillermo Del Toro's Frankenstein... and noticing the parallel in themes between each other. But life happened, and I decided to share it now because I found it fitting as my last art (and reflection) for 2025.
I LOVE the phrase Memento Mori, but I never checked if it had another part that complements it!
Because OBVIOUSLY Del Toro's Pinocchio is Memento Mori, what with a protagonist that defies death and, for that reason, needs to learn to value it, and make his loved ones learn that lesson too to free them of dreading death.
Now, Frankenstein is the other side of the coin: he, too, is a fabricated being, starts innocent and excited to partake in life, until he experiences pain firsthand through his creator, and so many events follow.
To the point it even makes him see death as a very tempting goal to achieve... and then is when Memento Vivere takes place: before we reach death, we will endure pain. Pain IS the price to pay for living, for carrying this body that it doesn't hurt us because we are bad, but because we are fragile!
Our body reminds us of our finite existence, and acts as an alarm to be careful. Yes, you can enjoy this meal, it's tasty! But too much of it can intoxicate us. Yes, climbing that mountain makes us feel powerful! But let's not overexert to reach the top, or we won't enjoy it when we arrive there, etc.
It can be annoying, but that's how it is! And just because something is painful, doesn't mean we are about to die. Actually, if your body is registering it, it's because you are alive. Take good care of your only, unique vessel. Sit with it, feel it, talk with a professional if necessary!
And if pain can be felt... a hug too. A kiss. A hand holding yours. The warmth of the sun.
Aren't those worth feeling, even if there's a bit of pain in the middle?
I think so. And I hope you too.
Please: keep living, through the pain, clinging to the love (or anything that aids you to keep motivated).

I find it really touching that in Guillermo del Toro's "Pinocchio," when our titular character finally becomes a "real boy," his body does not change at all. He doesn't turn into a perfect stereotypical human boy. He stays a puppet, only now mortal.
The message that to be something, to be "real", means simply to be alive is so, so beautiful. I can't get over that
jon is such a weird ass motherfucker it drives me insane. he thinks the best way to deal with mosquitoes is their complete extermination. he openly insults martin multiple times on official academic recordings. he still eats meat in spite of the flesh statements and actively mentions that. he puts a little bit more drama into the statements on his own instead of it all just being the eye. he hates americans. he lied about his age by a full decade. he has early grey hairs. he yapped about emulsifiers on martin’s birthday and completely fucking forgot about it. god he’s such a fucking shitbag no wonder he wasn’t properly loved as a child
Martin TheMagnusArchives Blackwood can teach you the beautiful lesson that you can spend your entire life arduously molding yourself to be the most pleasant and tolerable person possible in order to evade the cruelty of others and someone will still decide to hate you for no reason. This sounds demoralizing but it’s actually just a great reason to stop letting the people who like you the least shape your actions and instead start being a bitch unapologetically. I mean living for yourself. Because the people who are meant for you will like you the most when you’re the most authentically you, not when you’re the least difficult. Ideally your personal journey in this area does not involve man eating worms but we take what life gives us I guess.
