food ? the siren’s interest was immediately piqued. you can tell by the way his brows lifted, mouth opened, and posture straightened. the pearl in his hand was rolled between his fingers as the menu was sat down before him. could he really afford to be dining with someone who was after his kin? his kind had a very strict policy about getting too friendly with the enemy. after all, if they weren’t working with them, they were working against them. such has always been their code. “ well, I mean … I guess it couldn’t hurt. “ he hands the tiny red gem to the other and immediately begins flipping through the menu. he hopes the other is ready. “ what’s the budget? “ if all else fails he could just charm the manager and they would eat free.
hook, line, and sinker - it pays to know weaknesses of others, pays to know what will get him information, though eli will be the one paying ( a potentially hefty price ) if his knowledge of sirens and food don’t fail him. he slides one of the menus closer in order to peruse it, sees the menu just a bit out of his comfort range, knows he’ll go back to his apartment with thinner pockets unless he manages to find the rowdy siren he’s been hired to look for. but it doesn’t matter, because the siren across from him will start talking with food, and whatever he says will help him get one step closer to finishing this case.
he flips the menu closed and slides it back towards the center of the table, deciding to fill empty stomach with complementary bread and water, as seafood isn’t his go to choice. he takes the red pearl and safely deposits it in inner pocket before the ‘wolf settles back into the chair with a mindless hum of a response, head canting to regard the other, “try not to bankrupt me.” as if it’s difficult to do such a thing, living case to case as he does. “order what you want,” a breezy response, one he knows might bite him in the ass but if it gives him information, then he’ll take the risk.

emerald hues flick down to the pearl and studies it for a few seconds longer, twisting the tiny circle between his digits before finally handing it back to the other. “ sorry sir, but you’re asking for information that isn’t free and could possibly end up with one of my kind in a nasty situation. I’m no tattle-tale. “ or at least that’s what he says. “ however ! “ he suddenly exclaimed rather loudly, drawing a few eyes. “ what I can tell you is that this is amateur work. whatever siren did this is very young and whatever trouble they caused, it was probably a little prank. “ suddenly his eyes turned earnest. careful, he’s working his magic …
dark gaze drops to the pearl still in the siren’s hand, before lifting when refusal to admit to this pearl’s original location ; of course loyalty is a factor, which means this siren is may be more helpful than originally thought ( yet that is for later, if eli is truly desperate ). “i understand that, but lemme buy you something before i go, as thanks.” everyone has a price, be it monetary or not, and eli knows this kid’s price is not a stack of bills but a hefty meal, which is precisely why he chose a seafood restaurant.
gaze snaps about when the other’s voice rises suddenly, eyebrows furrowing before attention returns to the other, head bobbing in a quick, dismissive nod. “prank or no, i still have to find ‘em.” otherwise he doesn’t get paid, and his pockets aren’t as heavy as he likes them to be. a brief flash of amusement colors features, the ‘wolf nodding down at the menus sat between them, “order something, kid.”

lips twist at the edges into a frown ; gut feeling had been right when he had come across this oddity in his search, and it’s only an upset that the other confirms suspicions. arms cross before chest and sigh rests on tongue. “any idea of where in the ocean it could’ve been farmed ?” he needs to narrow his search, as the coast is large and the ocean’s depths larger.

. roman doesn’t dignify that with a verbal response, flipping a quick bird at his wolfy friend and jabbing a finger hard into one of those muscles. it’s harder than he expects and his finger throbs, but he suppresses his grimace. they’re both acting in good spirits despite the rough state eli’s in, but considering…it’s not the worst he’s seen him. it’s been a good shift this time.
this time the human snorts and sideeyes eli as he pushes his glasses back up his nose. ❝ don’t get used to it, batman. ❞ he wasn’t going to be the alfred of this story. or the robin, either. ❝ let’s get you back to the batcave, dark knight. ❞ too many batman references? there’s no such thing. roman pats eli on the back of the shoulder, hand lingering there in the guise of brotherly companionship but it’s there to steady him, too. the exhaustion’s clear in eli’s body and if the wolf falls, there’s no way he’s getting him back on his feet.
the raised digit is responded to with a matching one of his own, middle finger raised happily. the digit digging unpleasantly against side, however, is received with a pointed glance down at the offending digit ; it registers as a faint prod and nothing more, and the ‘wolf can’t help but exhale a faint noise, as if roman’s finger had done extensive damage and isn’t just a mere nuisance.
eli is lost in the cloth of the shirt he’s attempting to tug over head, blissfully deaf to the comparison ( or as deaf as can be, with enhanced physiology ) to the caped crusader, though he is not as blissfully ignorant of the second comment. a head of mussed hair pops free from shirt only to level narrowed gaze upon friend. “are you done yet ??” despite short words, the way shoulders loosen beneath the steady presence of the other’s hand is enough of a tell that the ‘wolf is grateful, for the clothes now covering scarred body and for the mere fact he doesn’t have to make the trek back home alone.

“comes with the territory -- ” he’s relieved to see the bump to her head wasn’t too bad albeit the sharp scent of copper permeating the air and the crimson staining her hair, though the relief was short-lived in the first place, as eli wasn’t too happy to see her on the floor of some old warehouse. gaze lifted to scan their surroundings, ears perked for any noises signaling they were no longer alone. “i’m guessing you didn’t see who or what got the drop on you, did ya ?”

“come with on a coffee run.” tired hands drag over exhausted features, mussing up wild locks in the process ; eli’s hit a dent in his current case, and he needs caffeine to kick-start his brain. well, more accurately, the ‘wolf slammed into a mental wall sometime at around three am, and he hasn’t moved from his desk where his laptop has long since gone to sleep and the last dregs of his usual glass of whiskey are beginning to stain the bottom, as he should have done.

“i’m up to my eyeballs in cases right now so, no, i’m not gonna go out and watch you get shitfaced.” though getting shitfaced doesn’t sound like a bad idea to the ‘wolf, he knows better than to indulge before he’s done with the growing pile of cases sat upon his kitchen table. "come bug me in november." he really hates halloween.

“i don’t recommend gettin’ that flavor.” a nod down towards the glass bottle in hand, a casual tone coloring voice. “tastes like ass rather than the advertised cinnamon.” either that, or the ‘wolf isn’t a fan of cinnamon.
